Texas basketball falls to Purdue thanks to 46 free-throw attempts (Hook 'Em Headlines)

Purdue will now be moving on to face the Cinderella 15-seed St. Peters in the Sweet 16. Purdue was also just the third team to get to the line at least 46 times in one NCAA Tournament game since 2010. Thus, Purdue got to the free-throw line at a near record-breaking volume in this game. There was a stretch of this game at one point in the first half where Texas went more than nine minutes without making a single field-goal attempt. Texas got big outings from the likes of redshirt senior shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones and senior guard Marcus Carr en route to an unfortunate 81-71 loss to the Boilermakers on this night. In a game where first-year head coach Chris Beard really saw the six-seed Texas basketball leave it all out on the floor, the Longhorn faithful should be proud of this team.

Texas G Brock Cunningham posts farewell message (Burnt Orange Nation)

After four years in burnt orange and white, it appears that the local product is moving on from basketball.

Cunningham’s minute per game dropped to 11.7 this season, but he improved his efficiency across the board, shooting 48.2 percent from the field, a boost of 21.1 percent, hitting 47.8 percent from three, up 22.8 percent, and making 81.3 percent of his free throws, 25.7 percent better. Thank you to the team, the fans, and everyone in between. He also posted career highs in offensive rebounds (31), assists (22), and steals (24) while also fouling at a much more efficient rate — he drew foul calls at a rate of 7.2 per 40 minutes while averaging 2.1 fouls per game with six disqualifications. As a redshirt sophomore, Cunningham ranked fourth on the team in assists with 21 and offensive rebounds with 29, and fifth in steals with 21 while averaging 15.2 minutes per contest. I’m sorry for the confusion. I will return to play at texas while I finish a masters program.— Brock Cunningham (@Brockolli13) #sorry #hookem #texas March 22, 2022

Four takeaways from Texas basketball's NCAA Tournament loss to ... (Austin American-Statesman)

The Longhorns came in undersized against the 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, but they didn't count on every little bump, push and shove getting called, either.

Jase Febres missed a 3-pointer from the right corner, Timmy Allen missed his customary 15-foot elbow jumper and Jones got called for an offensive foul before his shot. On the other end, Timmy Allen found himself under the basket and was looking up at Edey. Normally, Allen would just go straight up for a layup attempt and draw a foul. Bishop tied the game at 52-52 with a strong reverse layup. Williams had a team-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the first half while Edey had seven points in almost eight minutes. Brock Cunningham missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key, Carr missed a long shot and Ramey couldn’t finish a run-out layup after a steal. Allen dribbled the ball out from under the basket and set up the offense. Then, Jones got a run-out chance after a steal and slammed it home. Bishop was caught fronting him once in a one-on-one situation, and the Boilers just lobbed it over Bishop’s head. Bishop had a little trouble on the other end, though. On the game’s first possession, Beard shouted for his players to have “High hands!” and Christian Bishop opened by blocking Edey. The Longhorns came in undersized against the 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, but they didn’t count on every little bump, push and shove getting called, either. The Boilermakers got 46 free throw attempts and made 33.

No. 6 Texas falls short against No. 3 Purdue in 81-71 loss (Burnt Orange Nation)

The Longhorns battled until the final whistle, but couldn't overcome a huge disparity in free throws, a big day from Trevion Williams, and a dagger from ...

Jones and Carr helped the Longhorns quickly overcome the halftime deficit as the game settled into a back-and-forth contest for much of the second half. Texas got off to a quick start offensively, hitting 5-of-6 shots before the under-16 timeout and making three of the first four attempts from beyond the arc. Senior guard Jase Febres proceeded to hit one from beyond the arc, too, giving Texas a 9-1 run. Ivey’s three, which came after shaking the tenacious defense of Texas guard Courtney Ramey, who helped hold the Purdue star without a field-goal attempt in the first half, splashed through the net as the Boilermakers led by three points against a Longhorns team that refused to go away. Head coach Chris Beard’s team was whistled for 29 fouls, 13 more than Purdue, and only shot 12 free throws compared to 46 for the Boilermakers, who finished with a 23-point advantage from the line. Purdue had led by 10 points with 2:29 left before Texas senior guard Jase Febres hit a three and was fouled, converting the four-point play at the line.
