Duke basketball

2022 - 3 - 20

On To The Sweet Sixteen (unknown)

Duke had a dramatic win over Michigan State, covered thoroughly elsewhere here, and Miami...Miami just ate Auburn alive. Ate Auburn like an after-dinner mint.

However, it certainly looked to us like Arizona fouled on the last TCU possession in overtime. We just didn’t think they were capable of this level of dominance of a Top Five-level team. Check out what Auburn’s Zep Jasper said about Miami before the game: “[t]hey are in the ACC and we’re in the SEC. We’re one of the best defensive teams in the country. He reminded us a good bit of Loyola’s Cameron Krutwig last season. * #4 Arkansas is the last SEC team standing. The ‘Canes were quicker to the ball and consistently outsmarted Bruce Pearl’s #2 seeded Tigers.

The ACC Showed Up to Dance (unknown)

That's more Sweet 16 teams than the Big Ten (2) or the SEC (1) and the same number as the Big 12. And while NCAA tournament success can't be the only factor in ...

No. 11 Villanova: Big East Player of the Year Maddy Siegrist scored 25 points and hauled in seven rebounds in her team’s four-point upset win over BYU on Saturday. She’ll look to build on that performance in the round of 32 as Villanova tries to go from a bubble team to a Sweet 16 team. No. 9 Kansas State: Two of the country’s top centers will face off in this matchup as the Wildcats, led by first-team All-American Ayoka Lee, will look to pull off a major upset over the Wolfpack and second-team All-American Elissa Cunane. A win would send Kansas State to its fifth-ever Sweet 16 and its first appearance in a regional semifinal since 2002. Michigan cruised past American in the first round with senior forward Naz Hillmon now looking to guide the Wolverines into the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive tournament. • No. 3 Indiana vs. And with that, there are no more perfect brackets, men’s or women’s, left on the internet. • Drew Timme came up big for Gonzaga with a halftime locker room speech and a bust-out second-half performance. The last four days prove that reports of the ACC’s demise as a basketball power were premature. And Notre Dame? The Irish were still figuring out how to unlock the unlimited potential of freshman PG Blake Wesley, who helped ND to a pair of tournament wins this past week before eventually bowing out against Texas Tech. And while NCAA tournament success can’t be the only factor in evaluating conference strength, it’s clear the ACC criticism that was a common refrain among national talking heads (myself included) was too harsh. It’s certainly true that the ACC’s non-conference schedule, outside of Duke, left a lot to be desired. But perhaps there’s something to be said for not counting out conferences based on what happens in the season’s first few weeks, particularly in the age of the transfer portal and increased roster turnover. And again, there are absolutely limitations to using March Madness success to fully shape narratives about which leagues are good.

Duke Blows By Michigan State In Winning Time, 85-76 (unknown)

And it was a team effort, Jeremy Roach, Mark Williams, Paolo Banchero, Wendell Moore, Jr. and Trevor Keels all making big plays in that closing run, big shots, ...

But Williams scored the last four points of the half and Duke took a tenuous 39-35 lead into intermission. There was still so much time on the clock, I knew we had a chance. The win checked a lot of statistical boxes. Gabe Brown hit three 3-pointers in a span of 2:29 and the game was tied at 33-33 and 35-35. A tough match to be sure. ` Then Duke threatened to knock out Michigan State. Duke led by nine points at 44-35 and 46-37.

Duke's 'Road Crew' pulls Coach K's final season out of the abyss (unknown)

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Mike Krzyzewski looked down the dais at the five players who'd refused to let his last dance come to an end, who engineered a frenetic ...

It's a refrain he has echoed often this season, and he wondered if the bill had come due for packing a roster with potential lottery picks who hadn't quite found their sea legs. It allowed a legion of Duke fans to exhale for the first time in what felt like an eternity. In a game sold as a matchup of legendary coaches, Duke's players scripted their own mythology. And then Roach delivered the dagger -- a 3-pointer that Krzyzewski insists found the basket not through accuracy but sheer force of will. "They lost at home to North Carolina. They lost to Virginia Tech. Same kind of games. The NCAA tournament was supposed to be a fresh start, and yet the basketball gods conspired to provide one more compelling moment all about their coach. Tom Izzo was no doubt the NCAA's dream matchup when it placed Duke and Michigan State in the same region. That's what had Krzyzewski's eyes watering after the game. The finality of Krzyzewski's run has hung like a cloud over everything Duke has done this season, each game, junior Wendell Moore Jr. said, another "last something" for Krzyzewski, but always with the knowledge that more "lasts" awaited. Jeremy Roach was the forgotten member of Duke's band of lottery picks, but he drove to the basket again and again in those final minutes, attacking the basket with such determination that even Krzyzewski was stunned. All season, the Blue Devils have worked to carve out their own space amid the overwhelming narrative of Krzyzewski's last dance. For nearly a year, he has known the finish line was in sight.

Outside of some outstanding finishes at the rim, he also matched Keels with a clutch 3 of his own that put Duke ahead 78-74 with 1:14 remaining. Banchero’s layup gave Duke a 75-74 lead at the 2:05 mark, and that fueled a 13-2 run to end the game. The No. 2-rankeBlue Devils won 69-58 behind Zion Williamson's 17 points and 13 rebounds. From there, Duke took over – and it started with Keels, who tied the score at 72 with a clutch top-of-the-key 3-pointer. After trailing 70-65 with 5:10 left in the second half, Duke ended the game on a 20-6 run. Michigan State led by three points at the 3:43 mark of the second half after two Sam Hauser free throws.

How Duke's best five minutes of basketball this season saved everything as it rallied late past Michigan State (unknown)

Michigan State hadn't come to play -- it came to bust Duke open. Tom Izzo's team looked hungry, opportunistic and alert. Deep into the second half, the Spartans ...

The potential was there for it all to end for Duke and K, for Michigan State to spoil. I don't want to sit down and say, 'You guys enjoy it.' I want to be in the party a little bit. It all had to do with heart and togetherness. Duke was 5 for 5 from the field in the final five minutes; its only misses came at the foul line. It put Duke up four and seemed to spook Michigan State. Roach was the guy once Griffin couldn't play. And Jeremy Roach hit the 3-pointer that gave Duke a four-point lead with 1:16 to go. It had to be consistent. It had to be pushed. "My guys were so tough in those last six minutes of the game," Krzyzewski said. 3-seed Texas Tech. It could be in the ultimate game in New Orleans with a national championship on the line. A South Carolina Sunday was where and when Duke had to prove itself. It could be on Thursday in the Sweet 16, in San Francisco vs.

We all need Duke in the NCAA tournament now more than ever (unknown)

You know how crazy the internet is going to get when he loses and his career comes to an end? We all need a team that is universally disliked to bring us together and bring some more intensity out of a game that we normally wouldn’t care all that much about. It’s like rooting against the Patriots if you don’t have a team in the fight. They just kind of blend into the whole picture and don’t make you feel any sort of way about them. If you didn’t go to Duke chances are you hate Duke. You love to see Duke lose and love to boo them any chance you get. Mike Krzyzewski’s legendary career was so close to coming to an end and everyone on the internet was ready to dance on his coaching grave.

Duke men's basketball holds off Michigan State to advance to Sweet 16 (unknown)

With just over six minutes left in the game, Duke gave up the lead it had been holding for so long, and the pressure was on.

Duke needed performances from a large group of guys to maintain a lead throughout most of the period. As a team, Duke shot a clean 57% from the field, which was exactly what it needed to pull off this win. He shot 4-of-4 from deep in the first 20 minutes and nearly single-handedly brought the Spartans within striking distance of Duke. Michigan State shot an incredible 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the first frame and the Blue Devils’ perimeter defense that half was indicative of what was displayed in the remainder of the game. A Michigan State 3-pointer and pair of free throws began to bury the Blue Devils as they found themselves down 70-65 deep in the second half. Banchero had yet another spectacular game, leading the team in scoring with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting (2-of-5 from deep) and playing another game of tough, in-your-face defense. The Spartans shot just 6-of-20 from inside the arc. And although this game was played four hours from Durham in Bon Secours Wellness Arena, it really played like a home game for second-seeded Duke with blue shirts taking up well more than half of the crowd. Sophomore guard Jeremy Roach splashed perhaps the biggest 3-pointer of his career on Duke’s next possession and the four-point lead was restored with 1:07 to play. The first half was consistently close. This was a hard-fought battle through and through, but in the end the Blue Devils came out on top 85-76. It all had to do with heart and togetherness." "I've had 47 years, today was one of the really good days."

San Francisco Bound! Duke Is In the NCAA 2022 Sweet Sixteen · #404 - Duke beats CS-Fullerton, prepares for Sparty.

But as Michael Jordan once said, when the game is on the line, a lot of guys will look away. A lot of praise to pass around but he gets some special acknowledgement, not least of all for that amazingly ballsy last three. The only way beating Michigan State is ever going to be easy is if they beat themselves or maybe play you in November, but that’s by design. Jeremy Roach followed with a layup of his own to cut it to 70-69. Then Wendell Moore hit his free throws before Walker hit a layup for Michigan State’s final points. Then Michigan State pushed the lead to five when Marcus Bingham hit a pair of free throws, things were not looking good.

Men's N.C.A.A. Tournament: Houston Advances to Round of 16 (The New York Times)

This matchup between the No. 2 seed Duke and the No. 7 seed Michigan State instead offered a classic Goliath versus Goliath: One college basketball juggernaut ...

Instead, the Badgers fell, 54-49, to Iowa State, a No. 11 seed that has made it out of the first weekend after back-to-back upset victories over other Power 5 programs. As a result, Texas Tech advanced to the round of 16 on Thursday against Duke in San Francisco. “The ball’s going to go in some nights, and some nights it’s not,” Kevin McCullar, the Texas Tech guard, said. After a double-overtime classic against Rutgers in a play-in game and a spirited first-round win over Alabama on Friday, the Fighting Irish simply could not overcome the nation’s leader in defensive efficiency. They bumped, they grinded, they switched and they dared Notre Dame to bring its offense into the middle of the floor. Ohio State’s E.J. Liddell had 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in what was likely his final college game before he heads to the N.B.A. draft. Under the Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright, Villanova won N.C.A.A. titles in 2016 and 2018, the latter when Gillespie was a freshman. The Wildcats (28-7) will next face No. 11 Michigan (19-14) in a South regional game on Thursday in San Antonio. He hit two free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory. It lost again to Virginia Tech in the A.C.C. tournament final in Brooklyn before dominating Cal State Fullerton in the first round and holding off Izzo and Michigan State on Sunday night. Illinois (23-10) lost in the second round for the second straight year after being among the top seeds. And in a game befitting the careers of two coaches who have been among the faces of their sport for decades, Duke outlasted Michigan State, 85-76, in the round of 32, extending its season and the career of the man nicknamed Coach K for at least one more game.

Duke's Championship Approach Paying Off Big for Young Blue Devils (CalBearsMaven)

Coach K's Blue Devils are treating every game like it's for the title. On Sunday, that helped it survive MSU.

“We were so good in the last part of the game, I can’t tell you how proud I am of them,” he said. “Ever since then we called ourselves the ‘Road Crew,’” Moore said. “It’s about having heart and just trusting each other.” “Obviously, it’s a lot of wins against quality competition,” Krzyzewski said. It set up a critical Jeremy Roach three-pointer to extend the lead. “Today was a good example of that.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski continued his mastery of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo with another win in the second round.

Michigan State responded to everything Duke threw at it on Sunday, and was in the game late with a chance to win. Roach was a five-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class with the hype of a potential one-and-done prospect. After going 0 for 3 from the floor in the first half, Roach scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to lead the Blue Devils. His 3-pointer with 1:16 left gave the Blue Devils a 78-74 lead. Against Duke, Michigan State hit 11 of 22 from deep and went blow for blow with a Blue Devils team that shot 57.1% from the floor while dominating the interior. In his absence, the Blue Devils got a major lift from sophomore guard Jeremy Roach in the second half. The outcome gave Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski his 1,200th victory and prolonged his career for at least one more game he prepares to retire at the end of the season.

'We just didn't have enough,' Izzo says on Michigan State ... (Detroit Free Press)

Coach Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball were already looking to the 2022-23 season soon after Spartans' loss in the NCAA tournament on Sunday.

That is as physical of a perimeter team as I think I've ever played against him, and they just drove it, drove it, and drove it.” “I'll always pull for Mike. I think he's done some things that will go down in the lores of basketball,” said Izzo, who has 666 career victories. And Brown cryptically appeared to leave the door ajar for a potential comeback. This gives them motivation going into the off-season to work hard and get stronger and just remember this moment so when they come back, they'll be prepared.” Hoggard scored four straight, Walker drained a step-back 3-pointer and Bingham hit a pair of free throws in a 9-0 run that gave the Spartans a 70-65 edge with 5:10 to play. I hope the people realize this program is here to stay, because today was probably a helluva game for TV. A helluva game.” “I thought they reached down in Mike Krzyzewski fashion and did an unbelievable job of kind of taking it at us. Banchero scored at the other end to give the Blue Devils the lead for good, as they closed out with a 20-6 run after MSU went up five. “We didn't maybe follow the game plan totally, and some of it is because sometimes some guys are bigger, stronger, and quicker,” MSU coach Tom Izzo said. And Bingham also helped defend and pester Duke big men Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams in the paint. He drew contact in the paint and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Marcus Bingham Jr. playing perhaps the most passionate and possessed stretch of his career.
