Brooklyn's star point guard will reportedly be allowed to play in home games again, but his return doesn't make the Nets title contenders overnight.
The odds are that Cleveland stays put, hanging on to the sixth spot, while Toronto and Brooklyn square off in the play-in, with the winner heading straight into a first-round matchup with the East’s no. That’s really not a deep reservoir to be able to draw on when you’re in the guts of a must-win game against the kinds of really good opponents Brooklyn will have to beat to survive and advance. It would really, really be in the Nets’ best interest to ball out over these last couple of weeks to try to make sure they finish seventh rather than eighth, because that would mean the play-in game would be held in Brooklyn, where Irving will now be able to play, rather than Toronto, the one remaining NBA city where he still can’t. Maybe the Nets won’t need that sort of reserve; maybe the sheer talent of its two top stars, with some support provided by Patty Mills, Bruce Brown, and Co., will be enough. When they’ve played together this season, KD’s usage rate has dropped by nearly 6 points, and his true shooting percentage has soared to a ludicrous .673—the kind of bare-bones efficiency you typically see from screen-and-dive big men who have to finish only layups and dunks. The Nets enter Thursday’s action in eighth place in the East, 2.5 games behind the Raptors for the no. Defensive woes baked into the structure of most non-KD lineups mean those Kyrie-led groups have only broken even, but if Brooklyn destroys opponents with both stars on the floor and when Durant’s flying solo, just treading water when he sits ain’t half bad—and it’s a hell of a lot better than getting blitzed by nearly 12 points-per-100 with no stars on the court. He adds things that we’re thin at: penetration, shot creation, shooting, the spacing, and all those things he brings to the table.” And, in so doing, crucially, he eases the creative burden on Durant. Five months after his choice not to take the COVID-19 vaccine resulted in his banishment from Brooklyn, and nearly three months after hard roster realities prompted the Nets to reinstate him as a road dog, the still-unvaccinated Irving will be able to play home games again. Thus ends months and months of storm and stress for Brooklyn, which went from the odds-on title favorite to a play-in hopeful. He’s launching more than 10 3-pointers per 100 possessions and drilling nearly 44 percent of them—Steph/Klay/Ray territory—and shooting 91 percent from the foul line. He’s shooting just under 53 percent on 2-pointers, on one of the toughest diets of interior shots you’ll ever see from a guard.
Nets guard Kyrie Irving had been among the most high-profile people impacted by New York City's COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
He was able to re-join the team in January but only when they played out of town games. When New York lifted rules several weeks ago requiring a vaccine to dine in a restaurant, work out at a gym or attend a performance, Iving was allowed to watch the Nets’ home games but not play or enter the locker room. The city last month fired more than 1,400 workers who failed to comply with the vaccine mandate. “We have been suing the city for months over its arbitrary and capricious vaccine mandate — this is exactly what we are talking about. The city’s sweeping vaccine mandate for workers will still apply to people with other types of jobs, including private workers and government employees. “There can’t be one system for the elite and another for the essential workers of our city.

We waited until we were comfortable enough based on the medical team and we would continue to move forward with a very strategic plan of recovering our economy and looking at some of the unfair things that we saw." It was unfair to New Yorkers. It stated if you come to our city we're going to treat you differently than that we would treat New Yorkers. We are correcting that. "I said we have to wait," Adams said Thursday. "Two days is still 'wait.' I was not going to roll it out when I rolled out the other aspects. Adams repeatedly said that the city was simply adding New York-based athletes and performers to an existing carve-out: "This was a carve-out that the previous administration did. We have to wait until we're at a place where we're at a low area and we can reexamine some of the mandates.' We're here today." We applaud the Mayor for listening to the concerns of our New York teams, players, fans and communities and for leveling the playing field for home teams and their opponents."

The point of the mandate, at least as much as it was to protect those who’d have to interact with unvaccinated employees, was to compel members of the local community to become vaccinated, so that the local community could achieve and enjoy the benefits of herd immunity. Still another early version of the blog used the phrase “invisible hand-type batshittery” to describe the retreat and surrender that grips a community generations into a combined conservative and neoliberal assault on public institutions. Another early version of this blog wrestled with the word “mandatory” and the heavily compromised “mandates” that have half-heartedly tried and overwhelmingly failed to safely usher the public through this pandemic.

The conference ended in smiles when Irving, later asked about the potential "domino effect" of the policy change on the team, said that he "could not wait" to talk to reporters once an official announcement was made." We applaud the mayor for listening to the concerns of our New York teams, players, fans and communities and for leveling the playing field for home teams and their opponents." The mayor indicated on Tuesday that he would lift the mask mandates around April 4 in schools and day care settings for children from 2 to 4 years old, an age group that does not currently have a vaccine available, "if the numbers continue to show a low level of risk." We're doing it because the city has to function," Adams said at a news conference at the New York Mets' Citi Field. "This is about supporting our local vendors, our local stores ... and hearing those vendors on the ground ... saying how important it is (that) players attract people to the stadium," the mayor said.He also said he was doing it because the city was now a "low-risk (Covid-19) environment." If the mandate isn't necessary for famous people, then it's not necessary for the cops who are protecting our city in the middle of a crime crisis," said Patrick J. Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York. He added that the union has been "suing the city for months over its arbitrary and capricious vaccine mandate." If they finish anywhere from seventh to 10th, the Nets would be in a four-team play-in tournament to determine the clubs that would fill the conference's seventh and eighth playoff seeds. The Nets' final nine regular season games start with Saturday's contest at Miami, followed a day later at home against Charlotte.Irving said he's looking forward to speaking about it Reports of Adams' expected announcement on Wednesday served as a 30th birthday present for Irving, who on Wednesday night surged to 43 points in a loss on the road to the Memphis Grizzlies.Irving arrived at his postgame news conference requesting that no reporter quiz him on the mandate until an official announcement, but was subsequently left irritated as he was asked about it." The figure includes those who were hired following the mandates with the agreement of getting vaccinated, but ultimately chose not to.The mayor said he was not lobbied to make his decision." "If the rules are going to be suspended, particularly for people with influence, then the UFT and other city unions are ready to discuss how exceptions could be applied to city workers." The executive director of District Council 37, a union of public employees, said "thousands of city workers lost their jobs over the vaccine mandate." He also said was doing it out of fairness -- to put New York City-based performers "on a level playing field" with visiting performers." The decision has drawn discontent from unions of other types of workers, arguing either that the wider mandate isn't necessary or that people fired for not adhering to it should be reinstated.Adams said he expanded the exemption in part because the city's economy -- including vendors and businesses that surround the city's venues -- thrives best when all its stars attract people to those places. Silver publicly lobbied on Irving’s behalf for the first time in February, asserting during an ESPN interview that New York City’s vaccine mandate “doesn’t make sense” because it holds New York-based players to a different standard than visiting players. In New York City, 86 percent of the citywide population has received at least one vaccine dose and 78 percent is fully vaccinated. The pushback to New York’s regulations intensified when Irving was allowed to attend Nets games at Barclays Center as a fan under the revised guidelines but was still barred from playing. Barring a late-season rise in the standings, Brooklyn will need to work its way into the postseason through the play-in tournament, which begins April 12. Profile: Chiney Ogwumike is on a tireless quest to have it all. Adams has gradually rolled back the city’s regulations as coronavirus cases have dropped significantly since the peak of the omicron wave in December and January. Earlier this month, he lifted a vaccine mandate for citizens attending entertainment venues, eating indoors at restaurants and using fitness centers. “We support the Mayor’s determination that the old rules treating hometown and visiting players differently no longer made sense, particularly because unvaccinated NBA players will continue to test daily,” the statement read. The 30-year-old guard is averaging 28.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.5 assists, and he scored a career-high 60 points in a win over the Orlando Magic last week. Adams again encouraged Irving and all other New York athletes to get vaccinated and boosted, saying his feelings had not changed on that subject despite the exemption. Levine declined to give a specific number of players but thanked Adams for his move. Adams said the decision was not driven by external pressure but because of the desire to improve New York’s economy. "We were treating our performers differently because they lived and played for home teams?
The announcement Brooklyn Nets fans — as well as New York Mets and Yankee fans — have been waiting for became a reality Thursday morning. The Mayor of New ...
The announcement ends both months of speculation about the mandate and 48 hours of conflicting reports out of City Hall. On Tuesday, the mayor suggested that the Nets, Mets and Yankees and their fans would “have to wait” till the science supported any change. Bernadette Hogan, City Hall editor for the Post quoted Levine as saying a “small number” of Yankees hadn’t gotten the shot and Alderson claiming a “minority” of players were unvaxxed. John Abbamondi, CEO of Joe Tsai’s holding company, said earlier in the month that the Nets have been in “regular contact” with the city about the mandate. The Mayor described how New York is currently as a “low risk environment” for COVID-19, with a stable positivity rate under two percent on a 28-day rolling average and 13 hospitalizations a day on a seven-day rolling average, citing the latest public data. The Mayor explained how the so-called “carve-out” for professional athletes and performers based in New York City has been on his mind since he took office on January 1. Meanwhile, ticket prices on the open market for Irving’s home debut have soared. The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, officially lifted the private sector vaccination mandate for professional athletes and performers in local venues. Adams stated his medical professionals have re-evaluated the situation and said with NYC now in a different place than it has been, he decided to make to make the move. Shortly after Adams’ press conference concluded, the NBA and the NBPA [National Basketball Players Association] released a joint statement, supporting the Mayor’s decision. Kyrie Irving will now be able to play home games at Barclays Center, and so will unvaccinated New York Yankee and Met players in their respective home ballparks. This exemption has been putting our sports teams at a self-imposed competitive disadvantage, but this new order would help boost our economy.” “Today I sign an Emergency Executive Order 62, expanding the performance exemption to private employer mandates.
The Brooklyn Nets came up short in their 132-120 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Kyrie Irving among others shared their reactions:
In the fourth quarter, Memphis contained Brooklyn to just 16 points on shooting clips of 7-17 (41.2 percent) from the floor with six turnovers. There was a strong effort from the Nets in the third quarter to rally back. Memphis continued to pile on before halftime by posting a six-point scoring differential in the second period, which put Brooklyn behind by 14 points at the break.

1 1 The Blazers suffered a close loss to the Nets and beat the Pistons this week, while also being throttled by the Pacers and Spurs. Josh Hart only played in two of the games, but he averaged 25.5 points and 5.5 assists on 6-for-13 3-point shooting. The Magic split with the Thunder this week, while also picking up an impressive win over the Warriors and losing to the Pistons. Wendell Carter Jr. was great in the two games he played, both Magic wins, averaging 24.5 points and 12 rebounds on 70 percent shooting. The Spurs started off the week with a 33-point loss to the Pelicans, but bounced back for wins over the Warriors and Blazers. Dejounte Murray averaged 21 points, seven rebounds and 6.7 assists on 42 percent 3-point shooting, while Josh Richardson provided a nice boost in the two games he played, averaging 20 points on 6-for-16 3-point shooting. Russell Westbrook played the hero late in a surprising, overtime road win over the Raptors to start the Lakers' week, then LeBron James went off for a monster triple-double (and one of the best poster dunks of the year) in a win over his former Cavs. The Lakers also gave up a 16-point lead in a loss to the Wizards, then put up a valiant effort without James in a five-point loss to the 76ers on Wednesday. James averaged 37.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists this week as he passed Karl Malone for second on the NBA's all-time scoring list. The Pelicans beat the Spurs and Hawks to start the week, before failing to get a shot off in the final 8.9 seconds of a three-point loss to the Hornets. With Brandon Ingram still on the shelf, CJ McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas did the heavy lifting on offense, each averaging more than 20 points per game. The Knicks beat the Wizards and Hornets this week, while losing to the Jazz and Hawks (New York will be happy it doesn't have to see Trae Young again this season). With a postseason berth slipping away, the focus turns to RJ Barrett, who kept up his strong year with 25.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this week, albeit on poor shooting from the field. Bogdan Bogdanovic averaged 31 points in the wins this week, and 17 points in the losses. The Jazz started the week with wins over the Clippers and Knicks before losing to the Nets and being run off the floor by the Celtics. Donovan Mitchell averaged 34.3 points on 39 percent 3-point shooting in three games this week, while Jordan Clarkson added 18 points per game on 35 percent 3-point shooting. Prior to the news, Brooklyn beat the Blazers and picked up an impressive win over the Jazz without Irving before losing to the Ja Morant-less Grizzlies on national TV on Wednesday. Irving scored 43 points on 6-of-11 3-point shooting in the loss, while Kevin Durant averaged 36.7 points per game for the week on 58/41/96 shooting splits. Devin Booker averaged 29 points and five assists for the week on 52 percent shooting, while Deandre Ayton added 22.3 points and 12 rebounds per game on 68 percent shooting.
Although it's been a dramatic season for the Brooklyn Nets, especially regarding Kyrie Irving, there is some optimism for Ben Simmons' debut.
A team whose favored to win the East as is maybe returning a third All-Star? As if Jimmy Butler’s Heat didn’t already have enough to fight about. The fact that Irving is now back full time could be big here too. As Shams notes, Simmons is now in many ways the perfect fit for this team. I think they’re gonna be cautious with it, but there’s an expectation on the Nets that Ben Simmons will play this year. He dealt with a nerve impingement in the area back in 2020. Ben Simmons is literally exactly what the Nets need.

Despite all that’s happened since 2020, when the world that we once knew changed forever, and as things are starting to feel “normal” again, we’ve arrived at a moment in which Kyrie Irving has sadly become proof that unwillingness can “win.” At some point, another virus or outbreak will happen down the line — it’s inevitable. The league that was once an example of how to do things, has been bested by one of its biggest stars in a test of will. Adams used Irving’s situation, and anything else he could, to make himself appear more appealing to the public. It was a certificate of selfishness. But in this case, it wasn’t a badge of honor. Anybody that’s reading this who didn’t take the vaccine — besides the ones that couldn’t due to pre-existing conditions — is reckless.

The Nets were looking play-in bound, but getting Kyrie for the final 9 games of the season may be crucial in giving them a final push to get over the top. That issue caused James Harden to get out of dodge, but Durant stayed firm in his support of Kyrie. This means Irving can finally start playing games in the Barclays Center again.

With today's announcement, we support the Mayor's determination that the old rules treating hometown and visiting players differently no longer made sense, particularly because unvaccinated NBA players will continue to test daily.
