USMNT qualifies for World Cup: Don't let the loss to Costa Rica fool ... (CBSSports.com)

A 0-0 draw would be fine for both teams in truth, but the U.S. is clearly looking to find the opener. It's 0-0 at the break between the U.S. and Costa Rica. The Americans are nearly qualified for the 2022 World Cup, needing to just see out the remaining 45 minutes. It's Luca de la Torre, Cristian Roldan and James Sands warming up. So Adams is off for de la Torre, and that means Acosta shifts back to defensive midfield. It's Juan Pablo Vargas who puts home the opener, and Los Ticos take the lead. — U.S. Soccer MNT (@USMNT)— U.S. Soccer MNT (@USMNT) pic.twitter.com/PKw8e0ykLp March 31, 2022 I remember where I was when we failed to qualify for 2018. Never has the USMNT had this much talent, and never has a team this young worn these colors and pulled off what they did. Really qualification in 2022 is a continuation of a 2021 year which was really the time when this generation of players came into their own. "It's never easy to come down and play in these Concacaf countries. But, on the contrary, it has shown that the USMNT, in large part, is back. now the biggest stage in all of sports will once again include the red, white and blue, and with it will come the highest expectations this team has ever seen.

Has USA won the World Cup for men? List of USMNT results and ... (Sporting News)

The United States may have aspirations of one day becoming a top contender at the FIFA World Cup, but to do so it must build on a spotty history of results ...

Despite missing out on the 2018 tournament, the Americans are now regular World Cup participants. One of the big reasons the USA regularly failed to reach the marquee event was that Mexico stood in its way. That tournament featured the only knockout stage win for the U.S. ever, against CONCACAF rivals Mexico. However, that event only featured a four-team knockout bracket, meaning there was no Round of 16 or Quarterfinals. The Americans virtually locked up a spot by defeating Panama 5-1 in Orlando on the penultimate matchday. The history for the United States at soccer's greatest even is a spotty one.

Young USMNT ready to lay World Cup qualifying ghosts to rest vs ... (ESPN)

Since Gregg Berhalter was named the USMNT's head coach in 2018, everything he has done has built toward this moment. A spot at the World Cup awaits.

"We're here right now, and it's a great experience to do with my brothers." "It's amazing watching them grow, watching them make progress and see them here grow as a group and gain experience and what to do with the club," Berhalter said. I think it shows on the field and this team has crazy amount of swagger." Weah and Adams first started playing together in the U.S. youth national team system at the U13 level. That youth is why the team's performance since September has the potential to be less indicative of what to expect in Qatar than what we've seen from more established teams around the world. "I come in, I know the system. No team in the world played our-age team and they're doing a great job." "It's one of those things where I look back at it, and you say, 'Maybe we were a bit naive in a certain sense,'" Adams said. It has not lost a competitive game by six goals or more since 1957, a stretch that includes six World Cups, 16 qualifying cycles and several decades in which the sport existed in the country beyond the fringes of public consciousness. It quickly learned that winning games in those competitions on home soil doesn't compare with the rigors playing on the road in qualifying. At the same time, he was careful not to cast qualification as a foregone conclusion. Following the team's failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, trust with the country's broader sporting public was lost.

Pepi tested Navas from a tight angle and moved well in the penalty area, but struggled with a lack of consistent service. De la Torre consistently looked to get the ball forward, and completed an impressive 92% of his passes. He's consistently mature in how he shields the ball, and in the second half he became more influential as the US pushed for a goal. Adams took a knock early in the match and never quite recovered.

After its failure to reach the 2018 World Cup, the U.S. men's national team qualifies for the 2022 tournament in Qatar after losing to Costa Rica.

The World Cup is normally played in the summer. It will be the first World Cup played with 48 nations. The World Cup begins Nov. 21 and the final will be played Dec. 18. Costa Rica finished with the same record, but fell behind on goal differential. But due to the immense summer heat in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup is set to become the first to have not been played in May, June or July. The U.S. men's national team has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

USMNT 2022 World Cup Roster Projection 1.0: The Locks and ... (Sports Illustrated)

Now that the U.S. has qualified for the 2022 World Cup, who will be representing the nation in its return to the competition?

Slonina, 17, has been part of qualifying as a third goalkeeper and is a prime candidate to be the U.S.’s goalkeeper of the future (as long as he sticks with the U.S. and does not opt for Poland). Gómez, 18, made the jump to Real Sociedad from Louisville City in the USL and has Mexican eligibility. He may be a late addition to the nucleus, but his performances have been measured and steady, and he has the look of a player who belongs. As for Williamson, he was just carving out his role in the national team’s midfield when he tore his ACL soon after helping the U.S. win the Gold Cup. He just returned to action for the Timbers, and he has time to build his form back up to where it was. And would Berhalter entertain recruiting a relative outsider to his close-knit unit this close to the competition? There’s something to be said for World Cup experience, and few in the current U.S. picture have it. Given the lack of reliable center forwards, is there a way back for Altidore, the 32-year-old World Cup veteran who was called into Berhalter’s January camp in 2021 but hasn’t been back since? His ability to deliver on set pieces while providing depth at multiple positions—and a mastery of the dark arts—make him an invaluable asset. Turner will have an adjustment to make after his summer transfer to Arsenal, but he has been a reliable shot-stopper for the U.S. when given a chance. Injury reports, club form, club transfers and international allegiances all will play a part in Berhalter’s whittling down the pool to a final roster and a set of alternates. Steffen and Turner will both likely be Premier League backups at the time of the World Cup, which may continue to be a cause of consternation (for supporters, anyway), but that hasn’t stopped Steffen from being a regular for the national team when healthy. It’s not always fair to those who did the heavy lifting in qualifying, but fairness has little to do with a manager’s preference for the players he thinks can lift his team to its greatest heights on the biggest stage. That’s not to say it can’t happen at the World Cup, but the odds are not in the U.S.’s favor.

"Obviously after the last World Cup, it was tough for some guys," Reyna said. Get all of them healthy, give them seven-plus more months to prepare, and who knows what the USMNT will do? Despite an uninspiring performance and a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica, the U.S. men officially qualified for the World Cup on Wednesday night. After Juan Pablo Vargas headed in a corner kick in the 51st to give Costa Rica its first goal, the USMNT looked completely disjointed. Much will be made of the lackluster showing against Costa Rica, which didn't even play some of its key players for fear they'd pick up a second yellow card and miss the playoff. Missing a World Cup for the first time in 32 years defined the current group as much as it did the previous one.

USMNT Returns to World Cup After Qualifying for Qatar 2022 ... This time, there was no unthinkable capitulation for the U.S. men's national team with a World Cup ...

Costa Rica in Columbus and Christian Pulisic’s “Man in the Mirror” T-shirt celebration after his goal vs. Costa Rica, meanwhile, finishes fourth after coming on strong in the second half of the Octagonal and will go to a June intercontinental playoff against Oceania’s qualifying champion, New Zealand, in a match that will be held in Qatar. This was a qualifying slog unlike any other, due to the expanded final round and the compressed timeline on account of the pandemic. Fittingly, it came from a player nicknamed “El Tren” for the hype train that the 19-year-old striker has been driving since emerging as a talent in the FC Dallas system. There were some eerie similarities for the U.S. in the final stages of this qualifying campaign. Tim Weah also helped fill Reyna’s void with clutch contributions in the attacking third. There were iconic moments from the more heralded stars in the form of Sergiño Dest’s sensational goal vs. Yet new talents and heroes emerged to help fill the void. Antonee Robinson emerged as the answer to the years-old question at left back, even scoring a pair of vital goals along the way. Mexico in Cincinnati, where the legend of Dos-A-Cero was revived, and his hat trick vs. Berhalter still hasn’t had what most would consider to be his optimal lineup available for a single match—not during qualifying or any friendly or competition that preceded it. It was another four-goal win over Panama in Orlando over four years ago that put the U.S. on the precipice of qualification, only for an infamous loss to Trinidad & Tobago and a wild set of simultaneous circumstances elsewhere keeping the U.S. from competing in Russia. But Gregg Berhalter’s young side flipped the script, avoided the impossible scenario—it would’ve taken a loss by six goals or more in San José on Wednesday to finish out of the top three in Concacaf this time—and will indeed be taking part in the fall competition in Qatar.

“It's a learning experience, the way we handle everything is to reflect on it and to improve on it. And we got punished for it,” said Berhalter, who immediately set off for the airport to catch a flight to New York, and eventually on to Qatar for Friday’s World Cup draw. USMNT underwhelms vs. Costa Rica, but all eyes on World Cup ... (ESPN)

An underwhelming performance against Costa Rica's backup XI wasn't the optimism-inspiring send-off the U.S. wanted. But it is at the World Cup.

It could be the youngest team at the World Cup. "For us, it's about keeping things in perspective," Berhalter said. We had a job to finish and a job to accomplish, and we did that." "We'll play some European teams, South American teams, African and, hopefully, Asian teams and really get an understanding of what these different regions are bringing to the World Cup." "I think we have a hungry team. Now to be in this position and qualify for the World Cup, we're all extremely proud. And its underwhelming final performance against a bunch of Costa Rican backups wasn't exactly the optimism-inspiring sendoff it would have preferred. They earned the right, on the field, to go into the process as the de facto favorite to finish atop the standings. That victory didn't technically result in qualification, but because the U.S. only needed to lose by fewer than six goals against Costa Rica, the job was essentially done. We put ourselves in a position where we could afford to do that." We qualified for World Cup," he said. But a slow walk back to the locker room and a few words from coach Gregg Berhalter returned the team to reality: It had qualified for the World Cup. With 35,000 opposing fans so happy, it was instinctual to mirror their level of emotion in the opposite direction.

Julian Green, who scored the US’s most recent World Cup goal in the second-round loss to Belgium in 2014, has played 17 times in the Bundesliga this season and is still only 26 years old, yet has not featured under Berhalter. Also relevant is that the US under Berhalter have been a perpetual work in progress – a “process”, as he likes to say. Last September, when the US were 1-0 down to Honduras at half time (ultimately winning 4-1), having opened their campaign with draws against El Salvador and Canada, it was even tempting to wonder whether Berhalter might meet the same fate as Jurgen Klinsmann: ousted early in a stuttering qualifying campaign. Even as US Soccer adopted the slogan “Only Forward”, the caution and concern were palpable. In this qualifying cycle, humility and insecurity were byproducts of the shocking failure to make the 2018 tournament after seven successive appearances. Qualification has at times been couched not as the pursuit of a positive achievement but as an exercise in disaster prevention.

If that’s the case it’s Arriola who I suspect is the best bet, though Roldan and Morris (he can also play as a center forward) both have the versatility arguments. TB: If there’s talk bout a “break in case of emergency option” at center forward, you sure the roster is good in going with two natural center forwards, then? If he plays 2000 minutes and scores 15 goals for the Revs, could he get a look? Perhaps some players listed at CM (like Gianluca Busio) can play No. 6, but in reality, the coaching staff has only turned to Acosta over qualifying. The other obvious option is that Scally beats out one of Yedlin or Cannon, since he can back up either spot (that versatility factor again). In a roster of 23 players, four wingers might be enough, particularly given these are four of the most influential players on the roster to begin with. I fully expect Kellyn to be on the roster, but there’s a sliver of a window that could have someone sneak past him. MATTHEW DOYLE (MD): Here’s the argument against Kellyn being a lock: he doesn't play that spot for his club. There’s plenty of room for Sam Vines, DeJuan Jones or Kevin Paredes to make their move over the next six months. DeAndre Yedlin has been a regular in the group for WCQ, as has Reggie Cannon. It’s a shame they’ve been on the pitch together so sparingly (if at all), or we’d be talking about that core even more. Plus as you pointed out, they’ve got a ton of it at the highest levels for their clubs as well.

"But in the same sense, there was also this feeling that the public was on edge and they desperately wanted us to make it. "The games are a lot more controlled. Grading Berhalter and the USMNT World Cup qualifying campaign (MLSsoccer.com)

The US men's national team's primary goal this cycle – or at least in this part of this cycle – was to qualify for the FIFA 2022 World Cup.

Turning possession into penetration was a tougher climb, to the point that Berhalter even kind of scrapped The System (in part, anyway) for this final window. Instead, Sargent is now a low-usage defensive winger for one of the worst teams in the EPL. And even when Norwich go down to the Championship at the end of the year, Teemu Pukki’s expected to stay on, which means that Sargent will most likely continue to be a low-usage defensive winger at a lower level. Anyway, it’s starting to feel like we could see a reprise of the 2010 cycle, when Herc Gomez and Edson Buddle got hot in the six months leading up to the World Cup and played their way into the team. The US controlled the home game against Mexico and strangled them to death, and when they went on the road against that same El Tri side they were almost never under pressure. When that happens, you’re not the kings of anything. There has simply not been enough of that from the US, despite the fact that the US topped the Ocho in xG and xG differential, as per TruMedia via StatsPerform. This is the “Change the way the world views US soccer” segment, because this segment is about playing pretty, possession soccer. Walker Zimmerman, for example, was one of the four most valuable players of qualifying, and yet was not a factor at all in the first window. Some of this was forced by the injuries, suspensions and loss of form mentioned above. This goes hand-in-hand with the “rising talents” part of the project, but it’s not precisely the same thing. Through basically no fault of his own, Berhalter almost never got to see the entirety of his core group string some performances together and get on a roll. You could probably write the starting backline and midfield in pen at this point, which is great.

Faith-driven Pulisic, Zimmerman lead USMNT back to World Cup (sportsspectrum.com)

The USMNT is back in the World Cup thanks in large part to the contributions of Christian Pulisic and Walker Zimmerman.

“It really kind of changes the picture for me and helps you realize actually what a great sacrifice Jesus was on the cross when you think about God giving His only Son for us.” “[Playing for the national team has] always been the dream, and really, when you take a step back and realize you’re living out your dream, is something that’s really special,” Zimmerman said on the podcast. The tournament begins Nov. 21 and the final will be played on Dec. 18. The 28-year-old started nine of the team’s final 11 qualifiers and served as captain in two of them. And as Pulisic has headlined the U.S. attack, Nashville SC center back Walker Zimmerman has emerged as one of the U.S.’s most reliable defenders. But I’m really proud and can’t wait to go to the World Cup.” It was his hat trick against Panama on Sunday night that all but clinched a World Cup berth for the U.S. I don’t know how I would do any of this without that feeling that He’s watching over me and there’s a reason why I’m here.” @cpulisic_10joins @jennyachiuto discuss what it means to help the @USMNTqualify for the 2022 World Cup. pic.twitter.com/liloA9zmBS Following his transfer to Chelsea from German power Borussia Dortmund in 2019, Pulisic found himself alone in a new country. The U.S. men's national team secured the third and final automatic bid to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, edging out Costa Rica only on goal differential.

But the 2-0 score wasn't enough to rob the U.S. of what really matters: qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar. Costa Rica will play an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand in June for a spot in the World Cup. It pin-balled to the right post, where Contreras was waiting to capitalize. From a deep-lying free kick in the 59th minute, U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen failed to snag the ball out of the air, clashing into teammate Antonee Robinson instead. Each group cannot have more than one team from each nation, aside from Europe (UEFA), who was more qualified teams than any other region. The first 50 minutes of Wednesday's clash were scrappy, foul-filled and erratic from both sides.

After coming up short in 2018, USMNT returns to World Cup.

Barca, as is their station as the best women’s team in the world by several miles, thrashed Madrid 5-2 to take the quarterfinal tie by an aggregate of 8-3. And with a manager doing it for the first time as well, whatever your opinion of Gregg Berhalter is (and you can make a case for any one of them. That’s a good thing, and enough of a good thing to not worry about how the U.S. looked at the end of an oppressive qualifying process. And to do it in such a way that the last match is basically a dead rubber. Barca are an absolute joy to watch, and the epitome of what the Barcelona philosophy has been. There will be World Cup games come November, ones that you can justify ditching work for (you can always justify ditching work to drink, honestly). You can daydream about a surprising run, because they’re capable of it. The only player who’d been through it before that was foundational was Pulisic, and he’s still just 23. And the USMNT is on the good side of that. Sure, the U.S. basically returned to what it “should” be doing by qualifying out of CONCACAF. Remember how much 2018 sucked not having a rooting interest? There is no such thing as momentum when the next game the U.S. plays that really counts is over seven months away. It becomes harder to buy in fully after the disaster of Couva. It’s understandable, as we all spent so much time watching a team and program that was an utter mess and just twirling around before falling like a child you made do the spin-around-the-bat thing.
