But somebody, it seems, wanted to send a warning to those taking part in the peace talks. He reportedly met Mr Zelensky during the trip, but the Ukrainian leader was not affected and his spokesman had no information about the incident. Nobody else was affected by these very serious medical afflictions. The Kremlin has said Mr Abramovich played an early role in peace talks but the process was now in the hands of the two countries' negotiating teams. A source close to Mr Abramovich told the BBC he had now recovered and was continuing with negotiations to try and end the war in Ukraine. And later an official in the Ukrainian president's office, Ihor Zhovkva, told the BBC that while he hadn't spoken to Mr Abramovich, members of the Ukrainian delegation were "fine" and one had said the story was "false".

They said Abramovich and two Ukrainian peace negotiators suffered “red eyes, constant and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands,” symptoms consistent with chemical weapons poisoning, after a March 3 meeting. Russia denied that Abramovich was poisoned and that it had any links to the incident. They came to suspect that they were poisoned, an associate of Abramovich said Monday.

Abramovich suffered symptoms of suspected poisoning: Reports (Aljazeera.com)

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Ukrainian peace negotiators suffered symptoms of suspected poisoning, WSJ reports.

But with the civilian death toll mounting and Russia resorting to air raids and shelling attacks that are laying waste to large swaths of Ukrainian territory, diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering a ceasefire have intensified. Bellingcat can confirm that three members of the delegation attending the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia on the night of 3 to 4 March 2022 experienced symptoms consistent with poisoning with chemical weapons. Asked about the suspected poisoning, Ukrainian negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said “there is a lot of speculation, various conspiracy theories”. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the incident to the Reuters news agency but said Abramovich had not allowed it to stop him working. “Based on remote and on-site examinations, the experts concluded that the symptoms are most likely the result of international poisoning with an undefined chemical weapon,” the outlet said, adding that the move was most likely intended to “scare the victims as opposed to cause permanent damage”. A US official said intelligence suggested the sickening of Abramovich and Ukrainian peace negotiators was due to an environmental factor, not poisoning.
