Stigma failed Kurt Cobain nearly 30 years ago and continues to fail ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Kurt Cobain was the world's biggest rock star. His path through addiction treatment was devastatingly common.

Because, as Love later said of the hardline approach to treating her husband: “It doesn’t work. In truth, these medications remove cravings and the harms associated with addiction. Cobain wrote in his journal: “I was introduced to buprenorphine, which I found alleviates the [stomach] pain within minutes ... It acts as an opiate, but it doesn’t get you high.” Ten days before Cobain died, his wife and nine of his friends staged an intervention in his Seattle house. Later she told Rolling Stone reporter Michael Azerrad that Cobain was vomiting and fainting in the room as his daughter came into the world. A few days later, Cobain entered abstinence-based treatment for the final time. According to the American Psychological Association, upwards of 90% of people relapse following abstinence-based detoxification. Cobain used heroin for the first time in 1987 — recreationally, as he used many other drugs. But Cobain stopped taking it in the U.S. and resumed using heroin. So Cobain was on his own. But there are parts of the rock legend’s story that are common among many people struggling with addiction: childhood trauma, housing instability, and chronic physical pain. During a 1992 tour, when Cobain couldn’t get heroin abroad, his stomach started bothering him again.

- Verse Chorus Verse The debut of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” came as the set closer, after some setlist swapping, for Nirvana’s April 17, 1991 concert at the O.K. Hotel. But the song would still become an anti-establishment anthem while ironically putting Nirvana right in the commercial sights of the establishment. It had been Sub Pop label head Bruce Pavitt, however, who suggested producer Butch Vig as they began to map out Nevermind. The band headed to Vig’s Madison, Wisconsin studio in April 1990 to begin recording. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the lead single and opening track on Nirvana’s landmark 1991 album Nevermind. The song began making radio rotation in late summer 1991 and became available as a single on September 10 ahead of the LP’s release on September 24. Kurt Cobain died tragically on this date in 1994.
