Will GameStop Regret the Upcoming Stock Split? (Motley Fool)

Video game retailer GameStop ( GME 5.33% ) is planning to split its stock, probably later this year. Investors love the idea, sending GameStop shares as ...

The stock traded for less than $5 per share in the summer of 2000, when the market cap was less than $300 million. The old business model isn't working, and GameStop needs to overcome its high capital costs in a hurry. Nokia doubled its share count in 1995, again in 1998, and once again in the spring of 2000. Ericsson took some action along the way, doing a reverse stock split at a ratio of 1-for-10 in 2002. GameStop is now searching for a long-term strategy, but its management team and board of directors have been tight-lipped about the details of this strategy shift. Mind you, we're still talking about experienced leaders in the telecom sector with multibillion-dollar market caps and massive revenue -- but the stock splits of the golden age dropped their share prices into the low single digits. And as the cellphone market recovered from these calamities, the market meltdown of 2008 coincided with the arrival of modern smartphones. Ericsson ran through a 4-for-1 split in 1995 and another 4-for-1 in early 2000, sandwiching a 2-for-1 split between those actions in 1998. Nokia was the king of mobile phones before the smartphone revolution took place, and Ericsson was a serious contender. From early 1995 to the end of 1999, Ericsson's share price gained 511% while Nokia delivered a return of 1,970%. Selling more shares on the open market is another option, in case GameStop needs to raise some extra cash. GameStop is asking shareholders to boost the number of authorized shares from 300 million to 1 billion.

GME Stock News: What Does It Mean When Stocks Split? (Investorplace.com)

GME stock has been a big mover on news of a stock split proposal. Here's what this news actually means for GameStop shareholders.

GameStonk, Revisited: GME Stock Split Plan Announced (CNET)

There's been renewed interest in meme stocks GME and AMC since mid March when their share prices started rallying again. So when will GameStop split its stock? The date for the annual shareholder meeting has yet to be announced, but historically the ...

The SEC filing denotes that the stock split is intended to provide "flexibility for future corporate needs." Take it with a few grains of salt, however, since GME is in a peculiar position in the stock market. Once the stock split occurs, the share price is lowered, making it more accessible to retail investors and company employees with stock compensation plans. In a stock split, the issuing company doesn't raise any capital for its own use. A stock split essentially makes the stock more accessible and flexible. If a company wants to increase the number of shares, say for a stock split or a public offering to raise capital, it needs shareholder approval to do so.

GameStop's Meme Stock Is Back With A Vengeance (Kotaku)

Pixie dust and crypto dreams are once again propelling GameStop into uncharted territory.

As always, the people left out of Cohen’s machiavellian market moves and Reddit’s meme stock shiposting are the thousands of people working in the actual stores that deliver actual revenue. “All you’re doing when you buy their stock is enable their—and excuse my English—but rather shit treatment on the employees. It’s something companies often do to drive short-term hype, but in GameStop’s case it can also make it easier for random posters on Reddit and elsewhere to get in on the action. Throughout the GameStop meme stock saga, there’s always been a dispute over how much of it was driven by extremely online trolls versus large and mid-sized professional investors. It was a move valued at roughly $10 million, and a signal to other investors–and Cohen’s rabid fanbase in the meme stock community–that he has big plans and full confidence in the debilitated retailer. People have been waiting for the GameStop bubble to pop for over a year now.
