Dalton then signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Bears in March 2021. Dalton spent his first nine seasons as Cincinnati's starting quarterback after being drafted in the second round in 2011. "So me, as an overall leader, to have an impact on this team the way that I wanted to have an impact on this team ... it was short-lived. So I'm excited to get that opportunity to have the full reins, to have everything that I need. "I'm happy that I don't have to go into training camp with a question of whether I'm going to be leading this team or not," said Winston, who went 5-2 as New Orleans' starter last season before tearing the ACL in his left knee. The Saints have always held that philosophy of not wanting to waste Hill's talent on the sideline.

Dalton lined up under center in the Bears first two regular season games before a knee injury sidelined him in Week 3. That changed when Chicago traded up in the NFL draft to select former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Utility player Taysom Hill will forego most of his responsibilities under center and focus on playing tight end in 2022, according to New Orleans coach Dennis Allen.

The Bears signed Dalton last year thinking he was the answer to their quarterback trouble, but that didn't work out.

Shortly after signing Dalton, the Bears traded up to draft Justin Fields at No. 11 overall, then Nagy declared there would be no competition. Instead, he was a symbol of the teamโ€™s overall dysfunction and poor planning. The Saints are his third team in three seasons since the Bengals released him.

With Dalton taking all the offseason and preseason first-team snaps, Fields was ill-prepared for stepping in with a group of receivers he had little exposure to before Week 2 of the regular season. He suffered a bone bruise to a knee in the second quarter of Week 2 against Cincinnati with the Bears leading 7-0. When Dalton signed with the Bears, he got $10 million for one season, eight games and six starts.

Another interesting note is that since Dalton was released by the Bengals prior to the 2020 season, he has played his former team each season. Unfortunately, he and the team infamously never were able to get over that playoff hump. Andy Dalton will be joining the New Orleans Saints on a one-year contract after the team signed Jameis Winston to a two-year $28 million deal with $15 million guaranteed.
