The Ohio State basketball team tried to mount a comeback against Villanova, but it fell short. The Buckeyes lost to the Wildcats 71-61.
Malaki Branham got hot in the second half and finished with 23 points. Villanova was probably the better team, but coaching errors early in the game kept Ohio State from having a chance to win. Even though they made a run late in the second half, it wasn’t enough.
It needs to be more balanced than what we had, and we will (be)," Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said.
No matter how hard the Buckeyes played in games against Purdue, Villanova and a second game versus Wisconsin on the road, they didn’t have enough to close the talent gap between them. But the others need to be just as capable when called upon to keep things from being top-heavy. “The injuries played a major role,” Holtmann said. Given the talent infusion coming this summer, that shouldn’t be a problem any longer. Ohio State may have had the best two players on the floor, and both E. J. Liddell and Malaki Branham played like it. But Sueing played in two games, never looking like himself, while Towns missed the whole season. Ohio State’s pros showed up for the NCAA Tournament. Liddell averaged 16.5 points, eight rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals while shooting 45% from the field despite dealing with constant double teams. The loss to Villanova epitomized that. “We have been searching for that third and fourth guy,” head coach Chris Holtmann said. The problem was players ranked 3-8 would all be on the opposing roster. “When you’re playing great teams in big-time atmospheres like this, there is a lot of pressure there,” Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. In the NCAA Tournament, that’s often who leaves victorious.

You can pretty much count on what he’s going to be night in and night out.” As a freshman, Liddell was largely utilized as a role player off the bench but showed flashes of what he could become. “He’s been honest on social media,” Holtmann said. “I think he clearly made the right choice in coming back,” Holtmann said. The Belleville, Illinois, native was a threatening presence defensively as well, swiping three steals and a pair of blocks. Junior forward E. J. Liddell, who emerged as a cornerstone player for head coach Chris Holtmann’s Buckeyes, played what was likely his last game in an Ohio State uniform.

But today the heart and soul of the Browns is in question. Put your faith in the family of players, not in a few superstars who will come and go like the wind. No one will blame management if they fall short in this goal, but everyone will blame management if the approach of bringing in high-priced superstars fails. Money does not buy loyalty with this type of player, the loyalty the Browns fans want and need. As these players go to battle every week, the fans declare victory every time the battle is won. We are always wishing for the best, but preparing for the worst, a week-to-week ritual. We root for the Browns because they are family to us. To the editor: Why do we root for the Browns? It's certainly not because they are perennial winners, though they once were. I hope E. J. Liddell can demonstrate the skills and decisions of his leadership by staying at OSU for his senior year to graduate in 2023. To the editor: Some people never learn. These kids are probably the hardest working and most dedicated athletes to their sport and toil through their season, some through the summer also, with little recognition. That way, both the pro-Holtmann and anti-Holtmann sides could get great background on the team's formation and fortify their arguments.
Ohio State basketball takes on Villanova for a spot in the Sweet 16 of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Here's a prediction, odds, and best bet.
Look for the Buckeyes to make a game of this one, but for Villanova to pull it out. Probable (concussion protocol) – Young also played in the game against Loyola and the Buckeyes were glad to have him back on the floor. Don’t discount Ohio State’s ability to pull off the upset in this one if it plays anywhere near the defensive game it did against the Ramblers. The combination of these two teams together should result in a low-scoring game. Probable (ankle) – Key played in the game against Loyola but did not seem full speed. It won’t be an easy task, but if Ohio State can put forth the same defensive effort and timely buckets it did against Loyola-Chicago, there’s a chance to spring the upset. If you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck!
Will Ohio State keep March Madness going as the No. 7 seed Buckeyes face No.2 seed Villanova in the NCAA Tournament? Follow for live updates.
Villanova, meanwhile, beat Delaware 80-60 to advance. Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann and Villanova coach Jay Wright are friends, but one of them is going home and one will be taking his team to San Antonio, the site of the NCAA Tournament South regional. But to get there, the No. 7 seed Buckeyes have to beat No. 2 seed Villanova at 2:40 p.m. in Pittsburgh. The game is on CBS.
After Ohio State's tough loss to 2-seeded Villanova, Buckeyes head coach Chris Holtmann addressed the media about his future with the school.
I believe in what we're doing, I'm more than confident it will happen." I believe in what we’re doing, I’m more than confident it will happen.” And also said his team needs to just “keep getting there” in order to get over their NCAA Tournament hump.
Ohio State ends its season with a 20-12 record (12-8 Big Ten), the fifth straight year it has won at least 20 games.
Ohio State worked its way back into a game when it looked like the better team on paper would walk away with an easy win. The senior finished with 20 points as one of four players to reach double figures. He’d already missed time this season with a concussion, and it was the third time he’d been entered the concussion protocol in the past 12 months. “We really respect Ohio State and what a tough, intelligent team they are,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. But Villanova had an answer for every play the two made late, with Collin Gillespie leading the way. A 15-point deficit was a 60-58 game with less than five minutes to play.
The Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament run and 2022 season came to an end in Pittsburgh Sunday.
The Buckeyes allowed Villanova to shoot 52 percent in the first half while shooting just 38.5 percent themselves. The Buckeyes’ 2022 recruiting class ranks within the top five across men’s college basketball, according to several recruiting services. The Buckeyes had a 35-31 rebounding edge, but shot just 55 percent at the free throw line, going 6-for-11 at the charity stripe.
For the second straight year and the fourth time out of the last six NCAA Tournaments, the 'Cats dance on to the Sweet 16.
They’ll return to San Antonio, where they faced Michigan as a freshmen in the 2018 National Championship game. The Wildcats improve to 28-7 overall and will play 11th-seeded Michigan in next week’s Sweet 16. Justin Moore responded with a three to give Villanova a bit of breathing room, but Ohio State was relentless. Ohio State trimmed the double-digit deficit down to as low as two points, but also made it a one-possession game on several occasions. “(E. J.) Liddell is a beast and (Malaki) Branham was a handful,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “They had a stretch where they were hitting shot after shot, and we just said ‘Attitude,’” Villanova guard Collin Gillespie said.
The Ohio State basketball team is preparing for their round of 32 matchup in the NCAA Tournament with the 2nd-seeded Villanova Wildcats.
They applied great pressure on the perimeter, stayed strong on the inside, and blocked shots, and got deflections which was a huge factor in the win. However, I think the Buckeyes have a really good shot at upsetting the Wildcats and making it to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013. They held Loyola Chicago to only 41 points in the win.
No. 7 seed Ohio State needs an upset win over No. 2 Villanova in Pittsburgh to stay alive and secure a Sweet 16 berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Factor in that Villanova enters on a six-game win streak, and it’s hard to pick against the Wildcats, although Ohio State won’t make it easy on them. Gillespie leads Villanova with an average of 15.9 points per game, a career-high mark for the Pennsylvanian native, and he has also put up 3.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game to boot. Aside from a five-point game against Connecticut in the Big East Tournament semifinals, Gillespie has scored at least 11 points in six of his last seven games. Like Gillespie, fifth-year Wildcat forward Jermaine Samuels played for Jay Wright’s NCAA champion Villanova squad in 2018, and now the 6-foot-7 frontcourt player is a key contributor for a team with similar aspirations. Moore also averages five rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, and the junior led all Wildcats with 21 points against Delaware in Villanova’s first-round win. Ohio State’s wily veteran point guard will draw a difficult defensive assignment in matching up with Gillespie, who the Buckeyes must keep in check if they hope to have a chance at advancing past the second round. A bench contributor on Villanova’s national championship-winning 2017-18 team, Gillespie has started every game he’s appeared in since then for the Wildcats, racking up 121 starts over the course of his five-year college career. It may take more of the same in conjunction with an improved offensive effort to get to the Sweet 16, but the Buckeyes are far from incapable of putting on such a performance. Holtmann has made a Sweet 16 run before, doing so with Butler in 2016-17 before losing to North Carolina and taking the vacant Ohio State job the following offseason. Branham will be crucial again for the Buckeyes against Villanova, as the Wildcats lean heavily on guard play and will likely throw second-team All-Big East guard Justin Moore at the first-year wing. The following year, Kaleb Wesson and the 11th-seeded Buckeyes knocked off No. 6 Iowa State before dropping to Houston. Holtmann’s first Buckeye team beat South Dakota State before losing to Gonzaga as a No. 5 seed in the Round of 32 in 2018.
Especially coming after last season's brutal 15-2 matchup defeat in the first round. Going against a Loyola team that was in the Final Four not that long ago, ...

The last time these two played was in 2019 when OSU walked away with a 76-51 home win. Kyle Young and E.J. Liddell are the only players still currently on the ...
Villanova’s better, but there’s enough in OSU’s favor between Liddell, Branham and the return of Kyle Young for this to be a back and forth game for at least the first 35 minutes. But down the stretch, the Wildcats just have more people they can go to for offensive production while Ohio State is always a player going cold at the wrong time away from letting things get out of hand. But just like the Boilermakers did on Jan. 30, the Wildcats have four, and each impressed in Round One. The development of his overall offense has allowed that still to be a consistent threat with very few bad outings. Liddell was practically double every time he got the ball, and he wasn’t on the possessions. The last time these two played was in 2019 when OSU walked away with a 76-51 home win.
The Buckeyes and head coach Chris Holtmann, who moved to 6-1 all-time in the first round of the NCAA tournament with the win over the Ramblers, now face the No.
They will have to play a game like they did against Wisconsin earlier in the season to win this one. I have Villanova winning this game in a close one and bringing Ohio State’s season to a close. The Buckeyes have been a little bit too inconsistent at times this season for them to win this one. This will have to be a masterclass defensive performance from the Buckeyes. At first glance, Villanova was a nightmare matchup for the Buckeyes due to Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore making up one of the top backcourts in college basketball, the Wildcats experience, and Jay Wright is a top-five coach in the game. Villanova is a trendy Final Four pick and some people have them winning the whole thing. Ohio State will have to play similar defense against Villanova as they did against Loyola-Chicago while playing much better on the offensive end. The senior Gillespie (15.9 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.4 APG) and junior Moore (15.2 PPG, 5.0 RPG) truly make up one of the best backcourts in basketball and are also incredibly veteran and experienced. Guys like Jamari Wheeler, Cedric Russell, and Justin Ahrens know that every game could be their last and they will be more motivated than ever to knock down those shots. It would be five but the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID 19. Coach Holtmann also recorded his fifth straight 20 win season as the Buckeyes headman. The Buckeyes survived and they advanced.
