“It’s a blue-collar, lunch-pail kind of fight,” Mr. Weatherall said of the team’s competitive style. He held out his phone to show off his latest video interview with a network news host and then spoke of the tournament experience in general. “It’s priceless.” “And I’ve never, ever forgotten it.” “And then there’s Jersey City pride.” Student tickets to the game against Purdue, on sale for $10 each, sold out in under three minutes. Mr. Weatherall now runs Make-A-Wish New Jersey, a branch of the national nonprofit. JERSEY CITY, N.J. — In 1872, four years before construction began on the Statue of Liberty, St. Peter’s University welcomed its first class, all male and mainly sons of Irish immigrants. “This is Tyson getting knocked out by Buster Douglas.” “They represent determination and grit.” Most commute to and from the university every day. “It’s David versus Goliath.”

I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season, but whatever happens, Shaheen did what he promised to do, which is to build a good team and a solid foundation for men’s basketball here. But a lot of it requires a lot of hard work on the part of our team. It is going to be a joint effort to continue to project outward all the assets of the university — academics and athletics. We keep putting out things to our alumni, soliciting their support for our athletic program and for the university as a whole, and they are responding. We were No. 1 last weekend on Amazon for collegiate merchandise, and the traffic on our website was so great that it actually crashed for a half-hour last week. But happening at this moment in time, in this year, our sesquicentennial year — and the year we opened our new arena — is just remarkable. It’s easy to say the victories are going to be worth X number of dollars in both exposure and actual money. It was a dream of mine just to get past the first round. The only thing hotter than the Saint Peter’s men’s basketball team is the tickets to see it play. “We expect, based on what everybody’s telling me, that this is going to give us a big lift in terms of things such as enrollment and fundraising,” he said. After Saint Peter’s defeated both Kentucky and Murray State last weekend in Indianapolis in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the school has been the talk of the state and the sports world. And, yesterday, I got an email from someone in Japan that I don’t know who just wanted to congratulate the school.
