Movie review: Chris Pine excels as veteran who enters world of ... (Lowell Sun)

Chris Pine slips into his best spy-wear for Tarik Saleh's “The Contractor,” a character study (cloaked as a thriller) of a U.S. Army Ranger who tries his ...

When it starts to get a bit grittier, the handheld camera comes in, as Pine has to muck about in the mud and literally go underground to find the truth. His performance is as efficient as the script, which Saleh in turn mirrors with a crisp, smooth aesthetic. But Pine is never better than when he’s opposite magnetic character actor Foster. Every moment Foster is on screen as the unpredictable Mike is electrifying, and the chemistry Pine and Foster create in their wounded, yet loyal brotherhood is undeniable. There is a bleak poetry to Davis’ script, as the men of this world reckon with the things they’ve done as lifelong warriors. Written by J.P. Davis, “The Contractor” paints a deeply cynical picture of life after service for American military heroes, having destroyed their bodies on the battlefield and left to fend for themselves and their families in an increasingly brutal world. When James lands in Berlin, “The Contractor” transforms from an American family drama into a Euro spy thriller.

All The Old Knives sees Chris and Thandiwe playing spies and ex-lovers reunited after nearly a decade.

Chris: "The dinner takes place over the stretch of the film, so it's about an hour and a half, and to go to work over two-to-three months, you're not diving into a scene that takes place on one day and then a scene that takes place on another — you have to pick up what's happening moment by moment, it's all about the nuance of the subtext. Thandiwe: "No matter how many times we worked on the script, no matter how many times we got to the end of the movie, we were always floored. We were incredibly lucky in that we had access to people who genuinely live this kind of life — I spoke to an incredible CIA operative, a woman of color who I felt allowed me to have a real portal into this kind of life, and she's just like, 'everybody has a huge tub of Tums on their desk'!" And as this story is happening, there's also a very intense love affair between Henry and Celia that's complicated for many reasons, one of which is that they worked together, and another is the whodunnit of this terrorist attack." Thandiwe: "Secrets! To have all the secrets — are you kidding?! Among the ex-coworkers he has to interrogate is Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton), who was also his lover at the time.

The Contractor Film Review: Chris Pine Enters the Hired-Gun Gig ... (TheWrap)

Nihilistic take on the struggles of veterans falls short of effective storytelling.

It’s easy to forget in the mess of the mission what the point of any of this is. In giving himself over to his work, he’s a husk of what he once was, his love for his family a tether but not a visible one. As James is reminded in a safe house in Germany: “It’s much easier to kill than to survive.” It’s a small thrill to see Pine and Foster reunite after their turn in “Hell or High Water,” and Saleh’s film is at its strongest when the two of them share the screen. Sutherland is a welcome presence, absent from the big screen for a minute, and the second he appears, it’s clear he’s the character with the most going on beneath the surface. This leaves James in the same place as many of his fellow soldiers: in debt, desperate, drug-addicted, and unfit for civilian life.

You have to work as a team and you have to work as basically the most highly trained, most adept gun operators in the world. It's a joy to work with people you dig and respect, and we're grownups who somehow haven't given up the makeup game — make it up — and it's really nice when you don't have to make up caring about somebody. What was different about the way you prepared for this versus some of the other big-screen action scenes you've been involved in? With he and I, it's what's best for the scene, what's going to work, what's going to make it pop, and whether that's him or me taking the lead, it doesn't really matter so long as it works for the film. It just so happens with Ben, I get the beauty of both worlds — Someone I like to spend time with who's also one of the finest actors out there. The pair sat down for an exclusive interview with Looper to discuss why they enjoy working together, the complexity behind the film's deceptively simple story, and the challenges of the movie's impressive stunts.

Pine: It reminded me of "A Spy Who Came in from the Cold," just in its simple, elegant complexity. What I learned from Patty is that she just has such confidence in letting her opinions be known and a collaborative spirit, in terms of getting what she wants done. You just try to make the other person feel as safe as you can. Motorcycle work can be scary because you're riding and you have to act (at the same time). And working in the woods was particularly difficult because it was dead winter in Romania, so it was absolutely blisteringly cold. Early in the interview with Kimmel, Pine mentions Quentin Tarantino’s love of Gwynne’s movies, something the director talked about ad nauseam with Pine’s mother (more on her in a minute) at a party recently. Not that we are surprised in any way (see previous sentence regarding our Chris rankings), but the chat itself revealed some unexpected trivia about the actor’s Hollywood lineage. Actor Chris Pine addresses whether or not he could return as his character Steve Trevor in director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot.

As far as Wonder Woman 3, however, Pine is less confident in seeing Steve Trevor return, giving a rather blunt response to the query, saying "I think poor Steve is dead, but I wish them all the best on the third one." Pine's Trevor was killed off at the end of Wonder Woman but reappeared in the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 when Diana was able to "wish" him back into existence for a short time. 'The Contractor' Review: The Pine Identity (The New York Times)

Chris Pine and Ben Foster team up to play mercenaries in a solid thriller about losing your faith and finding yourself in a violent reckoning.

In silence and in action, they show you the unfathomable loss that the rest of movie never coherently expresses. As more pieces click into place, the filmmakers heat up the story and the atmosphere, creating a mounting sense of unease. (Pine even mentions that franchise in this movie’s production notes.) He plays James, an Army Special Forces officer recovering from a serious injury that he suffered out in the field, and that has nearly ruined one of his knees. Written by J.P. Davis and directed by Tarik Saleh, “The Contractor” finds its genre groove once James signs up with the company. “The Contractor” has some serious things on its mind, notably James’s crisis of faith about service, nation and his military father’s legacy. What’s missing from his résumé is more work that’s sharp and distinctive enough to rise above the gray middle, the way that his 2016 western “ Hell or High Water” did.
