'Top Gun: Maverick' Trailer Reveals Tom Cruise Flying High in Long ... (Collider.com)

The newest trailer for Top Gun: Maverick shows Tom Cruise pushing the envelope after a 36-year wait.

"After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. The aviation action thriller sees the return of Cruise's Maverick, now a high-flying test pilot and instructor. Joining Cruise are the returning Val Kilmer as frenemy Iceman (who appears in the latest trailer in a blink-and-you-miss-it photo cameo) and new addition Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's late friend, Nick ("Goose," played in Top Gun by Anthony Edwards). With the introduction of Rooster, Maverick is forced into confronting his shaky past, along with his "deepest fears" — or so the official synopsis for the film suggests:

"Top Gun: Maverick" is the wildly anticipated sequel to the classic 1980s film. He has some help courtesy of Iceman, who's now a four-star admiral and Chief of Naval Operations. Outside of those two, the focus is on some new faces to help build out the "Top Gun" mythos. He may have fooled around with Charlie Blackwood (Kelly McGillis) in the original film, wooing one another to the tune of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away." This time around he's with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly), who's more connected to the original than you may initially think.

Top Gun: Maverick trailer sends Tom Cruise back in the air (Digital Trends)

More than 30 years after Top Gun, Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is back to teach the next generation of pilots before undertaking a dangerous mission.

Miles Teller will portray Goose’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, and it’s clear that he has no love for the man he blames for his father’s death. But at least one of the cadets will remind Maverick of his darkest hour, when his friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), was killed in the original movie. The trailer picks up with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) nearly 30 years after the original film.

The New Top Gun: Maverick Trailer Brings The Adrenaline Soaring ... (Game Rant)

Top Gun: Maverick just got a new mach-speed trailer, and excited viewers both new and old will have plenty to talk about with this one.

Top Gun: Maverick seems like it's continuing that tradition, using tons of practical effects and real fighter jets in action to pull off its heart-pumping flight shots. Whether through Cruise's penchant for trying to be as authentic as possible with his action scenes or due to the fantastic cinematography, the actual flying sequences in the trailer are an absolute thrill. Of course, after originally planning to release way back in 2020, Top Gun: Maverick has faced so many delays that it almost seems like the trip down memory lane is intentional to win back the good graces of fans. The trailer does a lot to really entice viewers both new and returning. Right from the get-go, it seems pretty clear that this trailer aims directly for that nostalgia nerve, bringing up plenty of familiar faces and those big fast planes everybody seems to like so much. Will it live up to the original?

New 'Top Gun' flyboy Glen Powell talks Netflix's 'Apollo 10 ½,' that ... (USA TODAY)

Glen Powell, the 'Top Gun' universe's newest flyboy, gets spacey with Netflix's “Apollo 10 ½' and geeks out over working with Tom Cruise.

And he captured that same thing in “ Boyhood.” There are these defining things to all of our childhoods that don't feel monumental but are part of the building blocks of what make our worldview and how we see and treat people. But he's righteous in his ability and his talent, and he's a good time. I'm so grateful that I got to do that with Jonathan. We are just brothers for life. I hope people take the time to do the work and come out a more three-dimensional, thoughtful person on the other side. Powell: I told him this feels like a nostalgia bomb of epic proportions. Everybody was just so excited to be out and getting dressed up and having normal maskless conversations and talking about movies.

“After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. If No Time to Die and Morbius are the leaders of the pack when it comes to delays, Joseph Kosinski’s sequel to Tony Scott’s ’80s classic is in a pretty close third place. Paramount dropped a brand-new trailer for the film on Tuesday, and it rocks pretty hard.

Top Gun 2 Trailer's Iceman Role Reveal Makes The First Movie Better (Screen Rant)

The new Top Gun: Maverick trailer reveals Iceman's (Val Kilmer) role in the sequel, making the original film from 1986 so much better in hindsight.

The marketing for Top Gun: Maverick has intentionally kept Kilmer's involvement a secret. But even Ed Harris, who plays his superior, is well aware that he is a gifted aviator, and it seems like he's well aware that Maverick has been sabotaging his own career for him to be stuck as a captain after all these years. Despite that, the pair reconciled their differences after Maverick refused to leave Iceman without a wingman during a crisis situation.

'Top Gun: Maverick's' latest trailer sets up a showdown - CNN (CNN)

We can thank the Iceman for the return of Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

In it, we learn that Val Kilmer's character is the one who requests Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise, of course) as teacher to a new group of pilots. In that group is Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (played by Miles Teller), who has a grudge against Mitchell because of his history with Bradshaw's father, Goose. which is intense to say the least.
