Purdue men's basketball defeated Texas 81-71 in the NCAA Tournament East Region's Round of 32 Sunday Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
"Yeah, I think you're going to have some regions that have been that way before and then you have some regions where it just goes status quo and the top seeds win. So we were just trying to crowd him the best we could and try to get him off his right hand because when he gets to his right, he's a lot better as a passer and he's a lot better as a scorer going right, in my opinion. But I also think we have a good system for them and our guys do a good job of delivering the basketball." But with that being said, if you're going to take somebody out like that and give them that much attention and then you're going to throw the ball into the post, you're going to have some space to play and you're not going to be great in rotations at that time. We had a lot of dribble-in passes to the post and then just tried to play from there. And, you know, obviously we're happy to be in the Sweet 16, but, you know, we've got to win the game." You've just got to stay focused on the main goal and I felt like I did that." So I think we can definitely draw on that experience knowing we're going to need our best basketball not just in that game but from here on out if we want to go where we want to go." So you've just got to be prepared and you've got to be locked in. "But at the end of the day it's a credit to my teammates and stuff, these two guys on the stage with me and everyone else made my job so much easier, along with the coaches. I think everybody's been through it and they knew what was on the line, they knew what it meant to our seniors. We felt like we had an advantage on the interior and we really wanted to go inside, but we also wanted to open some things up and try to get Jaden in the open court, try to get him in ball screen action and just make the right reads.

I didn’t watch the away games at Indiana and Iowa at all because I was such a mess, and after the first three losses of the season I didn’t even sleep. I am sure it was a release in different ways for many of you all. I already struggle with mental health issues, but in working with my therapist she said that the PTSD of that even manifested itself in me watching Purdue games because my brain associated the accident with Purdue because we were driving home from a game at the time. We were hit from behind as the driver of an SUV slammed into the car behind us, knocking it into us, then us into the car in front of us. This was the type of game we have lost so many times in the past. Thankfully, I have been able to work through the worst of it thanks to a wonderful therapist, and last night was a tremendous release. He beat the Buckeyes at the buzzer again this year in Mackey Arena. That was the regular season though. Sure, the first few views looked like it was off of Texas, but the longer the official stood at the monitor the more it felt like it was going to be Texas ball, and Carr was going to break our hearts again like he did last year in Minneapolis. I know I was not the only Purdue fan turning that over in my head, and each second the review went on felt like days. Why wasn’t he going to the basket where he could at least get to the line. A furious rally saw the Longhorns benefit from a rare four point play, a dunk, and a long three pointer from Marcus Carr to cut it to three. With 1:10 left last night, as Purdue was clinging to a three point lead against Texas, Eric Hunter Jr. had the ball when he dribbled towards the Purdue bench and got into trouble. As he fell out of bounds both Bishop and Jones reached in to knock the ball loose.
Purdue outlasted Texas 81-71 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game Sunday night.
“This culture’s strong, the coaching staff is strong, and players just got to come along with it and trust it,” Jones said. It was tied when Ivey drove and passed to Hunter, who sank a 3-pointer from in front of Purdue’s bench with 9:17 left. “Ramey’s one of the best defenders in the country,” Beard said. 46-12, there hasn’t been a lot of games in the NCAA Tournament like that.” That started a 7-0 run to end the game as Purdue outlasted Texas 81-71 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game Sunday night. “All game he was chirping, just trying to get me out of rhythm,” Ivey said.
Purdue basketball defeated Texas 81-71 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Here's everything coach Matt Painter had to say during the postgame press ...
If they want to come and double on you, they want to give you a lot of attention, now move the basketball, but when they stay one-on-one, like be aggressive and go and score. Like sometimes he's a pass-first player and you can't be a pass-first player when you're one-on-one. So like that's -- you see highlights, you see things and people say what do you think of this, then when you don't have a good, you know, comment, people look at you like you're crazy. And you said he's being more patient, but for him to look to get his offense, instead of maybe being too much of a facilitator, has that been an emphasis? So we were just trying to crowd him the best we could and try to get him off his right hand because when he gets to his right, he's a lot better as a passer and he's a lot better as a scorer going right, in my opinion. But I also think we have a good system for them and our guys do a good job of delivering the basketball. They deny passes, they disrupt, but if we can get the ball where we want and they're out-denying everybody, then we're going to be one on one at the block. So if you want to stay one on one and you can defend us, then that really helps you, but if you can't defend us and you're going to draw fouls, we're obviously going to really get into your bench like we did today. We had a lot of dribble-in passes to the post and then just tried to play from there. We felt like we had an advantage on the interior and we really wanted to go inside, but we also wanted to open some things up and try to get Jaden in the open court, try to get him in ball screen action and just make the right reads. I don't care who we play and how they handle it, we try to throw the ball inside, but we also don't -- we try to have some balance and run some things for some other guys for shots or we try to get the ball in Jaden's hand as much as we can when it doesn't go into the post. So as long as we stay around 8 to 12 we've had a lot of success this year and we kept it at 12.
