How's that for Madness? After Thursday's opening of the Sweet 16, just one No. 1 seed remains in the 2022 NCAA men's basketball tournament.
But Iowa State's defense has been equally impressive (holding third-seeded Wisconsin to 49 points on 29.8 percent shooting), and it can make things interesting if Izaiah Brockington, Tyrese Hunter and Gabe Kalscheur make shots. This might be the night's most intriguing matchup from a stylistic standpoint. The Bruins survived a scare from 13th-seeded Akron before thumping fifth-seeded Saint Mary's by 16 points. No. 4 UCLA vs. KenPom.com ranks Kansas fifth overall and Providence 32nd, while giving the Jayhawks big advantages in adjusted efficiency on offense (sixth to 31st) and defense (28th to 57th). It's the best of the Big 12 against the best of the Big East here, although the Friars need to play up a weight class or two. The Cinderella slipper has fit the Peacocks with ease so far, but their work only gets harder from here. No. 4 UCLA vs. The lone remaining No. 1 seed, Kansas, is one of eight teams in action Friday night when the tournament field will be shaved to just eight. After Thursday's opening of the Sweet 16, just one No. 1 seed remains in the 2022 NCAA men's basketball tournament. No. 4 UCLA vs. No. 1 Kansas vs.

- 1 Kansas799 Creighton72 - 1 Arizona605 Houston72 Playing aggressive defense, cutting off angles and stopping long outlet passes, the Hogs stunned Gonzaga, the tournament’s top overall seed. Duke, seeded No. 2, faced a real scare before eventually prevailing over third-seeded Texas Tech, 78-73, on Thursday night in San Francisco. The Blue Devils outscored the Red Raiders 12-5 in the last four minutes to give coach Mike Krzyzewski his 100th N.C.A.A. tournament win. “They’re not afraid of anybody, whether that’s U.A.B. or Illinois, Arizona, our next game Villanova,” Sampson said. In the second round, the Cougars limited Illinois to 34 percent shooting. And he has gotten here despite having five new starters. Villanova is 19-3 in its last six N.C.A.A. tournaments and won the championship in 2016 and 2018. We’ve got to rest up. We’re beat up. It’s March, so that must mean Coach Jay Wright and the No. 2-seeded Wildcats (29-7) are heating up at the right time. Duke and Villanova stand in their way.
On Saturday, two teams will reach the Final Four. Villanova takes on Houston at 6:09 p.m. and Duke faces Arkansas at 8:49 p.m. Both games are on TBS. The ...

Duke playing its best basketball, Kelvin Sampson's soaring stock and more to watch on Saturday in the Elite Eight.
Both Arkansas and Duke have the ability to play fast or play slow with the Razorbacks checking in as the fastest team in adjusted tempo (per KenPom.com) of the four teams in action on Saturday and Duke just behind them. Both Duke and Arkansas are good free throw shooting teams on the season -- both between 73% and 76% -- but have used better-than-average performances at the line to ice close games in this tournament. Houston lost two of its four best players to injury by the 13th game of the season ( Marcus Sasser, Tramon Mark) but now sits one win from the Final Four with 32 wins, the regular season and tournament titles in the American Athletic Conference and NCAA Tournament wins against the regular season champions from the Big Ten (Illinois) and Pac-12 (Arizona). If Sampson and the Cougars add Villanova, the Big East tournament champion, to that list, it's going to be hard to argue that anyone has had a better NCAA Tournament showing than Houston. Twice Duke has seen its season on the brink and faced the potential of ending Coach K's career with a loss, and twice it has elevated its intensity and efficiency to advance to the next round. In fact, at this point in the proceedings, there's a decent argument that Houston is the best team remaining in the tournament. But if you go talk to the coaching staffs at UAB, Illinois and Arizona, they will tell you this is not the 18th best team in the country. On the opposite end of the spectrum, not only among the four teams in action on Saturday but among all 358 Division I teams, is Villanova and Houston. The two rank No. 345 and No. 338, respectively, in adjusted tempo and will be more than happy to turn this Elite Eight showdown into a halfcourt affair to see who can execute at a higher level. The way the Blue Devils have closed out the last two games is the kind of basketball that shows why it has been mentioned all season that Krzyzewski might finish his Hall of Fame career in New Orleans at the Final Four. Michigan State's five-point lead late in the second half vanished when Duke locked in on defense and got huge shots from Trevor Keels and Jeremy Roach. The Blue Devils had another defensive twist for Texas Tech in the Sweet 16, but this time they paired it with an absurd 70.8% shooting after halftime. No. 1 seed Gonzaga figured to be here in the Elite Eight, perhaps even against No. 2 seed Duke in a rematch of their regular-season thriller. The Cougars beating Arizona wasn't as much of a surprise as Arkansas' victory, but it was unexpected to see a Wildcats team that had been so effective all year trail the entire game and lose by 12 points. The offense hasn't just relied on Paolo Banchero -- though he has been fantastic -- in these stretches, they've been able to run their sets and get really good looks that power efficient performances. The 2022 NCAA Tournament has featured a steady stream of shocking results that likely busted quite a few brackets and unbelievable storylines that have been almost too good to be true.
The Sporting News has everything you need to watch Saturday's Elite Eight games: Houston-Villanova and Arkansas-Duke.
TV TBD TBD TV TV TV Coach K is just one game away from a record 13th Final Four appearance, which would push him past the legendary John Wooden. The Blue Devils overcame disappointing finishes to the regular season and ACC Tournament (losses to North Carolina and Virginia Tech, respectively) and have come on strong at the right time. Houston, meanwhile, is looking for a second consecutive Final Four berth under coach Kelvin Sampson. The AAC champion Cougars have looked dominant during the tournament, beating 12-seed UAB 82-68; 4-seed Illinois 68-53; and 1-seed Arizona 72-60. Once again, Wright's Villanova team is in the thick of the NCAA Tournament. It has a chance to reach the coach's fourth Final Four overall and his third since 2016. These teams, champions of the Big East and AAC tournaments, respectively, will leave everything on the line for (at least) one more championship this year. Just a reminder: seeds mean nothing at this point of the tournament. That said, these teams have earned their way to this point of March Madness, not merely through name recognition.
The games Saturday and Sunday will air on TV via a combination of CBS and TBS. Meanwhile, fans can stream games via Sling on smart TVs and streaming devices.
The two themes that defined Holloway — loyalty and a pick-yourself-up-after-you’ve-been-knocked down mentality — proved irresistible to the collection of overlooked and under-recruited he drew to a tiny commuter school in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Peacocks, and especially their 45-year-old coach, know the feeling. Despite scoring just 17 first-half points and trailing by 13 early in the second half, the Friars roared back behind Noah Horchler, who hit a pair of 3-pointers to pull within 41-40 at the midway point. In the bargain, Kansas advanced to face No. 10 Miami, and also moved ahead of Kentucky for most wins in Division I history with 2,354. The Cyclones shot 32% in the second half, submarining their own cause further by turning the ball over 18 times. Love went 10 for 16 in the second. The Peacocks aren’t big, either, which means 6-foot-7 KC Ndefo, their best and most experienced player, often plays out of position. No. 2 Kentucky couldn’t, seventh-seeded Murray State didn’t, and by the end of their Sweet 16 matchup Friday, No. 3 Purdue was left grasping at air. fuboTV (CBS only) - Games are free to stream online via March Madness Live.
