With the victory, Burns joined Paul Casey (2018-19) as the only repeat winners in the tournament's history and claimed the $1.404 million first place prize money payout from an overall purse of $7.8 million. Three back of Riley to start the day, Burns got hot with his putter en route to a Sunday 69 and then making the long putt in the playoff to cap the victory. Indeed, Riley was facing a situation he hadn’t been in in his 24 previous tour starts.

Sam Burns and Davis Riley, contending at the Valspar Championship, once made a “Birdie Dance” video. And it's glorious.

What do you think?” “Oh, yeah, I’ve known Davis for years,” Burns said. From left to right in the video are Riley, Dalke and Burns. For the first 15 seconds, they get loose, then they let loose; Dalke even breaks out a golf swing. Back in 2014, Burns and Riley were teammates on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. “I feel like this is the kind of video that you sort of tape and it haunts you for the rest of your life,” Whiteley said. The 25-year-olds go back a ways, too.

Thomas had reached the turn in 36 and lost further ground with a double-bogey at the par-five 11th, only to make successive birdies from the 13th and find himself within one of the lead when Burns failed to get up and down from the sand at the par-three 17th. Burns, playing in the group ahead, missed a six-foot birdie chance at the fourth but holed from a similar distance at the next to briefly jump ahead, while Riley pitched in from off the eighth green to reach the turn in a share of the lead. Sam Burns birdied the second play-off hole to edge past Davis Riley in Florida and claim his third PGA Tour title in 12 months; Justin Thomas finished a shot back alongside Matthew NeSmith, with Matt Fitzpatrick in tied-fifth at the Valspar Championship

Davis Riley lost a two-shot lead thanks to a disastrous triple bogey on a par 5 in the final round of the 2022 Valspar Championship.

“Yeah, I just hit a bad tee shot and then from there it was just kind of a cluster,” explained Riley, who ultimately lost in a playoff after Sam Burns made a 33-footer for birdie on the second playoff hole. The 25-year-old PGA Tour rookie made the only triple bogey of the week on No. 5 at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course at the worst time. He had gone 34 holes without a bogey before that hole.
