Which states and performers did the best on the debut episode of "American Song Contest" show? Hint: Connecticut and Michael Bolton nailed it.

Hueston’s emotional ballad “Held On Too Long” is exactly the type of tune that fans of “American Idol”-style shows eat up. Lamb describes her sound as a “mixture of Blake Shelton and Avril Lavigne,” but her voice is better than either of those artists. Then she came out and delivered “Wonderland,” an OK K-pop track accompanied by slightly better dance choreography. The production work, however, somehow managed to scream both over-the-top and amateur at the same time. The performances ran the gamut, from forgettable to fabulous. The series is set to run 8 p.m. Mondays through May 9.

A Mississippi native and Grammy nominee took the stage Monday to represent the Magnolia State on the NBC show “American Song Contest.”

The Grammy-nominated artist is also featured on producer Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Special” album. I’m gonna put that in the song.’” “I am here to bring the funk, bring the blues, and bring the soul and make sure you feel good.”

Musical performers from all 50 states, five major U.S. territories and Washington D.C. will seek to captivate the nation as they showcase their talents on.

How Atlantic Records Plans to Promote 56 Songs From ‘American Song Contest’ (unknown)

Billboard spoke with Atlantic Records president, West Coast, Kevin Weaver about the label's involvement with the competition and plans for the season. Related.

The hope is that we break a bunch of artists by way of the show and the fact that we’re in business with them and we’re their partners from inception would lead me to believe that we’re going to be in it for the long haul. As much as I have a sense of what I think could be big records from the show, I wouldn’t be shocked if some records happen that were not those records as well. I’m excited about these legacy artists and their releases and super interested to see how this all works on the show and how the legacy artists’ performances are in comparison to the developing artists. We’ll know what’s reacting on TikTok. And just like any other record here to a large extent, we will move quickly based on how records are talking to us as they get in the marketplace. It’s awesome to be back in it with her and putting out music together. A lot of hands on, a lot of rolling up our sleeves and everybody was definitely in the trenches together. I was able to figure out how to make it work with virtually everybody regardless of what their specific situation was. That was a minority of folks and then a ton of people wanted the benefit of what we offered as far as helping them get records recorded, finding songs, getting records mixed, the whole process of making records as great as we could make them, and it was really fun to be in it like that on many songs. On our A&R team, a couple folks in particular: Pete Ganbarg, who’s our president of A&R. Pete was in the trenches with me. And then we gave them the opportunity to access our A&R services. So we were super involved with that, and there was a lot of input, feedback and dialogue back and forth between us and the network and the producers of the show. Audrey and I have done a ton of stuff together and we started talking about it and we got really excited about it.

What you missed on ‘American Song Contest,’ our country’s chaotic new take on Eurovision (unknown)

(Though Starr did slightly upstage this during “Fire,” when her band member’s guitar literally shot fire.)At least one artist will be primed to go viral every weekSo, back to “New Boot Goofin’,” a country-rap situation courtesy of Wyoming’s Ryan Charles. Though that phrase may sound familiar thanks to “Reno 911!,” Charles explained that the song is based on “the confidence you have getting a new pair of boots” — because in Wyoming, boots bring your whole outfit together. What you missed on ‘American Song Contest,’ our country’s chaotic new take on EurovisionRyan Charles of Wyoming performs on the series premiere of “American Song Contest.” (Trae Patton/NBC) If you didn’t catch Monday night’s series premiere of NBC’s “American Song Contest,” hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg, we have three words to sum up what you missed: “New Boot Goofin’.”It’s true: Depending on how things go on “American Song Contest” — the U. S. version of the Eurovision Song Contest — in which contestants from each state compete to win the prize for best original hit, Wyoming’s entry “New Boot Goofin’” could be the song of the summer. (According to Variety, jury rankings will also contribute to those three choices.) Eventually, after a semifinal round, 10 acts will compete in the finale on May 9.During the premiere, the first act sent to the semifinals by the jury was Hueston, an indie-alternative singer from Rhode Island who described himself as a mix of Chris Stapleton and Adele and “Sons of Anarchy” (“but in a good way”) and delivered a very emotional backstory about growing up in poverty before offering up a ballad called “Held on Too Long.”There’s a mix of very famous and non-famous namesLike Eurovision, the competitors range from stars with inescapable hits (Jewel, Sisqó, Macy Gray) to names you would recognize only if you watched “The Voice” (Jordan Smith) to lesser-known local acts. The biggest star power on Monday came courtesy of Connecticut’s Michael Bolton, who grew up in New Haven and raised his kids in Westport. (“He’s the heart of the entire state,” one local venue owner explained.) Bolton, who boasted quite a bit about the state’s pizza, went with a classic Bolton ballad called “Beautiful World,” which he said was about kindness: “Something the world really needs,” he added before belting out the song, accompanied by a gospel choir.Breakout K-pop singer AleXa also captivated the audience with an elaborate set covered in ribbons for “Wonderland.” She acknowledged that because she came from Oklahoma (her mother is from South Korea and her father is from New York, and they met in Tulsa), people probably expected her to break out a guitar and sing a country ballad. For the first five weeks, around 11 acts will perform during each episode — and at the end of the night, a jury (made up of 56 “titans of the music world,” Clarkson said, representing each state and territory) chooses its favorite act to go to the next round. While she does enjoy country music, she said, she discovered K-pop in high school and started releasing music several years ago –— she now performs to big crowds in South Korea.“K-pop is my guilty pleasure!” Snoop Dogg exclaimed after AleXa’s performance. “And now it’s our turn, y’all.”“American Song Contest” will have 56 performers, with one artist from each state, as well as five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Eleven of them performed Monday — here’s what to know from the mildly chaotic two-hour premiere:Audiences and a professional ‘jury’ will vote for the winnersUnlike other American singing competitions, this isn’t just audience participation.

Michael Bolton kicks off premiere with 'silky smooth' vocals, wows Kelly Clarkson (unknown)

The premiere of NBC's "American Song Contest" included an eclectic mix of musical performances, including one from pop icon Michael Bolton.

"The Rhode Island I came from … was a lot rougher. "I know he’s looking down on me and proud of his son." "I think that is a hit record right there," Snoop Dogg added. "You get a lot of love here in Indiana. It’s real close-knit," Skywalkin said. "What a way to kick off the show," Clarkson said. "That voice is so silky smooth," Clarkson gushed after his performance, clutching a Michael Bolton t-shirt in her hands.

American Idol (0.7, 5.15M) and the return of 9-1-1 on Fox (0.7, 5.11M) were nearly neck-and-neck in both measures and tied as the night’s highest-rated programs. Minnesota's Yam Haus 'Ready to Go' against the competition (unknown)

The band will be seen competing on NBC's 'American Song Contest' against other music artists to win the title of 'Best Original Song' in the US.

Yam Haus sure does seem like the perfect fit to represent  the North Star state. The phrase is something the four cooked up from their shared ideology of being kind and welcoming to all. Fortunately, their collective diligence transformed this skepticism into eagerness and excitement to put up a brilliant show. The band will be seen competing on NBC's 'American Song Contest' against other music artists to win the title of 'Best Original Song' in the US. The band started in 2017 in Minneapolis, when Zach, Lars, and Seth met in high school. Seth, Jake, and Zach, quit their jobs to finally kickstart what was once a dream.

You can catch episodes the following day on NBC.com, Peacock and Hulu, according to TVguide.com. A similar pattern is followed for the semifinal round.“We all know the modern hits, but so few of us ever get to witness them actually becoming legendary songs,” Isaac Slade, the former member of The Fray who is representing Colorado on the jury, told Variety. “‘American Song Contest’ will give people a front row seat to that moment when those timeless songs first catch fire, right in front of their eyes.“ A combination of public and jury votes determines who moves on in the competition, according to Variety. The jury features 56 people —  one representing each U.S. state and territory — who are involved in the music industry, including songwriters, radio programmers and members of the Recording Academy. At the end of each Qualifying round, the jury immediately advances one artist to the semifinals, considering factors like “artistic expression, hit potential, originality and visual impression,” Variety reported.Viewers then get the chance to weigh in by voting for their favorite songs the following three ways: online at nbc.com/ascvote, through the NBC App and via TikTok, according to Variety.During each week of the Qualifying round, the voting window is open from Monday night to Wednesday morning, Variety reported. Kelly continued: “’Cause they only want to hang out with you for so long and that’s now so I gotta take advantage of that … I’m excited to have more time with them. 'American Song Contest' Recap: Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Dogg Host Electrifying Premiere (unknown)

American Song Contest - Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg hosted 'American Song Contest's first 11 contestants during premiere episode.

Hueston representing Rhode Island is the first performer to move on into the American Song Contest semi finals. On the stage, she sang “Wonderland.” I think she put on one of the best performances of the night in relation to visuals, choreography, and background dancers. Fans can listen to the original songs from tonight’s show on whatever streaming service they use. Alisabeth was the embodiment of her inspirations, Lady Gaga and Pat Benatar when she performed her power anthem “Wonder.” The Wyoming based singer takes pride in the fact that his look is far different from his cowboy western rap sound. He took to the stage singing a brand new song called “Beautiful World.” The 69 year old singer showed that he still has a strong voice. Jake’O represents Wisconsin on American Song Contest. I was taken aback by Jake’O’s resemblance to Elvis Presley. His song “Feel Your Love” is described as nuvo retro. UG Skywalkin’s father wanted him to live the American dream before he passed away, which is why this singer is representing Indiana. He’s been doing music for 10 years in all genres, but he’ll be performing rap in the TV series. They were energetic on the stage and really got the audience going. Michael Bolton is representing Connecticut in the national competition. Clarkson began by reminding audience that this is the only original song talent show on air, while Snoop Dogg promised Grammy level performances. It seems like this format will be kept throughout the entirety of the competition.
