Las Vegas and Death Valley soared to 93 and 104 degrees, setting March records.
By Monday and Tuesday, more-seasonal conditions are anticipated in the West as a zone of low pressure diving into California moves inland. As winds faded Saturday night, the blaze eased somewhat. Record highs in the 70s and 80s were predicted in eight western states from Arizona to western Texas. High temperatures were forecast to rise 20 to 30 degrees above normal from the Texas Panhandle through eastern Colorado, the western Dakotas and much of Wyoming and Montana. The fire came on the heels of the Marshall Fire near Boulder, Colorado’s most destructive on record, on Dec. 30. As of Sunday morning, the Boulder Office of Emergency Management reported that the fire had burned 189 acres and was 21 percent contained. The fire forced evacuations of a large zone near the research center and even extended into the south campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The evacuation areas included 19,000 people and 8,000 homes on Saturday evening.
The Boulder Police Department (BPD) said wireless emergency alerts have been sent to all cell phones within a quarter-mile radius of NCAR north of Denver.

We continue to reassess and make sure our perimeter is controlled, so we will start working on the outside of this thing and get the perimeter on it and then we start working our way in. We just need to continue to get the resources to the people and apparatus in the right places. Smith was optimistic looking ahead to the coming days. One key difference: aircraft were able to respond to the NCAR Fire on the first day. “[The snow] was one of the things that was on our side. With winds are blowing 15 to 25 mph, the small fire rapidly ballooned into a much larger one, and thousands of people were ordered to leave their homes.

Smoke might go into the city of Boulder tonight due to weather changes. Approximately 19,000 people and 8,000 homes are affected by the current evacuation area. More information for residents who have not yet been able to return home will likely become available this evening on the Boulder Office of Emergency Management’s website. Officials estimate the blaze grew to around 200 acres overnight, with 21% containment. “There will be smoke visible on this thing probably for the next week but I feel very good about the containment portion of this,” Smith said. Evacuees returning to their homes are encouraged to remain vigilant in the coming days, in case changing conditions prompt new evacuations. We’re happy to reinforce the point that we’ve lost no structures, that we’ve had no reportable injuries.”
