A committee spokesperson declined to comment on the content of the texts. In the same interview, Thomas acknowledged that she attended Trump's rally at the Ellipse on Jan. 6, 2021, but said she left before he spoke. NBC News has not reviewed the messages. “Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me, and I don’t involve him in my work,” she said. Ginni Thomas, Justice Clarence Thomas' wife, exchanged texts with Mark Meadows about efforts to overturn the 2020 election (unknown)

CBS News and The Washington Post have obtained copies of numerous text messages exchanged between Thomas and Trump's White House chief of staff.

Among Thomas' stated goals in the messages was for lawyer Sidney Powell, who promoted incendiary and unsupported claims about the election, to become "the lead and the face" of Trump's legal team. Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist married to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in urgent text exchanges in the critical weeks following the vote, according to copies of the messages obtained by CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa and Bob Woodward of The Washington Post. Those messages — part of 29 total messages obtained — reveal an extraordinary pipeline between Virginia Thomas, who goes by Ginni, and then-President Donald Trump's top aide during a period when Trump and his allies were vowing to go to the Supreme Court in an effort to subvert the election results.

Ginni Thomas Pressed Trump’s Chief of Staff to Overturn 2020 Vote, Texts Show (unknown)

In the weeks between the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas ...

That same day, Ms. Thomas urged Mr. Meadows to support Ms. Powell, and said she had also reached out to “Jared” to do the same: “Just forwarded to yr gmail an email I sent Jared this am,” she wrote. “He must recuse himself, and should have recused himself in the cases that have been heard up to now.” While Ms. Thomas already had access to the president, White House aides said her influence increased after Mr. Trump named Mr. Meadows chief of staff in March 2020. He once said his wife worked “24/7 every day in defense of liberty,” adding, “We are equally yoked, and we love being with each other because we love the same things.” Others challenging the committee’s subpoenas in court include John Eastman, a conservative lawyer and former clerk to Justice Thomas who wrote a memo arguing that Mr. Pence had the power to reject Electoral College votes for President Biden. Both cases could end up before the Supreme Court. The text traffic also suggests that Ms. Thomas was in contact with Jared Kushner, the former president’s son-in-law and adviser. Many of Ms. Thomas’s postelection texts are rambling, with little attention to punctuation, and they run the gamut. Ms. Thomas has actively opposed the Jan. 6 committee and its work, co-signing a letter in December calling for House Republicans to expel Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger from their conference for joining the committee. The committee obtained 29 texts between Ms. Thomas and Mr. Meadows — 28 exchanged between Nov. 4 and Nov. 24, and one written on Jan. 10. The contents of the texts were reported earlier by The Washington Post and CBS News. They were among about 9,000 pages of documents that Mr. Meadows turned over to the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. In February 2021, he wrote a dissent after the majority declined to hear a case filed by Pennsylvania Republicans that sought to disqualify certain mail-in ballots. Justice Thomas has been Mr. Trump’s most stalwart defender on the court.

Other messages refer to conservative commentators and lawyers who supported Trump’s cause, including Sidney Powell, whom Thomas apparently wanted to be “the lead and the face” of Trump’s legal team. Thomas did not respond to the newspaper’s requests for comment. Thomas, for instance, highlighted a claim popular among QAnon followers that the president had watermarked certain ballots as a means of identifying fraud. Earlier this month, Ginni Thomas told The Washington Free Beacon, “Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me, and I don’t involve him in my work.” But her involvement in the post-election challenge, including her attendance at the January 6th rally that preceded the siege on the Capitol, has put new scrutiny on when Supreme Court justices should recuse themselves from certain cases. Powell, though, made a series of wild and unsupported claims in multiple TV appearances and at a November 19 news conference, to the point that Fox News’ Tucker Carlson told viewers that, after his inquiries, she could not produce evidence.
