Augusta resident Luke List has the shortest commute of any player in the field, but it took a while to get back to the Masters.
Every year it was upsetting to me to not be there because I felt like I was missing out on the chance to be competitive in the Masters, and I truly believe I will play well there. That’s been frustrating to me because I think I have all the tools to do well there.' I want to treat it as much as possible as a normal tournament week, but it’s also a pretty cool moment for me and my family and friends, and we want to enjoy that experience together, so there is a balance there.” A lot of golf is attitude, and my attitude was always that I could find a way. We moved to a new house, and it’s kind of hard to not drive past it to get to the places I need to go. Before that there was his lone appearance in 2005 when he qualified after finishing runner-up to Ryan Moore in the 2004 U. S. Amateur at Winged Foot. List stayed in the Crow’s Nest in the clubhouse that week, the traditional lodging for amateurs. Next week, he’ll be just as low-key, but in his own home as family and friends descend on Augusta. There is an important tournament to play, but he also wants to soak in the experience of sharing it with people he loves. Luke List has traveled a long road, in miles as well as years, to get back to the Masters after making his debut as an amateur in 2005. He has played with members, most notably Jeff Knox, who often is pressed into service during Masters week as a non-competing marker should an odd number of players make the cut. But it has nothing to do with preparing for the first major of the year. Before, I could sort of skirt around it to go practice at Champions Retreat or Augusta Country Club.” Four years ago, List and his wife Chloe decided to move to Augusta, Ga., to raise their family.
Tiger Woods and The Masters. Two things that go together better then anything in sports. While it is not for.
He knows the course like the back of his hand, and has a plethora of winning memories to chose from. After all, he arguably is the greatest golfer of all time. If Tiger Woods does in fact compete in this year’s Masters, it is hard to imagine a scenario where he doesn’t succeed. While it is only Monday, and these swings are taking place on the practice ground, all signs are trending towards a Tiger Woods start, which is truly remarkable. Staying true to the modern media landscape, video began to surface of Woods on the golf course. Sports fans and media were searching for an answer, while Woods seemed to know it all along.
Tiger Woods still hasn't made up his mind. But if he plays, does he have a chance? Mark Schlabach looks at Woods and the entire field to see who can and ...
He finished tied for 29th in 2020, when he became the oldest player to make the cut at 63. He tied for sixth at The Players in March. Since becoming the third Spaniard to win a green jacket, Garcia has missed the cut in each of his past three starts. He missed the cut in each of his first two Masters starts. His best finish in five starts this season was a tie for 14th at the WM Phoenix Open. The four-time PGA Tour player hasn't been great at Augusta National, where he finished in the top 10 only once in four starts, a tie for 10th in 2016. He was runner-up at the 2021 PGA Championship and U. S. Open and had the 54-hole lead at The Open before tying for third. Zalatoris has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but he was phenomenal in the 2021 Masters. He nearly became the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 to win the Masters in his first start, before finishing 1 shot behind Matsuyama for solo second. The 27-year-old Spaniard is no longer No. 1 and hasn't won since the 2021 U. S. Open at Torrey Pines in June. He has finished in the top 10 in each of his past four starts at Augusta National, including a tie for fifth in 2021. He tied for third in 2021 and led the field in strokes gained: tee-to-green. He is attempting to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002 to win back-to-back Masters tournaments. The last time a player ascended to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and made his next start at a major, Ian Woosnam won a green jacket in 1991.

The Spaniard is so comfortable playing at Augusta National that he is in the midst of a 15-round stretch where he has shot even par or lower, a streak that began in the second round of the 2018 Masters. Despite being limited to one nine-hole practice round last year after arriving at Augusta National later than he would normally, following the birth of his first child days earlier, Rahm finished in the top 10 for a fourth consecutive year. U. S. Open champion Jon Rahm is the betting favourite this week at Augusta National, where he has been one of the most consistent competitors since making his Masters debut in 2017. Scheffler was a member of last year’s victorious U. S. Ryder Cup team, where he helped set the tone in singles action on the final day of the event, and has credited his experience on the team for his recent form. Woods announced on Sunday he was headed to Augusta National but that it would be a “game-time” decision whether he tees it up in Thursday’s opening round of the Masters. The 46-year-old Woods was at Augusta National last Tuesday and played 18 holes on a layout that is considered one of the more taxing walks on the PGA Tour given its undulating terrain.
This year, there is a clear-cut No. 1 storyline at Augusta National for the 2022 Masters -- by about 28 miles over the runner-up storyline -- and then a ...
Nobody thinks he's a poor or even mediocre player, but I'm not sure many believe he's the same caliber of No. 1 player in the world as a Dustin Johnson, Thomas or Rahm. He'll drive down Magnolia Lane with a different burden of expectation with nobody ranked ahead of him, which will be difficult, but it's also an opportunity to solidify what his new career trajectory appears to be at the moment, which is as a top 10 golfer in the world (or better) for the next several years. 7. Cameron Smith, POY? Smith has already won two of the biggest events of 2022 with a narrow victory at the Tournament of Champions and a more resounding one at The Players just a month ago. 10. Scheffler a true No.1? When Nick Saban and John Calipari crow that they're so proud of their kids because nobody believed in them throughout the year and they had a chip on their collective shoulder as a result, it's a complete fabrication and manipulation of one or two specific things that were said about them at some point along the way. This time a year ago, he was dragging his leg around this golf course, but he has four top 20s in his last six starts overall, three top 11s in his last four Masters starts and has been a complete and total menace at the majors over the last half decade. 8. All the patrons: For the first time since Woods won in 2019 (!), we'll get to see a full Augusta National this year. There could be other (much smaller) changes as well such as the removal of some of the second cut from the course, which as Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison explain here, means some shots that were slowed down from going into areas with horrible angles will now be allowed to trundle. It will be a celebration of life in general and of the life of someone who could have lost his in that car accident in February 2021. It will also be the celebration of someone who has infused this sport with more life both at this event and generally across the arc of his career than perhaps anyone who came before him and maybe anyone who comes after him, too. 1. Mending Matsuyama: Speaking of last year's champion, after a tremendous start to the year, he skipped The Players Championship with an injury and withdrew from last week's Texas Open with one as well. Part of that is a No. 1 player in the world (Scottie Scheffler) who folks still have some questions about, and part of it is undoubtedly the fact that only one other top 10 player in the world (Cameron Smith) has won an event this calendar year. 2. Course changes: One of the reasons the Masters has aged so well is that Augusta National is always tweaking things. Rory McIlroy's grand slam bid, for example, and even Jordan Spieth's most recent drop off and how it will affect the most prolific Masters golfer in history.
The 2022 Masters begins this week at Augusta National. Here is a look at the favorite heading into the first major of the year.
Last year, he finished fifth at the Masters, tied for eighth at the PGA Championship, tied for third at the Open Championship — and won the U. S. Open. Sign up for an account to get into the action today. No, but I think it shows in the stats worse than it actually feels just because I’m hitting so many greens and hitting it so good.” It feels a lot better than it looks. In eight events this year, Rahm has finished no worse than a tie for 55th — and that was under the funny conditions at the Players Championship. Major championship form? SG: Approach? Rahm was 15th.
Amid his first extended stay as the No. 1 player in the world, Rahm explains how his greatest accomplishment may have been finally gaining a fuller ...
In the news conference, Rahm explained that the condition was a big part of why his backswing is so much shorter than most players' -- "If I take it full to parallel, yeah, it might create more speed, but I have no stability. Doctors had to break his ankle and turn the foot, casting it over and over to keep it in place. Rahm, who had been chatting and joking with Rodgers and the other amateurs in his group all morning, broke off as he approached the 15th green. Writing. Feeling. All of it has allowed what Hayes, the caddie, so eloquently described as the "costume life" that Rahm and all public personalities are required to create to more closely mirror the world in which he lives. "I went from being a college player to top 10 in the world in nine months (and) that is an ascension that I dreamed of, but I wasn't mentally or emotionally ready for what that entailed." It would be easy to peg the turning point in that construct as when Rahm won his first major championship last year -- he readily admits he felt incredible pressure to win one right up until the moment it finally happened -- but Rahm knows that it really isn't just any one thing. "You know, even Kelley," he said, referring to his wife, "she would tell me a lot of times she could tell something was going on with me, and I could feel something was up -- I just didn't know what it was. "And it's happened to me where it comes out on the golf course for no freaking reason." He is hardly the only player to have fits on the course, but it sometimes feels as though his are seen differently -- as defining or confirming of something, as opposed to the out-of-character rush of blood that other players are often afforded. "I think what people misunderstand is the level of vulnerability for professional athletes," he said. And the process of writing has been critical to Rahm's work on better understanding his own anxieties and mental health. "It doesn't count if I do it on the computer," he said flatly.
Morning Read's series on Augusta National Golf Club's back-nine holes continues with the par-4 17th steeped in history.
By the time the tees were moved back again in 2006, the tree that grew to a height of about 65 feet was located about 210 yards from the Masters tee and was becoming difficult to hit over. Nicklaus read the birdie putt as breaking from left to right but back left toward Rae’s Creek at the very end, and the ball did exactly that. The Rules of Golf state that for a player who turns in a score on a hole higher than he actually made, the written score must stand. The loblolly pine became more of a factor when the Masters tees were moved back 25 yards and slightly to the left that year. Nineteen times a player has made the hole’s high score of 7, most recently by Fred Couples and Ted Potter Jr. in 2013. The best plan of attack into the green is from the right side of the fairway.
The former Texas golfer has won three of his last five starts on the PGA Tour entering the season's first major championship.
Scheffler would earn a Masters invitation for life, and invitations to the other three major championships for the next five seasons. Scheffler won the playoff with a 25-foot birdie on the third hole. He saved two difficult pars down the stretch to protect his win. Later, he beat Dustin Johnson and Kevin Kisner on championship Sunday. Entering the 2021-22 season, Scheffler had not won a PGA Tour event, though he had come close. He is primed for the rigors of 72 holes in Augusta, thanks to his hot streak the past two months.
Morning Read's series on Augusta National Golf Club's back-nine holes concludes with the par-4 18th that has coronated numerous champions.
He resorted to a 1-iron off the tee and a 5-iron into the green, but his approach failed to reach the putting surface. It was the first of his 15 major titles and first of five Masters triumphs. He reversed his thinking at the 18th and hit a monstrous drive into the fairway, leaving a 90-yard sand wedge into the green. It was the first Masters won by a non-white player. Watson, though, found the pines on the left, pulled his approach left of the green and ultimately settled for a bogey and second place. … In 1978, Tom Watson arrived at the 18th on Sunday needing either a birdie to win or a par to tie Gary Player. Watson chose a conservative approach and hit 4-wood off the tee to avoid the left bunkers. … In 1979, Ed Sneed had bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes, but nervously clung to a one-stroke lead as he played the final hole on Sunday. His third shot from just off the green came up 6 feet shy of the hole. 2002: Masters tees moved back 55-60 yards and repositioned to the golfer’s right by five yards. The approach is uphill to an elongated, two-tiered green (reportedly 107 feet deep by 50 feet wide) that features bunkers front left and to the right. Trees added left of the fairway bunkers. The finale at Augusta National is an uphill dogleg-right hole that features two massive bunkers where the hole bends slightly to the right. He shot a 77 on Sunday and was not a factor.
Tiger Woods hasn't decided whether he's playing in the 2022 Masters. We track his movements until he makes a final decision.
It is a true testament to his work ethic because we all know what he does on the golf course, how hard he works, and the stories and the legend. Once it was discovered that Woods flew in from Florida, with son Charlie, and played a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club on Tuesday, the speculation started. "He ended up behind me and just joined up with me because it was a little slow in front of us," Davis said. I think the only reason he's not going to play is if he doesn't feel ready or if there is -- just his foot, leg, back, whatever it may be sort of kicks up and then he just doesn't feel ready to play." But sitting there and doing all that [physical therapy], that's got to be just boring at the very least, let alone hard." Billy Horschel: "With everything he's gone through, with all the injuries and with all the personal stuff, he's always -- he still has that drive and that fire within him to still play golf. Everyone wanted a glimpse of Woods when he arrived at Augusta National on Sunday. Cameron Davis was one of the few that saw him up close. Shoot, I've thought about it in the past, and I may be on the first tee watching him tee off if my tee time works out and everything just because it's such a special moment." After Woods returned from multiple back surgeries and knee injuries, Homa said nothing surprises him about the 15-time major champion -- not even Woods returning to play in a major championship just over 14 months after the wreck. While he was clearly getting prepared for the 86th Masters and a run at a sixth green jacket, Woods also enjoyed his afternoon alongside two good friends. Woods has not played a competitive round of golf since the 2020 Masters at Augusta National. He has won this event five times, most recently in 2019. "Just with the rods and plates and screws that are in my leg, I needed something different, something that allowed me to be more stable.
Threesome pairings and groups for Thursday's first round and Friday's second round of the 86th Masters at Augusta National.
Of course, that anticipation is fueled by many of the traditions in place at Augusta National, including those associated the early round pairings. If he’s not in that threesome, expect Nakajima to be paired with another former green jacket winners. An April Masters. With a full complement of patrons.
As the illustrious Masters Tournament quickly approaches, the field begins to prepare to battle one of the toughest courses on tour, Augusta National.
As the 2022 Masters kicks off on April 7th, make sure you tune in to the madness that comes with Amen Corner as most networks are becoming smart enough to focus on these 3 historic holes. However, he did one better, sinking his shot and defeating Norman for the green jacket. In his second round, Strange used a 7-iron from 155 yards out to sink his tee shot for a historic moment in Masters history. After Bellestores was eliminated on Hole 10, Mize and Norman entered Amen Corner looking to make history. Within the 3 holes on Amen Corner, Hole 12, also known as Golden Bell, is the only opportunity for a Hole-in-one. However, with a historical average score of 3.27, it rarely happens. That dropped him to second place, where he finished behind eventual champion Danny Willett. This still remains one of the greatest Masters collapses in recent memory, and surely one that Spieth will not forget.
One of the great traditions at Augusta National continues this week as six amateur stars will take the course.
While his story to even get to Augusta National is remarkable, it's difficult to envision him making the cut and playing the weekend at the most prestigious tournament in the world. He has the longest odds of any amateur to make the cut, which to me makes him the best bet when you consider that he missed it at Royal St. George's by just two strokes. Despite falling to Piot in their heads-up matchup at the U. S. Amateur, Greaser is probably the better overall golfer and has a better chance to play all four rounds at this Masters. I'm probably most excited to watch him of any of the ams in this field. There are several different ways to qualify for a week at Augusta National, which often produces a diverse and interesting group of golfers -- just as we have this year in the 86th edition of this tournament. 3. Austin Greaser (23): Greaser was the runner-up to James Piot at Oakmont and, as a junior in Chapel Hill, is already North Carolina's all-time leader in stroke average.

Who could make some noise from deeper in the field at the 86th Masters Tournament?
I wouldn't be scared away by his six missed cuts in his last seven major starts because I think he's a more consistent golfer right now than he was the first two times he played this event. Finished T4 at Riviera earlier this year, and four of his last five top 20s at Riviera have preceded top 20s two months later at the Masters. He's been terrific so far this year with top 20s in five of his last six events, and he should eventually settle into a better major routine. He's strung together two straight top 10s, and while I have questions about the win equity, I don't have any about his ability to snatch another top-20 showing (or better). It's not difficult to prognosticate that Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm are going to play quality golf at Augusta National at the 86th edition of this tournament. The second is that he's been sneaky good at Augusta for a while now.
On Monday that patron was David LaFontaine, 26, and the proposee Helena Resler, 23, and the only thing redder than Helena's sundress was her face when she ...
“This place means so much to me,” LaFontaine said. It is Masters week, and how can you not be romantic about the Masters? It’s a gathering that can turn the coldest cynic into sounding like Jim Nantz on nitrous oxide. A sacred ground and visually stunning ground. “The 13th is my favorite, but since the 14th doesn’t have any traps, the hope was our marriage wouldn’t have any bunkers to contend with.” But Amen Corner? That is spiritual ground. “Figured it was symbolic,” Berry said.
The Masters countdown is on, and that includes a Tiger Woods countdown as well. Will the biggest source of intrigue tee up on Thursday?
Prior to that, he made his last official tournament appearance at the 2020 Masters in November. He also played the course last week with his son, Charlie, and friend Justin Thomas. The Tiger timeline: Woods' last public appearance was at the 2022 Genesis Invitational, where he said he didn’t know when he was going to play again.
Smith is currently ranked sixth in the world and fresh off a victory at the Players Championship. He's on the rise, and he just might see green this week.
So far, Woods is the only player to have won a Players and a Masters in the same year. “This is a pretty good time of the year to be playing good golf. “The Players, it was nice to tick that box. His celebration after the Players was muted, he said, because he was worn out after a trying weekend. His idea of a good time is a beer or two with the guys and a bit of fishing. “I feel pretty hungry, mate,” Smith said in response to a question from a fellow Aussie media person. Just keeping the tempo up and making sure the ball is hitting the back of the hole and hitting good putts.” Overall, his proximity to the hole rank is 67th. He ranks fifth in greens hit in regulation; eight in strokes gained with approach shots; and 5th in proximity to the hole from 100-125 yards. He’s finished second, fifth and tenth in three of his last four Masters and he’s coming off a convincing victory at The Players Championship that revealed him as the game’s best putter. He has the feel of a 2015 Jordan Spieth 2.0. Smith’s chipping and pitching rival Spieth’s and so does his putting. He just likes The Mullet. As for his mother, “I think she’s coming around to it, slightly,” Smith joked Monday before he went out for a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club.

Instead, the vans are across Washington Road. Almost no one has permission to use a mobile phone on the range or course, so people have to walk back and forth all day. When they go to the Masters, they often take more just to be sure they have everything they could possibly need. But in years in which the course plays firm and fast, high-bounce wedges are not ideal for pitching and chipping the ball off tight fairway lies.
It was only a Masters practice round Monday, but fans followed Tiger Woods at Augusta as if this were the final day of the major tournament.
He was a bit hunched as he chugged up the hill, a climb that looked to require more effort than in years past, but considering what he’s been through, it was nonetheless remarkable. “Driver’s out of the bag,” one of the professional photographers noted as Woods was wrapping up. There’s definitely a different feel in tournaments that he tees it up in.” It started when Woods was warming up, with hundreds of people watching him blast balls out of a practice bunker, with most of his shots winding up within a beach towel of the cup. It’s exceedingly rare for spectators to clap and cheer that way on the driving range. But there he was, matching strides with Justin Thomas and Fred Couples, getting ready for yet another comeback story for the ages.
DeChambeau has struggled in his two events leading into the Masters, while his body continues to recover from a series of early-season injuries.
“You have to get yourself to that back nine, close to the lead. I have to work on getting back there with all facets of my game better than where they have been.” “Did not expect it to be that prevalent, didn't think I would get to that place,” DeChambeau said of the injuries. “But one of the things I didn't do is take care of my hands and my hip like I should have, and I went pretty hard. “It's been a bit of unravelling this knot that I've had in my game for the past four years,” DeChambeau said. “I knew this was going to be a long process,” DeChambeau said.
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The weight of history packed into every inch of Augusta National can be overwhelming. There isn't a tee box, a fairway, a bunker, ...
Bryson DeChambeau continues to battle hand and hip injuries but will tee it up at the Masters against doctor's wishes.
He claimed the time away from the sport “made me a better person” and bestowed an outlook he says he lacked. The focus is the same. You have to get yourself to that back nine, close to the lead. DeChambeau said the injuries prevent him from going “all out.” That he can’t speed train or log the excessive hours he desires on the range. Was the first eliminated from his round-robin group at the WGC-Match Play. Withdrew mid-tournament from the Saudi International and failed to make the weekend at Torrey Pines. Technically DeChambeau hasn’t made a cut since August. He is 214th in the FedEx Cup and though this is the year’s first major the tour season is more than halfway complete. He decided to give it a go because he wanted to give this tournament a run. Still, he was a co-leader after Day 1 in 2019 and turned in a 67 on Friday in 2021. According to DeChambeau the hip injury originally happened when he began his distance odyssey two years ago after slipping on concrete while he felt something “pop” in his hand last fall. It is a performance that is undoubtedly correlated to DeChambeau’s health. Literally speaking, DeChambeau has a break in his hand, a fracture so bad that he’s playing the 2022 Masters against doctor’s recommendation. Sixteen months ago, this was indicative of his pursuit to bend the game to his will. “It's one of those things that everybody has a tough stretch in their career,” DeChambeau said Monday afternoon.

While Mickelson will not be spotted on the famed Augusta National layout with the game’s top players, he will likely be a hot topic in the media, specifically at Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley’s pre-tournament news conference on Wednesday. (Reuters) – Phil Mickelson has been as much a part of the Masters as the vibrant azaleas at Augusta National and his absence this week after incendiary remarks about a Saudi-funded golf league will leave the year’s first major without a long-time fan favourite. Three-times champion Mickelson has made 29 career starts at the Masters and this week marks his first absence since he sat out the 1994 edition while recovering from a broken leg suffered in a skiing accident.

He pushed his tee shot into the bunker just right of the fairway at the par-5 second then played safely down the fairway. Woods couldn’t keep the smile off his face, nor could the patrons, nor could playing partners Thomas and Fred Couples. Woods’ face betrayed a deep happiness to be back in competition mode, worrying not about whether he can walk but about whether he can hold an 8-iron into a right-to-left wind. “We’re finally moving in a direction that I feel is positive for me being able to win again,” DeChambeau said. “When you don’t have everybody yelling your name or chanting whatnot, it kind of can be almost relaxing in a sense,” he said. After missing the cut at Torrey Pines in late January, DeChambeau headed over to Saudi Arabia and withdrew after one round. A year ago, when the Masters returned to its usual spot in the spring, DeChambeau turned in another lackluster showing. “I can’t go all-out,” DeChambeau said. “I can’t do any speed training sessions. He didn't play for nearly two months. “Yelling ‘Fore!’ off the tee every time is just not fun." I’ve got to be careful with things and really be efficient and limit the amount of golf balls I can hit.” DeChambeau didn't come close to backing up those bold words. Your worst failures are your best teachers. Most memorably, he lost a ball at No. 3 — the shortest par-4 on the course, and one of the holes where he considered par to be a birdie — and was out of contention before he even got to the weekend.

Canadian viewers will be able to watch the Masters on TSN and CTV during the tournament. CBS will broadcast the Masters on the weekend. They each will offer plenty of other Masters content to watch, including coverage of featured holes 4, 5, 6, 15 and 16 as well as the event's iconic "Amen Corner." Golf fans are going to want to see their favorite players jockey for position on the leaderboard throughout the four-day event. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson will not be participating in the event for the first time in 28 years. Additionally, defending champion Hideki Matsuyama is dealing with a neck injury, so if he can't play, the field will be wide open.

[Can Hideki Matsuyama challenge?] It depends on the extent of the injury. I believe he has learnt from those comments. Having Tiger here, could help him a little in terms of distracting the media but, saying that, Rory knows what is at stake. And if there is anybody that can navigate this golf course by not having their 'A' game but by just being so strong mentally, it definitely would be Tiger. I think the only expectation Rory McIlroy feels is from himself. Why not this year?
Last year's Masters showed just how hard it is to pick the winner of a golf tournament. Hideki Matsuyama entered off showing some mediocre form and left ...
Thomas is fifth on tour in strokes gained: approach, which is a key statistic every week but even more so at Augusta National. The last seven leaders in approach at the Masters finished first, first, second, third, first, first and eighth for that year’s tournament. Matsuyama last year became the eighth Masters champion out of the past 12 and 12th out of the past 17 who had either a previous green jacket or a top 10 finish on his resume. There are only three former Masters champions in this year’s field whose recent play suggests at least a viable shot at victory: Dustin Johnson (+1600 to win), Jordan Spieth (+2200) and Adam Scott (+5500) Among the players near the top of the odds board with previous top 10s: Jon Rahm (+900), Justin Thomas (+1400), Cameron Smith (+1400), Rory McIlroy (+2000), Xander Schauffele (+2000), Brooks Koepka (+2000), Patrick Cantlay (+2500) and Corey Conners (+5500). All of these golfers have my attention, for now. That’s Scott, the 2013 Masters champion who hasn’t won anywhere since 2020 at Riviera and has just one top 10 at Augusta National since winning a green jacket. Yes, he’s only played in two Masters, finishing T-18 last year and T-19 in 2020, but at some point you have to go with the hot hand, and Scheffler’s are blazing right now.My one worry with Scheffler is that he’s played a whole lot of golf recently, with five rounds in his WGC Match Play triumph, and none of the past four April winners had advanced all that deep into the Match Play tournament that annually precedes the Masters (Tiger Woods, a quarterfinalist in 2019, made the deepest run before winning the Masters). The Australian with the proud, flowing mullet checks a whole lot of boxes. He’s finished inside the top 10 in three of the last four Masters. This could be the year for the 28-year-old Smith.Thomas has always been a little snake-bitten at Augusta National, with a fourth-place finish in 2020 his only top 10. If a Masters rookie wins this year, good for him, but I’m crossing all of this year’s first-timers off my list: Sam Burns, Cameron Davis, Talor Gooch, Lucas Herbert, Garrick Higgo, Harry Higgs, Tom Hoge, K.H. Lee, Min Woo Lee, Guido Migliozzi, Sepp Straka, Cameron Young, Seamus Power, Harold Varner III and J.J. Spaun. There, we’ve cut away another 15 golfers.Repeating as Masters champion is also difficult, and only three golfers have ever done it (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods). Even finishing near the top of the leader board one year after winning is tough: Of the past 20 defending champions, only four have finished in the top 10 the following year, with four — including Johnson last year — missing the cut entirely. Cross them all off: James Piot, Austin Greaser, Laird Shepherd, Keita Nakajima, Stewart Hagestad and Aaron Jarvis. Six more victims!Of the past 22 Masters winners, 15 entered the tournament ranked in the top 12 of the Official World Golf Ranking. This year’s top 12 entering the tournament: Scottie Scheffler, Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Cantlay, Smith, Thomas, Johnson, McIlory, Schauffele, Burns and Matsuyama. This eliminates players such as Koepka (17th), Daniel Berger (21st) and Kevin Kisner (27th).Of the past 11 Masters champions, only Matsuyama did not have at least two top-12 stroke-play finishes in the calendar year of the tournament, either on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. Matsuyama’s best calendar-year finish ahead of last year’s win was a tie for 15th. But what if I told you that surprise winners at Augusta National like Matsuyama are rare, and there’s a way to narrow down an already-small field (compared with most other events) to single out which players have the best chance at Masters success?Instead of trying to guess who can win, this exercise will take a look at who most likely cannot win, eliminating their names from betting contention. Another one bites the dust.No amateur ever has won the Masters, and there are six in this year’s field. (I’ll get to Matsuyama in a moment.)As for other past winners in the field, they’re either in middling form or simply past their competitive primes. From there, we can piece together a few golfers to fill out our betting card.Everything you need to know about the 2022 MastersAccording to Datagolf, course history is far more predictive at Augusta National than at any other course in the PGA Tour rotation. The group of contenders at the Masters is getting longer as golf is getting deeper. One highlight could be the official return of Tiger Woods to professional golf. Like others, he said he hopes to see superstar Tiger Woods play again this year after suffering debilitating injuries in a car accident last year. Like other golfers, he said it would be great to see superstar Tiger Woods out on the course again. Rory McIlroy is always worth watching as he goes for the final leg of the Grand Slam. As for Tiger Woods? He hasn’t announced whether he’ll play. Asked if there’s a distinctive style of golf in japan that gave him an edge last year in the Masters, he said: “Golf is golf. He added: “I’ve spent the last year looking at it a lot. “I bought this for my accountant,” said a patron from Ohio showing a purchase. Reflecting on the past year as a champion, he said, “It’s been a great year. He said his initial injury was suffered at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in the second round, and since then, it’s been a struggle. “I’ve spent a little bit of time with him at home, and the golf is there. The forecast calls for the potential of severe weather this afternoon.
I've had two opportunities to pick the menu for my fellow winners. The choices I made both times said a lot about where I was in my life.
I remember sitting in that room the first time realizing that I was going to be part of this for the rest of my life. I picked it because I wanted to give thanks to the country that had become my new home — I had lived in America for about a decade by then — and to the Lord. I had become a Christian by 1994. The choices I made both times said a lot about where I was in my life.

He and his son finished second when John Daly and his son birdied the last hole. That he was returning Sunday was a good sign. Woods won the U. S. The 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama released his dinner menu Tuesday with a lot of Japanese inspired cuisine. Not gonna lie, I'd absolutely crush this meal.
Everyone would be treated to some Honey Gold and Lemon Pepper wings catered by the Wing Guru with a special appearance of banana pudding from Central BBQ. The previous year’s Masters champion sets the menu for all past Masters winners in a Tuesday dinner for the ages. This is a post the Cup has done year in and year out, but let’s review.

Woods is expecting to make his highly anticipated return to golf on the sport's grandest stage.
If I feel like I can compete at the highest level, I'm going to," Woods said Tuesday. "... I don't show up to an event unless I think I can win it. That happened to be his first public appearance and the first time he was asked any questions about what happened in February. Throughout that week, he insisted that he was a long way from playing competitive golf again, but videos from the driving range told the story of somebody whose swing still looked terrific. Thankful for all the surgeons and doctors and nurses that, for all the countless surgeries that we went through and countless rehabs and the PT sessions are brutal, but it's still mine and I'm very thankful for that." Not only does Tiger need his swing to be in order, but his back -- that has incurred nearly a half-dozen surgeries -- and right leg (that hasn't endured four rounds of tournament play in nearly two years) will have to hold up under the most intense pressure imaginable. It's going to be a tough challenge and a challenge I'm up for." Tiger Woods is planning to make his triumphant return to golf as part of the 2022 Masters field.

Wagyu beef, sushi and strawberry shortcake are among the choices by the first Japanese Masters champion.
Black cod is said to be ultra healthy as well as rich and buttery. Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters 10 years after he was low amateur in 2011. The entrees are black cod, glazed with miso, which is a traditional Japanese seasoning.

“It is with pleasure that I accept your invitation to play in the Masters Tournament,” Claude Harmon said in a Western Union telegram the next year. Then there is Woods’s distinctive signature on a piece of paper that could have been bought in a department store stationery aisle. The opportunity to play today is hardly a surprise — Augusta National publishes a roster of clear-cut ways to qualify, from being a previous Masters champion to finishing in the top four at the previous year’s P.G.A. Championship, though it has the authority to ask others to compete. “Both of them are ones I’m going to save and cherish forever,” he said at a news conference in 2019, even though he did not know where his other invitations had wound up over the years. (Woods’s agent did not respond to inquiries about who wrote the 1995 letter.) Everything in business is negotiable except quality, and that embraces it to the hilt.” “It is always a treat. It’s the way they do things.” They get that formal invitation, and it’s there before you, and it’s, ‘Wow, I’m qualified to play in the event.’” If the invitations are almost entirely unchanged across the generations, the responses are still evolving. “To me, it reflects what Bob Jones always retained on nearly everything that’s at Augusta: It’s proper, it has a certain amount of grace to it, there’s a touch of humility,” Crenshaw said. Neither Crenshaw nor Player could recall any other tournament with quite such a habit, or, at least, not one quite so polished.

Piot earned his ticket to Augusta by winning the U.S. Amateur championship at Oakmont last summer. It was the craziest thing in the world having Augusta National to yourself. Woods is playing the Masters for the first time since 2020. It's really cool to be able to play with some of golf's greats," Piot said Tuesday. "It's even cooler to be playing with the defending champion one group behind Tiger Woods. I'm excited to see how the crowd will be following him. I mean, being an amateur and being able to be out at Augusta National alone, it was a memory I'll never forget." Piot, 23, a Canton native, is getting the full experience at Augusta National Golf Club. He's staying in the cramped, twin-bed-filled Crow's Nest, reserved for the six amateur competitors, through Tuesday night. "It was just me and my caddie (MSU assistant coach Dan Ellis)," Piot said Monday. "Nobody else, no members around the course. On Sunday, playing with fellow amateur Aaron Jarvis, he sort of stalked Woods. Then Tiger gets out there, what's he doing? What's he wearing? (Piot, if you were curious, is ranked 1,706th, but 60th in amateur rankings.) Safe to say, the pace of play for Piot and Jarvis sped up on the back nine, as they were more concerned with watching Woods from a distance than they were in actually preparing for the tournament.
Here's a look at what Tiger Woods has endured since wearing the green jacket at the Masters in 2019.
Woods wins the Masters by one stroke to take home his fifth green jacket since 1997. Luna Perrone says the world's most famous golfer, who was still using crutches, encouraged her to "stay strong" and posed for a photograph with her. Woods, the reigning champion, will have to wait to defend his title. Woods announces that he's planning to play in the Masters. Woods announces that he has returned to his home in Florida as he recovers from the crash. Tiger Woods announced Tuesday that he's planning to play in the Masters. If he follows through on his intentions, it will be his first PGA Tour competition since the pandemic-delayed Masters in 2020.
Where does Tiger Woods land? What about Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas?
77. Guido Migliozzi (first appearance): After grinning his way to a T4 at the U.S. Open at Torrey last year, he's made just one cut in 2022, and it was a T67 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship. He's somehow lost strokes in every statistical category in every tournament except for the three events in which he narrowly gained strokes off the tee. 74. Takumi Kanaya (T58 in 2019): Kanaya is coming off a good showing at the match play in Austin, but broadly speaking, he's not a great iron player, which seems problematic in a week like this one. 67. Charl Schwartzel (Won in 2011): Schwartzel has had a completely bizarre record at Augusta since winning maybe the wildest Masters of all time in 2011. 57. Jason Kokrak (49th in 2021): No top 20s since his Houston Open win last fall, and he's likely been preoccupied by the LIV Golf operating agreement and nursing Phil Mickelson back to full capacity. 46. Bubba Watson (Won in 2012, 2014): This tournament marks the 10-year anniversary of his famous hooking shot out of the woods on the 10th hole. 45. Kevin Kisner (T21 in 2019): He's been playing such tremendous golf, but this is not a course that necessarily sets up that well for him, and his history here (two straight missed cuts and no top-20 finishes) shows it. 22. Marc Leishman (T4 in 2013): I imagine he's been running Leishman National pretty fast on the stimpmeter for a few weeks now to help him prepare for this year's event. 11. Viktor Hovland (T21 in 2021): He would be in the top five if his short game was in order. 10. Jordan Spieth (Won in 2015): In the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021 Masters, Spieth beat or tied 447 of 453 competitors (98.7%). He somehow has one green jacket. 6. Scottie Scheffler (T18 in 2021): It feels foolish to have the No. 1 player in the world this low, but Scheffler is not your normal No. 1 player in the world. 8. Dustin Johnson (Won in 2020): Over his last 50 rounds following the WGC-Dell Match Play, D.J.'s strokes gained tee to green numbers were below Adam Hadwin, C.T. Pan and Martin Laird. He played well at Austin Country Club, but a lot of that was due to a putter that's been smoking for a while now. Dumping his tee shot into the water on No. 16 last year as soon as he got within striking distance of Hideki Matsuyama was not encouraging, but it also seems statistically impossible to get into contention as much as he has (eight top-seven finishes in 18 majors) and not eventually win one.
