Notre Dame Basketball takes on Texas Tech with the opportunity to go to the Sweet 16. Do the Irish have another upset in them?
This Irish team has proved many doubters wrong the first two games so far through March Madness already and they are looking to prove some more wrong on Sunday. To be personally honest Notre Dame is perfectly fine with that as well. When the brackets were announced on Sunday not a lot of people had Notre Dame Basketball beating a tough Rutgers team.
Ahead of Sunday's round-two matchup, here's what Texas Tech basketball fans need to know about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
On Friday, the Red Raiders hit 12-20 (60%) from the 3-point line in one of the program’s best-shooting games of all time. If that happens, it could pull the Irish out of their zone where Tech’s athleticism and size advantage could take over against a defense that isn’t very good. At certain points this season, Tech has struggled against zones, especially given how suspect the Red Raiders can be when shooting the ball from beyond the arc. That’s because Tech leads the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency (according to KenPom.com) while Notre Dame ranks just 77th. So let’s take a closer look at the Irish ahead of Sunday’s second-round showdown. Then, after a loss to Duke, ND would reel off wins in seven of eight games.
The Notre Dame basketball team has had an exciting season, but in the first two games of their NCAA Tournament slate, they have proven they belong.
Notre Dame has a rare blend of veterans surrounding a true star in true freshman Blake Wesley, and against Alabama, we saw Cormac Ryan put the team on his back. If the Irish are to make a significant run, they will have the tallest mountain to climb, but this roster is built to do just that. After the first two victories, they should have more than enough confidence to do just that.
Olivia Miles' triple-double in tournament debut powers Irish past Minutewomen.
Not to be outdone, Minutewomen graduate student forward Sam Been recorded a season-high 31 points in the loss. Another rebound and a third three-point assist to fellow freshman guard Sonia Citron (plus one final layup for good measure) brought Miles to her final stat-line of 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Dara Mabrey got the hot start rolling with a three-pointer just under 20 seconds into the contest, and the senior guard followed that with another long-range bomb within the game’s first minute. The third period saw an ugly start for both teams as it took nearly two minutes until UMass broke the scoring lid with a layup. And then, the show really began. (The only downsides of the first quarter were that the preceding Oregon-Belmont game on ESPN2 went to double overtime and watchespn.com is an utterly useless website; relatedly, the Bleacher Report app and its play-by-play list are a godsend).

Notre Dame guard Cormac Ryan is balling out of his mind, shooting 7-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 beyond the arc for 18 points. Notre Dame is shooting 59% from the field and Alabama shooting 43%. The Irish's (23-10 overall, 3rd in ACC) scrappy play in second half of Wednesday's First Four round helped them eek past Rutgers, 89-87. Side note: Cormac Ryan is holding it down for the Irish offense. Notre Dame went into the locker room with a slight edge over Alabama, 35-31. But Alabama answers with a Juwan Gary three.

I think she’s focused on trying to win and lead her team, and so am I.”But both will be watching, hoping and praying they can extend their seasons another day, another weekend, another month because that’s life in the Ivey League.“After the season, I’ll just have to take a week and celebrate it,” Niele Ivey said. From that point in middle school, Niele Ivey made sure she did everything in her power to get Jaden the right tools to succesfully pursue his goal.“I started exposing him to high-level training and better teams, so he could receive the best coaching and training around,” she said. And she was there again when her dejected son blamed himself for the championship game loss to Iowa on Sunday.Through it all, the postgame hugs and private conversations helped this basketball family cope with life’s larger lessons.“This is for real home,” Jaden Ivey said after a win last week in Indianapolis at the recently rebranded Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “Obviously my mom, she’s been here, played with the (WNBA’s Indiana) Fever, and as a young boy, I can remember coming here. But I had to trust the process and continue to work and talk about the vision.”Meanwhile, she knew Jaden was dealing with the tough transition from high school star to college newbie. It’s just a great atmosphere to be in.”In addition to the tears she recalls streaming down her son’s cheeks moments after coach Matt Painter offered him a scholarship, the first Jaden received, she also recalls exactly when she knew he was destined for a basketball career. “Obviously, we get to play the game we love and do it at a high level. The Crimson Tide beat Gonzaga … and lost to some of the worst teams in the SEC, like Georgia. College basketball's one-and-done nature in the NCAA Tournament ...
The Crimson Tide were in no position to make a deep tournament run. Oats is in his third season at Alabama. There was reason to believe that he and his team would achieve new heights after making the Sweet 16 last season. The most elite programs in the nation can attest to that. That was evident when Alabama lost in the first round of the SEC Tournament to Vanderbilt. That, along with what happened on Friday and the culmination of the regular season, seemed to send a clear message that Bama’s players were ready for the season to be over. Alabama’s basketball season ended in the worst way possible, and not simply because it ended with a first-round defeat. Oats is quick to note that Alabama made consecutive runs to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005-2006. Maybe Oats was trying to save some fan equity by saying that there was some success in a first-round loss. If Bama had the talent and wherewithal to beat some of the most talented teams in the nation, then why didn’t they have the same mentality against lesser opponents? Oats also pointed out that Alabama is the only team in the NCAA Tournament that has beaten two No. 1 seeds: the Zags and Baylor. In doing so, he was trying to defend his program. Kentucky is still a really good basketball team despite losing in the first round to Saint Peter’s. A hot team can eliminate most any opponent when it just takes one win to jettison a contender. However, Bama was a team that, despite its No. 6 seeding in the NCAA Tournament, seemed bound to disappoint. An early exit in the NCAA Tournament seemed like the most likely end to Bama’s season leading up to March.
No. 12 seed UMass goes for its sixth straight win on Saturday night when it takes on No. 5 seed Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
UMass slipped by Dayton two weeks ago 62-56 in the A-10 Tournament Championship game. Two of those losses were to No. 4 Louisville, but they were also upset by Florida State and then Miami in the ACC Tournament. The Minutemen won three games in three days to come away with the conference title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
