The damage in Springdale was illuminated by the lights of first responder vehicles and flashlights as people went into the damaged structures to search for victims. Homes were damaged and vehicles flipped when a tornado-warned storm swept through the northwest Missouri town of St. Joseph Tuesday night. Local police confirmed to The Weather Channel that seven people were injured in Springdale as the severe storms hit the city. "At this time we can confirm George Elementary School in Springdale, Arkansas, was damaged by a potential tornado in the early morning of Wednesday, March 30," the statement read. This heightens the need to act quickly on a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning when it's issued. "Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building," an alert on the base's Twitter feed said. Several school districts across the South were sending kids home early or switching to remote classes Wednesday due to the severe weather. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris." "We have some damage in downtown Jackson," the dispatcher said. Out of an abundance of caution, Superintendent Steve Lanier, and school officials have canceled school for tomorrow due to an approaching storm," a message from Franklin County said. "And my grandbaby was sitting up in the bed smiling at me in between those trees." Tornado damage in St. Joseph, Missouri, from Tuesday night has been rated EF1.

Parts of the greater Memphis area are under a tornado warning Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.

Earlier in the day, the federal weather agency predicted how the storm would unfold. In north Mississippi, the Southaven Police Department posted on Twitter that a roof had collapsed on a warehouse. Temperatures will begin to drop Wednesday evening before reaching a projected low of 44 degrees. There were no indications of a tornado touchdown in Shelby County, said Brent Perkins with the county's Emergency Management and Homeland Security agency. "Our public works crews are not working anything," she wrote in a text message shortly after 6 p.m. "No reports of damage or down trees on their end." A storm system passed through the Memphis area on Wednesday afternoon, carrying heavy rain and prompting tornado warnings, but the county appeared to have avoided the worst of it.

Anticipating the storms through this evening, the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire region through 10 p.m.. “ ...

Even with shallower convective clouds (lacking significant lightning and thunder), we are concerned that downdrafts within the clouds may bring down blasts of strong wind in locally damaging gusts. With the influx of southern moisture and rising air, waves of showers will develop and transit our region through the afternoon and evening. Our concern shifts to the early evening, as the front nears and a pocket of unstable air develops just along it. A look at the day’s forecast map reveals that a warm front pushed through our region last night, ushering in wind from the south and a milder and humid air mass. While the instability may be somewhat lacking through a deep layer, the low-level wind fields are exceptionally strong and ideally configured such that any deeper cells may achieve rotation. If a severe thunderstorm (or tornado) warning is issued, it means a storm is imminent for your location and you should seek shelter immediately. The larger Severe Thunderstorm Warning covering DC, around the Beltway in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, and west into central Fairfax County is in effect until 9pm. This is Level 2 out of 5 on the severity threat scale. A possible tornado was located over Chantilly of Centreville at 8:21 p.m. and moving east. Although severe storms aren’t a sure thing, it would be wise to remain weather aware through late tonight. Still watching heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds moving through northern D.C., the north side of the Beltway, and along I-95 between D.C. and Baltimore. All this activity is moving east. Into this evening, we do expect to see showers and storms increase.

"These steel beams have come up completely on two of the posts," said Robert Wilson, a roofer. Large packs of water bottles and other debris were scattered around. "A window inside is broke down, outside, also." The storms may have produced a tornado in Tysons. The National Weather Service could assess the damage and video Friday to determine if there was a tornado.
