The Jayhawks beat the Wildcats 81-65 and the North Carolina Tar Heels beat the Duke Blue Devils 81-77 to advance to the final.

Those 2019-20 Jayhawks finished 28-3 and won their last 16 games of the regular season before the NCAA tournament was canceled for the first time in the history ...
"In the Elite Eight, we were saying, 'We come to Kansas for big games, but you don't come to Kansas to play the Elite Eight,'" Braun said. A 24-12 lead against Providence gave KU control of that game in the Sweet 16 and a late rally helped secure the win. Early in the second half, Abgaji burst to the corner to launch a 3-pointer but he was soon doubled, so he threw a pass to Christian Braun on the block. Villanova played without guard Justin Moore, who suffered a torn Achilles in the team's Elite Eight win over Houston, and from the start of the game his absence from a rotation that relies on just six players was clear. We played a lot of games that were really close down the stretch. Kansas had leads of 10-0, 16-5, 26-11 and 38-19 before a 10-0 Villanova run cut the lead to 10 just before halftime. I thought that was probably as prepared a team to do well in the tournament as any we've had." "Just talking with [Self], he wanted us to have an inside presence, and usually, if you can play inside-out, it opens up more shots, more driving lanes, a lot of cuts," McCormack said after the game. And Villanova earned compassion after Moore's injury impacted Jay Wright's pursuit of his third national title in six years. "[It's the confidence] in everybody," said Braun, who scored 10 points and hit a pair of crucial 3-pointers late in the game. Self remembered that team following Saturday night's 81-65 win over Villanova on Saturday night in the Final Four at the Superdome and said the Jayhawks will be playing in the national title game for them, too. "I think it does have added value to me and the players because there's no guarantees in this tournament," Self said Saturday. "A lot of times, the favorites don't win, obviously.
The Wildcats were down early and never closed the gap, ending the year with a 81-65 loss and missing out on the NCAA championship game.

As the crowd waited for the game to start, they sang along and danced excitedly to music blaring from the stadium’s speakers. For students like junior Amanda Ashton, 20, this year marked her first real March Madness experience, one that swayed her decision to come to Villanova when she toured the school in 2018.Ashton went to all of the Villanova basketball games her freshman year.”We were looking forward to having maybe a championship then but with COVID we didn’t get to see any of that and no game sophomore year,” she said. “Coming back junior year, we were really excited to get this far in the championship and get to actually see Villanova for the good basketball school everyone talks about.” To know that about Gillespie was to understand that Saturday night promised to test the strength of his implacable exterior in a way that nothing in his Villanova career had before. Despite the Jayhawks’ early and steady lead, spirits remain high at the Pavilion with fans erupting in cheers with every Villanova basket like it’s a game winning shot. That Agbaji would play such a central role was hard to see coming when he arrived in Lawrence five years ago. When Agbaji sliced through the Villanova defense and dished to McCormack for a rim-rattling dunk, Kansas had thrust its lead to 26-11 a little more than 10 minutes into the game, prompting a timeout by Villanova. “That can become a problem for us.”

"I could say for myself that they were definitely going to win (the NCAA tournament). They were at a high. We at least want to remember this moment, we felt like we were on top of the world. "They were all upset," said Yesufu, a transfer from Drake, who was in class when he learned via text that the 2020 NCAA Tournament had been canceled. "We were playing Xavier (in the Big East tournament) and we won. "I know exactly where I was," McCormack, a senior forward, said Friday of the moment he learned the season was canceled. But the latter group has heard the stories from their teammates about just how good that team was and what its players believed they could accomplish.

Dubbed the “other” semifinal in a historic Duke vs UNC Final Four, the Jayhawks delivered a clear message in their win over Villanova.
Not to the Jayhawks, not to their coach and not on Monday night. The last time these teams played in a late-season NCAA tournament contest, the Wildcats opened a 22–4 lead in 2018 and ran away not only from the Jayhawks but toward their second one shining moment in three seasons. The Jayhawks certainly were experienced, their roster full of seniors and super seniors and players who had lived through so much uncertainty and turbulence. Kansas was the more talented team, the deeper team and the healthier team. Self liked to say that Agbaji reminded him of Danny Manning, one of the best players in the history of a program laden with worthy candidates. But Agbaji’s scoring had dropped in the NCAA tournament, bottoming out with a five-point effort in Kansas’s win over Providence in the Sweet 16. This was the same guard who hadn’t received a Power 5 scholarship offer until the final semester of his senior year in high school, who went to Kansas, to play for Self, the one coach who believed in him. He became an All-American and won everything in sight this season: Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 tournament MVP, Big 12 title. For the next two hours, a basketball game transformed into a demolition derby that doubled as a reaffirmation of Kansas men’s basketball and its national title chances. In some ways, the disinterest of Kansas-Villanova centered on the Wildcats, who were busy cobbling together another game-plan adjusted for injury to worry about things like interest. Then they walloped a good-but-overmanned opponent, from the opening tip to the final buzzer, winning easily, 81–65. Their victory, in both style and thoroughness, reminded a nation of college basketball fans obsessed with every Krzyzewski hand movement that perhaps the widespread belief in the inevitably of a Duke title was, at the very least, a little wishful or premature. Reminder: on March 25, Kansas passed Kentucky for the most wins in the history of men’s college basketball.

The first minutes of the game were a blizzard of Agbaji 3s and post feeds to McCormack, who was just too much for the Wildcats to handle. They were the best team in the country two years ago when COVID-19 derailed their tourney chances, and they might very well be the best team remaining in 2022. The Jayhawks were forcing the ball in the post to McCormack early and often; he scored two baskets in the opening two minutes and was getting touches on nearly every possession. McCormack was always going to be the key against Villanova. The Wildcats simply didn't have the size to handle him, so it came down to whether he could stay out of foul trouble, stay on the floor and be effective. Villanova and Gonzaga are the only truly elite programs in that category. Kansas got the 2022 Final Four off to a smoking start on Saturday night at the Caesars Superdome, running out to a 10-0 lead and keeping Villanova at arm's length the rest of the way for the 81-65 victory. Throw in multiple Olympic gold medals and he is arguably the most accomplished coach in the history of the sport. Self likes to play a big man who can do a lot of work in the paint, and surround him with a collection of big, versatile guards and forwards who can make an impact on the perimeter and around the rim. The biggest Duke storyline entering 2022-23 won't be about the players, of course; it will be the Blue Devils' first season under Jon Scheyer and their first season starting without Coach K since 1980. And on Saturday night, two incredible teams combined for the most important and memorable encounter in their unforgettable history. The game was the final one of Krzyzewski's Hall of Fame career, and the loss denied him a shot at a sixth national title. That it was an epic contest with so many momentum swings and subplots only adds to the legend.
