How Duke's best five minutes of basketball this season saved everything as it rallied late past Michigan State (unknown)

Michigan State hadn't come to play -- it came to bust Duke open. Tom Izzo's team looked hungry, opportunistic and alert. Deep into the second half, the Spartans ...

The potential was there for it all to end for Duke and K, for Michigan State to spoil. I don't want to sit down and say, 'You guys enjoy it.' I want to be in the party a little bit. It all had to do with heart and togetherness. Duke was 5 for 5 from the field in the final five minutes; its only misses came at the foul line. It put Duke up four and seemed to spook Michigan State. Roach was the guy once Griffin couldn't play. And Jeremy Roach hit the 3-pointer that gave Duke a four-point lead with 1:16 to go. It had to be consistent. It had to be pushed. "My guys were so tough in those last six minutes of the game," Krzyzewski said. 3-seed Texas Tech. It could be in the ultimate game in New Orleans with a national championship on the line. A South Carolina Sunday was where and when Duke had to prove itself. It could be on Thursday in the Sweet 16, in San Francisco vs.

Duke's Championship Approach Paying Off Big for Young Blue Devils (CalBearsMaven)

Coach K's Blue Devils are treating every game like it's for the title. On Sunday, that helped it survive MSU.

“We were so good in the last part of the game, I can’t tell you how proud I am of them,” he said. “Ever since then we called ourselves the ‘Road Crew,’” Moore said. “It’s about having heart and just trusting each other.” “Obviously, it’s a lot of wins against quality competition,” Krzyzewski said. It set up a critical Jeremy Roach three-pointer to extend the lead. “Today was a good example of that.

Duke Blue Devils storm back vs. Michigan State to keep coach Mike ... (ESPN)

Mike Krzyzewski notched his 1200th career win and is heading to his 26th Sweet 16 after Duke came back late to beat Michigan State on Sunday.

"Obviously, it's a lot of wins, but it's a lot of wins against quality competition. It allowed the Duke players to celebrate, his grandkids to get excited. To be in a scenario in which winning the game was a possibility. "Probably beating myself up for a week because not many times do you get an opportunity to be right there in the threshold of something special. It's not just the number of wins; it's the competition we've had in order to win. It erased a strong game from Michigan State's seniors, Gabe Brown (18 points, 4-of-6 from 3-point range) and Bingham (16 points, 10 rebounds). It was Brown and Bingham who often kept the Spartans (23-13) in the game and within distance of possibly ending Krzyzewski's career. "The 1,200 wins is substantial," Krzyzewski said. "I got guys who want to win and our goal is to win the whole thing all the time, even if we're young." It had not been the easiest win of his career, but it was another one. It had the intensity and closeness those games have and the name programs that often play in them. Before the game, he and Krzyzewski spoke briefly about their mutual appreciation for each other. More special than any of that, though, was the scene going on behind him.

An average team with a lot of heart that was on the threshold of something bigger with five minutes to go. “We just didn't do the things that we needed to do to win these kinds of games. The gleam in his eye that had come with the big crowds, private planes and game-winners in his first season with Michigan State shined through a little bit of water. He said it was different from the one filled with tears, instead of disappointment, on Sunday night. Izzo condemned the team’s defensive lapses in the game and the frustration from it clearly lingered in players' and coaches’ psyches throughout the season. Michigan State’s rocky 2020-21 campaign came to an end with a woeful 86-80 loss to UCLA in the First Four that saw the Spartans blow a 12-point lead and eventually roll over in overtime. But for a night, they were back on the cusp of greatness. But up 70-65 with 5:10 to go, the Spartans were in position. In a sport and season defined by chaos, the roadmap to a historic upset wouldn’t be a neat step-by-step guide. Try to come out with energy, try to finish with a little more. It came from the man sitting on the Blue Devil’s bench that walked, talked and coached like he had 1,199 career wins, 5 national championships and 12 Final Fours to his name. There were open ends, some gray areas and a decent chance Michigan State would never be in a position to execute.

Coach Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball were already looking to the 2022-23 season soon after Spartans' loss in the NCAA tournament on Sunday.

That is as physical of a perimeter team as I think I've ever played against him, and they just drove it, drove it, and drove it.” “I'll always pull for Mike. I think he's done some things that will go down in the lores of basketball,” said Izzo, who has 666 career victories. And Brown cryptically appeared to leave the door ajar for a potential comeback. This gives them motivation going into the off-season to work hard and get stronger and just remember this moment so when they come back, they'll be prepared.” Hoggard scored four straight, Walker drained a step-back 3-pointer and Bingham hit a pair of free throws in a 9-0 run that gave the Spartans a 70-65 edge with 5:10 to play. I hope the people realize this program is here to stay, because today was probably a helluva game for TV. A helluva game.” “I thought they reached down in Mike Krzyzewski fashion and did an unbelievable job of kind of taking it at us. Banchero scored at the other end to give the Blue Devils the lead for good, as they closed out with a 20-6 run after MSU went up five. “We didn't maybe follow the game plan totally, and some of it is because sometimes some guys are bigger, stronger, and quicker,” MSU coach Tom Izzo said. And Bingham also helped defend and pester Duke big men Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams in the paint. He drew contact in the paint and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Marcus Bingham Jr. playing perhaps the most passionate and possessed stretch of his career.

Davidson registered its first goal of the contest at 10:26 in the fourth quarter as Duke's offense and defense stifled the Wildcats. Duke is fortunate to have a deep goalkeeping squad and used that this afternoon with four different goalkeepers. Erin Cooke paced the Wildcats' offense with two assists for two points. "We just finished our second third and now we're going into the last third. Carner has scored at least one goal in 10 of Duke's 11 games this season. Over her career, she has tallied 10 or more draw controls 28 times and owns a career-high 21.

Though the Cardinals had the better second half, the Blue Devils’ strong first-half play was enough to get their ninth victory of the season. While Duke did get five goals in the third quarter, Louisville registered four, doing its best to catch up to the prevailing Blue Devils. And Duke ensured that a point from Louisville’s Paige Richbourg would be the last from them of the half—executing doubles on players driving to the cage and finishing with a Katie Keller free position shot with 14 seconds go. It was Duke’s third scoring run of the night, and the first time it extended its lead to six—a lead that the Blue Devils would keep for the majority of their time on the field that night. After a missed shot by Louisville’s Allegra Catalano at 4:10 in the first quarter, goalie Sophia LeRose’s clear to her teammates led the beginning of the Blue Devils’ second 3-0 run to edge out the Cardinals from getting closer. But it was clear from that moment Barry started the run in the second quarter that Duke would remain the dominant team.

Duke is 8-1 this season when this group starts. “We just have to be stronger.”

Duke vs. Michigan State score, takeaways: No. 2 seed Blue Devils ... (CBSSports.com)

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski continued his mastery of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo with another win in the second round.

Michigan State responded to everything Duke threw at it on Sunday, and was in the game late with a chance to win. Roach was a five-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class with the hype of a potential one-and-done prospect. After going 0 for 3 from the floor in the first half, Roach scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to lead the Blue Devils. His 3-pointer with 1:16 left gave the Blue Devils a 78-74 lead. Against Duke, Michigan State hit 11 of 22 from deep and went blow for blow with a Blue Devils team that shot 57.1% from the floor while dominating the interior. In his absence, the Blue Devils got a major lift from sophomore guard Jeremy Roach in the second half. The outcome gave Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski his 1,200th victory and prolonged his career for at least one more game he prepares to retire at the end of the season.

The win sends Krzyzewski to the Sweet 16 for the 26th time as he chases his sixth national championship. This marked the sixth and final meeting between the two Hall of Famers. The Blue Devils were up 39-35 at halftime and pushed the lead to as high as nine points two minutes into the second half. Griffin never returned but did remain on the Duke bench. "For a young group, they showed incredible guts," Krzyzewski said after the game on CBS. "It wasn't any coaching. Michigan State was ahead 16-15 with 11:11 left in the first half but didn't retake the lead until going ahead 68-65 with 5:24 left, and pushed the lead to 70-65 with a pair of free throws on the next possession.

FINAL: Duke 85, Michigan State 76, Spartans eliminated in second ... (The State News)

In one of the most exciting games of the season, Michigan State was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 85-76 loss to Duke.

As they kept them down, the Spartans whittled it down to a tie off a pair of free throws from Hoggard with under seven minutes to go. Hauser hit the one-and-one to keep the Spartans up 72-69, only for freshman guard Trevor Keels to answer with a tying three. Freshman guard A.J. Griffin got a layup to extend Duke’s lead and break the three-point frenzy momentarily, only for Brown to get another open look from the arc to tie the game at 33. Michigan State freshman guard Jaden Akins knocked down a three to draw the Spartans within four before Duke freshman Paolo Banchero pulled up for one of his own to keep his opponents at arm’s length. Duke’s defense played with greater cohesion to force a slew of turnovers and the Spartans missed 10 straight shots in a near six minute scoring drought that saw them fall behind 23-16 after a 10-0 Blue Devil run. Along with redshirt senior Joey Hauser, the three seniors of the team helped buoy an ever-active defense that buoyed them in a strong start and helped them crawl back into the game after falling behind.

Now, the Spartans are left with conflicting feelings of being proud of the performance and the grief that the season is over at the hands of a team that played flawlessly in crunch time. With 1:16 left, Roach, who Izzo called the MVP of the game, plunged a dagger into the heart of MSU and its season. “But we'll learn from it, we'll get better from it, and hopefully as I said, great for Mike. I don't want to take anything away from Duke because I think they showed their truest colors.” Sophomore guard A.J. Hoggard, not to be outdone by his counterpart, sliced through Duke’s defense and flipped up a prayer of a layup off the glass and in to put MSU ahead 74-72. Duke finished the game on a 13-2 run and hit its last five field goals. The Spartans came up empty-handed on the next possession, leading to a reverse layup for junior guard Jeremy Roach on the other end. “Then in the last five minutes, I think they made every shot.” Duke took the lead a minute later on a layup from Banchero. The Spartans led 70-65 after monumental plays from Walker and Bingham on both ends of the floor with five minutes left. MSU head coach Tom Izzo stalked up and down the sidelines, with a vein protruding from his forehead, screaming defensive instructions to his team. For 35 minutes, Michigan State did everything it needed to do to pull off the upset. Michigan State had Duke, the antagonist for much of Izzo’s career, on the ropes.

No. 11 Villanova: Big East Player of the Year Maddy Siegrist scored 25 points and hauled in seven rebounds in her team’s four-point upset win over BYU on Saturday. She’ll look to build on that performance in the round of 32 as Villanova tries to go from a bubble team to a Sweet 16 team. No. 9 Kansas State: Two of the country’s top centers will face off in this matchup as the Wildcats, led by first-team All-American Ayoka Lee, will look to pull off a major upset over the Wolfpack and second-team All-American Elissa Cunane. A win would send Kansas State to its fifth-ever Sweet 16 and its first appearance in a regional semifinal since 2002. Michigan cruised past American in the first round with senior forward Naz Hillmon now looking to guide the Wolverines into the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive tournament. • No. 3 Indiana vs. And with that, there are no more perfect brackets, men’s or women’s, left on the internet. • Drew Timme came up big for Gonzaga with a halftime locker room speech and a bust-out second-half performance. The last four days prove that reports of the ACC’s demise as a basketball power were premature. And Notre Dame? The Irish were still figuring out how to unlock the unlimited potential of freshman PG Blake Wesley, who helped ND to a pair of tournament wins this past week before eventually bowing out against Texas Tech. And while NCAA tournament success can’t be the only factor in evaluating conference strength, it’s clear the ACC criticism that was a common refrain among national talking heads (myself included) was too harsh. It’s certainly true that the ACC’s non-conference schedule, outside of Duke, left a lot to be desired. But perhaps there’s something to be said for not counting out conferences based on what happens in the season’s first few weeks, particularly in the age of the transfer portal and increased roster turnover. And again, there are absolutely limitations to using March Madness success to fully shape narratives about which leagues are good.
