He left Iowa State for the UW, but went right back to the school after his two seasons in the Pac-12. This time, he stayed one year with the Cyclones before receiving his first head-coaching job at South Dakota State for the 2016-17 season. Otzelberger first came to Iowa State as an assistant coach for McDermott in 2006 and stayed on when Hoiberg took over as the Cyclones coach in 2010, spending eight seasons in Ames altogether. He was much more ambitious.

"Not a lot of guys stayed on the team from last year, so we all had like a clean slate," Kunc said. Otzelberger, a Milwaukee native, sought "low-ego, high-producing guys" in reshaping the roster largely through the transfer portal. "How we turned around this program from [2-22] to the Sweet 16, it's crazy," said Cyclones guard Gabe Kalscheur, who scored a game-high 22 points. "We're on a big stage here. Before Sunday, the team with the lowest winning percentage to reach the Sweet 16 the following year was Ohio State, which went 8-22 (.267) in 1997-98 before a Final Four run in 1998-99. "We didn't set out for a certain win total or to do anything based on what transpired in the past," Otzelberger said.

Wisconsin men's basketball: UW shoots self right out of NCAA Tournament The #Badgers couldn't hit the ocean from a boat on Sunday and Iowa State's smothering ...
He was a true joy to watch play this year and the team will need him at 100% next season. Wisconsin only scored four points in the final 4:37 of the first half, with zero of those points coming off of a made field goal. The Badgers went 15 minutes of a 40 minute game and only scored one basket!!! The next field goal didn’t come until there was 9:49 left in the game! While he was trying to get back in the play he stepped awkwardly and rolled his ankle pretty severely. Freshman guard Tyrese Hunter had a dreadful shooting night, but recorded three steals for Iowa State. Gabe Kalscheur and Izaiah Brockington each had two and the Cyclones as a team had nine. Wisconsin turned the ball over on 24.7% of their possessions for a grand total of 17 turnovers. Yes the Badgers settled for threes on some possessions, but ISU was quick to double team every Wisconsin player in the post and made Crowl, or Tyler Wahl, or Chris Vogt pass it back out. In the second half, the Badgers hoisted up 14 threes and only made one (1) of them! Johnny Davis missed all seven of his three point attempts, Steven Crowl missed a trio, Ben Carlson and Jahcobi Neath each missed a three pointer so bad I’m shocked the announcers didn’t audibly gasp. Wisconsin roared out of the gate against Iowa State, shooting 1-for-8 (12.5%) in the first half from deep, and then...well...then things got really ugly. Despite playing what was basically a home game, the 3-seed Wisconsin Badgers lost to the 11-seed Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday night at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee by a score of 54-49.
Iowa State was the more aggressive team and kept Wisconsin from getting into a rhythm offensively. Gabe Kalscheur was huge all night on the other end. Kalscheur ...
Stay tuned to WRNL all week as Iowa State prepares to play the winner of Auburn and Miami in the Sweet Sixteen! Kalscheur for all his struggles this season went to work and kept Iowa State rolling all night. Iowa State got deep into foul trouble and seemingly couldn’t do anything without the refs blowing the whistle.

Miami has players from nine different states as well as Australia, New Zealand, Greece and the Netherlands. It has no players from Florida. Iowa State has players from Slovenia and the Netherlands. The 2000 team is the only one that reached the Elite Eight. It lost Sweet 16 games in 2000, 2013 and 2016. The Cyclones beat Miami 73-56 in the Advocare Invitational at Disney World in 2016. What T.J. Otzelberger and his team of leftovers, transfers and a star freshman have done cannot be overstated. It's absolutely historic.
“We're asking our guys to do really hard things all the time and give multiple efforts,” Otzelberger said. It defies both the big picture momentum of the program and reality of this roster’s limitations. Beautiful basketball is not the goal, though. What I saw out there (Sunday) was a group of guys that believe in our defense, believe in our toughness. This roster could not be a team that played beautiful basketball. A roster, like Hoiberg’s, that needed overhauling.
In another neck-and-neck, defense-heavy game, the No. 11-seeded Cyclones upset No. 3-seeded Wisconsin. It came despite playing in a hostile environment.
Wisconsin had 13 trips to the free-throw line in the first half while Iowa State had just two. It did not hit a field goal in the last four minutes. It will be the Cyclones’ third Sweet 16 appearance since 2014. A somewhat-unusual contributor led the Cyclones’ scoring. Sunday’s contest had nine lead changes, and neither team led by more than five points in the first half. For every one foul called on Wisconsin in the first half, the officials called more than more than two on the Cyclones. “They weren't in rhythm, so that helped us. Iowa State shot 34 percent from the field and 21 percent from deep. “Our ball pressure took away the shots they normally get in the flow of their offense,” head coach T. J. Otzelberger said. “It's unbelievable,” guard Izaiah Brockington said. The Cyclones held the Badgers to 30-percent shooting from the field and 9-percent shooting from deep. While Wisconsin later cut the lead to as few as four points and brought it to five points in the final minutes, the Badgers never retook the lead.
The Cyclones (22-12) had a 2-22 record in 2021 but have now won two games in the NCAA tournament in their first season with T.J. Otzelberger as head coach.

The Cyclones are going to the NCAA tournament's second weekend for the first time since 2016.
The Badgers shot 38.1 percent from the field and were 1 of 8 from 3. Kalscheur helped power the offense with 10 points in the first half while Izaiah Brockington and Tyrese Hunter (4 of 15 combined) struggled from the floor. Iowa State opened the season with the lowest of expectations. It is, simply, one of the great turnarounds in this sport's history. The Cyclones shot 38.7 percent from the field and were 1 of 9 from 3. They'll play No. 10 seed Miami, which upset second-seeded Auburn late Sunday, at 9 p.m. Friday in Chicago.
UW can't overcome the loss of Chucky Hepburn (leg) and horrific shooting from three-point range (2 of 22).
"The finality of that last time and not being able to go to practice tomorrow, next week, those type of things. The senior guard hit 5 of 9 shots in the opening half and scored 10 points to help the Cyclones take a 27-26 lead. "We played 30-some games with him at the helm," Gard said, "and at this point in time in the season... In addition to shooting 9.1% from three-point range, UW finished at a season-low 29.8% overall (14 of 47) and had a season-high 17 turnovers. "When you're trying to find a rhythm, being in foul trouble is not a way." "It's not the actual game itself. "I was just locked in," he said. "Just a lot of emotions," he said when asked to describe his thoughts in seeing his college run over. He finished with two points and just one rebound. He finished with eight points and eight rebounds. We needed to have him on the court." Iowa State (22-12), which won just two games last season, rebounded under first-year coach T. J. Otzelberger to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016.
The Badgers and Cyclones meet on Sunday evening with a Sweet 16 berth on the line.
* With one three-point make, Brad Davison will move into a tie for fifth place on the Wisconsin all-time single season three-pointers made list. The Badgers only loss came to Georgia State, 50-49, in 2001. They have no players in their rotation taller than 6-foot-9 and while the Badgers don’t exactly have a rim-protector on the roster, there could be opportunities for some blocked shots Sunday night. With 10 three-pointers, Davison will move into tenth on the Big Ten career list for three-pointers made. Unfortunately for them, Wisconsin is the best team in the country in NOT turning the ball over. It won’t be aesthetically pleasing, and it will almost assuredly be close, but the Badgers have thrived in those situations all season so why would this game be any different? This game has all the makings of a, uh, rough watch for neutral fans. The Clone struggle to get to the free throw line and, when they do get there, they aren’t very good at making their freebies. The Cyclones entered the season with a brand new coach and a new-look roster after having only won two games the year prior. In fact, they have the fourth best turnover percentage in the country on defense. Another thing to note is that ISU is not a tall team. The Badgers enter the game having staved up a valiant upset attempt by the Colgate Raiders in round one while the Clones held off the higher-seeded LSU Tigers to advance to the next round.

The senior guard was a steady source of offense. The impact of Hepburn's absence was evident in Wisconsin's turnover numbers. They combined for just 25 points midway through the first half, and Iowa State clung to a 27-26 halftime lead after Caleb Grill scored at the buzzer. Iowa State shot 34.5 percent from the floor, which was at least better than Wisconsin (29.5 percent) fared. Those misses represented Wisconsin's last real opportunity to come back. Johnny Davis is bound to get a bunch of attention from the Cyclones, so passing the ball into the post to Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl could be necessary. Hunter was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and is one of the best young guards in the country. The Cyclones are No. 10 in adjusted defense according to KenPom and rely on heavy ball pressure from their guards to generate steals and force chaos. The rest of the Cyclone roster is not nearly as effective on the offensive end, so Wisconsin would be wise to force Iowa State's frontcourt and bench to beat them. Hunter is best on the defensive end of the floor, however. The game is set to tip-off at 5:10 p.m. central time in Milwaukee, with the Badgers expecting a heavy home-court advantage.

He held Izaiah Brockington to only 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting and deserves a ton of credit for his gritty effort. The Cyclones would go on a 6-0 run immediately following Hepburn leaving the floor and would not look back. In the final game of his Wisconsin career, Brad Davison put together an admirable performance. While the Badgers were 8-of-13 on layups, they were only 8-of-32 on shots outside of the paint. The Badgers picked a bad time to have their worst shooting game of the season. Point guard Chucky Hepburn was limited to only 14 minutes on Sunday night due to an ankle injury.
