Louis C.K. Wins a Grammy for His Comedy Album About Cancellation (Vanity Fair)

Nearly five years after admitting to sexual misconduct, the comedian won best comedy album at the 2022 Grammys.

But by 2018, he returned to the stage with a handful of sets at New York City’s Comedy Cellar. In August 2021, C.K. announced a nationwide comedy tour. I learned how to eat alone in a restaurant with people giving me the finger from across the room.” Anybody else get in global amounts of trouble?” adding, “I learned a lot. At the time, C.K. released a statement, saying, “These stories are true. It was C.K.’s third win in this category—following victories in 2012 and 2016. Louis C. K.’s post-“cancellation” road is apparently paved in gold.

The comedian didn't appear at the 2022 Grammys ceremony, which was held Sunday night at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. CBS also didn't televise his win.

"There's a lot of funny stuff on the album but it's impossible not to listen to him in a different way than before," he tweets as part of a thread. "Now I'm aware of the extent of the impact of my actions. In a statement released at the time, C.K. said "these stories are true," but he maintained "I never showed a woman my dick without asking first." "It's not very silly when it happens, not much of a goof. The accounts had a theme: C.K. would routinely start masturbating in front of women without permission, or he would ask them to watch him masturbate. See Louis C. K., a man who went back on the stand-up comedy circuit less than a year after admitting in 2017 to pulling out his penis and masturbating in front of female comics.

“What else does he have to do to earn back our respect? “By foisting the embarrassment of a so-called Grammy ‘Award’ on C.K., we are sending the message to terrified men everywhere that one little innocent pattern of predatory harassment can have consequences.” “What are they going to do next, make him beg for scraps on the street?” In 2017, Louis C. K. was unjustly cancelled by the relentless slander of an intensive New York Times investigation into his lengthy history of sexual misconduct. The Recording Academy defended C. K.’s Grammy nomination, arguing that they have no control over their own process. C. K.’s win has also sparked backlash and debate.

Louis CK's Grammy Win Sparks Online Outrage (TV Insider)

Disgraced standup star Louis C.K. won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards on Sunday night, leading to immense online backlash.

I wonder if the careers of the women comedians Louis CK forced to watch him masturbate—who were allegedly threatened by CK’s manager—have recovered from the stigma of coming forward. Louis CK’s own career seems to have bounced back very well. And thanks so much to our industry for once again telling us that survivors don’t matter,” wrote comedian and actor Sarah Ann Masse, who was a victim of disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein. However, despite losing his television deal with FX and seeing the distribution of his film, I Love You Daddy, halted, C. K. would return to touring less than a year later. Louis CK just won a GRAMMY. “cancel culture” seems pretty selective hm? Burton announced C.K. as the winner to a muted response from the live audience while a backing band played on stage. The controversial comic received the award for his self-produced show Sincerely, his first since admitting to acts of sexual misconduct in 2017. Louis C.K.'s Grammy Win Stirs Questions & Controversy (Billboard)

Louis C.K.'s 2022 Grammy for best comedy album was his first major award since a 2017 scandal in which he admitted to sexual misconduct.

Before the scandal, C. K., 54, was one of the most successful comedians of his era, success that was reflected in awards. The Academy has a new rule in place, informally called “the 10/3 rule,” which was intended to cut down on the practice of voters roaming around the ballot and voting in categories in which they’re not experts. C. K. also caught a break when the Recording Academy ruled that Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs), the biggest hit of the year on Billboard’s Comedy Albums chart, didn’t meet the criteria to compete in the category. In 2020, C. K. released a new comedy special, Sincerely Louis CK, on his website. We’ll take a look at anyone who is asking to be a part of that, asking to be in attendance, and we’ll make our decisions at that point. He also won for Hilarious (2011) and Live at Madison Square Garden (2015). C.K. is one of only three comedians to win in the category three times since 2000, along with the late George Carlin and Chappelle. (There are 24 fields, not counting the General Field, which houses the Big Four categories.) Two other nominees in the category this year were also repeat nominees. Louis C. K.’s Grammy win for best comedy album on Sunday was his first major award since a 2017 scandal in which he admitted to several incidents of sexual misconduct. But we’re not going to be in the business of restricting people from submitting their work for our voters to decide on.” “We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria? Even so, the very fact that he won has stirred controversy and raised questions.

Why on Earth would the Grammys give Louis C.K. an award? (Mic)

In this year's case, at Sunday's 64th annual Grammy awards, it was the Recording Academy giving out a Grammy to defamed comic Louis C.K. for Best Comedy Album ...

Others have pointed out in the backlash to last night’s win for C.K. that a good deal of the comics who spoke out in horror at Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at last week’s Academy Awards have been mostly silent on the situation with Louis C.K. — suggesting not just racism, but also that people don’t believe women in these matters, even when C.K. has admitted to what happened. The Grammy win enraged many fans and industry professionals who see the award as not just an oversight, but as a dangerous signal that people (especially powerful, straight white men) can abuse and still earn the highest honors in their fields. Ultimately, it’s about accountability, and the Recording Academy last night proved that it has no interest in being part of any machine that holds men who abuse their power to hurt people accountable. The accusations were first reported by the New York Times, but rumors on the matter had circulated for years, proving just how hard it is to out a powerful man even when people are aware that he’s doing horrible things. “At the time, I said to myself that what I did was OK because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true. Sarah Ann Masse, a Hollywood professional who was one of the over 80 women to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, wrote on Twitter, “Louis CK just won a GRAMMY. “[C]ancel culture” seems pretty selective hm? “... The power I had over these women is that they admired me. But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your dick isn't a question. Also, the Academy’s decision to not televise the moment shows that they know the criticism that comes with honoring a man who has admitted to serial sexual misconduct. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.” C.K. lost contracts with Netflix, Universal Pictures, and FX over the revelations, and outside of a few protested performances at the Comedy Cellar, he has been a comedy pariah. But in his comeback special, Sincerely Louis C.K., the comic still joked about what the #MeToo movement did to him. Music’s biggest night rarely goes off without something problematic happening — that’s the nature of the beast for self-congratulatory celebrations for the rich and famous.

Guest Column: Blame Louis C.K.'s Grammy Comeback on Comedy's ... (Hollywood Reporter)

"The message this award sends to C.K.'s victims and other female comics and comedy writers is that their cries will fall on deaf ears – and might well backfire, ...

When I sat across Louis C. K. at the Comedy Cellar, I thought to myself, “This guy has two daughters.” His lack of empathy is pretty jarring if that alone doesn’t open his eyes. But when I think about how the world he works in – the world that supports and nurtures him – carries that same lack of empathy, then it makes sense. The message this award sends to C. K.’s victims and other female comics and comedy writers is that their cries will fall on deaf ears – and might well backfire. The comedy establishment sends a dog whistle to sexual predators, forgiving their abusive actions as long as they offer a superficial apology (often drafted by their publicists) and go underground for year or so. His unwilling audience members, who were less powerful colleagues in the industry, spoke out about his sexual misconduct and several felt that their comedy careers were stymied by his protectors as a direct consequence. I was in New York City for the NY Comedy Festival when I was invited by a comedian friend to the Comedy Cellar. Being invited was the only way I could have gotten in. It’s a club of people – male and female – who favor boys. It started to come together: The boys’ club isn’t a club of boys. As a female comedian who’s experienced her share of misogyny and sexual harassment in this business, I cannot imagine how Louis C. K.’s victims must be feeling at this moment. It had no shortage of great and famous comedians to put onstage and put butts in seats. I thought, “How is this guy allowed at the club after his five finger shuffle in front of unsuspecting innocent women?” After all, this was a prestigious comedy club. And yet I was surprised to learn that the booker of the club was a woman.

Can we stop pretending that men's careers are over after admitted misconduct or accuasations made against them?

The latter was for his 2021 single "Jail," which includes a second part that features vocals from rapper DaBaby and singer Marilyn Manson, both of whom he befriended after their respective "cancelling" due to homophobic comments and sexual assault allegations. Wallen was previously removed from the ACM ballot only a year ago and indefinitely suspended by his record label after he was caught on video spewing a racial slur and other profanities. West, who was not in attendance after being barred from performing at the awards show due to his "concerning online behavior," took home two awards — one for best melodic rap performance and another for best rap song. Following the public mea culpa, the disgraced comedian was dropped from multiple TV and film deals, including with FX Networks, Netflix and Universal Pictures. A year later, C.K. attempted to make his comeback with a slew of performances and comedy tours. C. K., who admitted to sexual misconduct in 2017, won the award for best comedy album for his 2020 special, "Sincerely Louis C.K," in which he joked about his sexual misconduct and the #MeToo movement. The message was followed by a performance of "Free" from 12-time Grammy award winner John Legend along with Siuzanna Iglidan, Mika Newton and Lyuba Yakimchuck, three Ukrainian artists.

Louis C.K.'s Grammy Victory Leads to Backlash (The New York Times)

Some comedians are questioning how the Recording Academy saw fit to bestow an award to someone who had admitted to sexual misconduct.

The response to his Grammy was less joyous. But Louis C. K. returned to stand-up, first at comedy clubs and then at bigger venues, which often sold out. Louis C. K. did, after he admitted, in 2017, to masturbating in front of women.

It's natural to feel a flare of disgust when a disgraced man is given a shot at a professional comeback — and there's no doubt that was the reaction of many ...

The first part of setting new norms is the easiest: Of course it was wrong for C.K. to masturbate in front of fledgling female comics, or for the producer Harvey Weinstein to use his studio to prey on victims. It’s a sign that the reckoning, in this case, has stuck. The risk — of sexual harassment lawsuits, of horrible publicity, of sinking money into a project that can’t ultimately be released — is probably still too high. Louis C.K.’s Grammy isn’t a defeat for the #MeToo movement. His professional community can recognize the excellence of his art while still expressing moral disapproval of the artist who created it. And he gets to keep the money. Some of the women didn’t believe the request was serious until C.K. began to disrobe. His only acting role in the past five years was in a French-language miniseries, “ La meilleure version de moi-même,” starring his girlfriend, Blanche Gardin. C.K. seemed to believe that because — at least in some cases — he’d asked permission, it was above board for him to go below the belt. And while C.K. began booking live shows again a few years later, the covid-19 pandemic put a full-fledged comeback on hold. After the Times story, the distributor for C.K.’s feature film canceled its release. And he certainly isn’t getting to make new TV shows or direct feature films.

Where's All the Outrage From Male Comedians Over Louis C.K. ... (InsideHook)

The Will Smith slap caused an uproar, but no one has said a word about an admitted sex offender winning a Grammy.

We can argue over whether award shows are dumb and irrelevant, but there’s no denying that handing someone a trophy is an endorsement of them and their behavior. (You can read Kirkman’s full story of her interaction with C.K. here, but the gist of it is that she thought he was workshopping a bit when he asked her, proving that his “I always asked for consent” argument is perhaps more complicated than he’d care to admit.) And yet, when it comes to assaults on female comedians specifically, they’ve been eerily silent; since Louis C.K., who admitted to masturbating in front of several women (many of whom were also comedians) without their consent in 2017, won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album last Sunday, many of the performers who spoke out about how traumatized they are by the Rock slap have kept mum about his controversial victory. Where is all the outrage in the comedy community over Louis C.K.’s win? A slew of famous comedians have already spoken out about the dangerous precedent set by the actor’s assault on Chris Rock, arguing it gives others who are offended by a comic’s jokes permission to physically attack them. Not one has reached out to say he’s going to do something with other men to wipe rape culture from comedy.
