General manager Al Avila and the Detroit Tigers missed out on star shortstop Carlos Correa who signed with Minnesota, and fans should be irate.
Before the lockout, the Tigers reportedly offered a ten-year deal to Correa that guaranteed him $27.5 million per season with incentives that allowed for him to earn $37.5 million per season. The base salary of $27.5 million came in significantly lower than the deal Corey Seager signed with Texas. Still, if Correa finished in the top-five for MVP voting, he’d be rewarded with an extra $10 million per season, paying him significantly more than Seager. Also, let’s not forget Miguel Cabrera’s lucrative deal is set to come off the books following the 2023 season. Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila made a similar deal with Opening Day starter Eduardo Rodriquez. The left-hander signed a five-year deal on paper, but it also includes an opt-out following year two. For the Twins, this is a no-brainer. This was after Detroit Tigers manager A. J. Hinch sat down with his former player for lunch but claimed it wasn’t about business; it was on a personal level.
While many fans wonder why the Astros couldn't match the deal, John Granato of ESPN 97.5 reported that the organization "ghosted" Correa this past week.
The Astros also assigned a handful of prospects to the major-league club since Friday to play in spring training. To see that list, locate the Astros’ transaction page on their website. Lance McCullers Jr. posted a goodbye video to honor his friendship with the shortstop. I know he’s going to go out there, have a monster year and hopefully go back to free agency and achieve that goal of a 10-year deal.” The former Houston Astros‘ first-overall pick traveled Saturday to Fort Meyers, Florida, for a physical scheduled for Sunday, Nightengale reports. “He knew after the lockout it was going to be hard to get the years he wanted,” Maldonado told reporters.
Shortstop Carlos Correa and the Minnesota Twins are in agreement on a three-year, $105.3 million contract that includes opt-outs after the first two seasons ...
Correa became a free agent after rejecting the Astros' qualifying offer, worth $18.4 million. "If your best player is not a good leader, they can take you down the wrong road," Astros manager Dusty Baker said of Correa during the 2021 playoffs. Since Correa broke in for the Astros in 2015, he ranks sixth among all position players in WAR (34.1). For all his regular-season exploits, Correa has been even more accomplished during the postseason. Before the 2020 season, he told reporters, "When you analyze the games, we won fair and square. Houston lost more than 100 games each year from 2011-13, then won its first World Series title by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in 2017.

The details of the contract were confirmed by a personal familiar with the negotiations who was not authorized to discuss it publicly because it was pending a physical examination. Instead of landing the massive long-term deal that was once predicted for him, Correa agreed to join the rapidly rebuilding Twins on a three-year $105.3 million contract. Carlos Correa, the star shortstop who helped lead the Houston Astros to a now tainted 2017 World Series title, has found an unexpected home: the Minnesota Twins.
Shortstop takes a three-year, $105.3 million deal that allows him to be a free agent...
The Astros, conceivably, had a chance at a reunion if Correa would accept a shorter term deal. Corey Seager's 10-year, $325 million deal with Texas prior to the lockout established some sort of benchmark for Correa to reach. As far as the guys in this clubhouse, eyes are on opening day and moving forward with who we have here. Historically, the Astros are averse to these types of mega-deals. Correa is now the fourth-highest paid player in the sport, trailing pitchers Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole, another former Astro, as well as outfielder Mike Trout. Correa could be a free agent again as early as next season at age 28, perhaps still searching for the long-term deal he did not find this winter.
MLB source: Free agent shortstop Carlos Correa has reached an agreement with the Minnesota Twins (@Twins) on a three-year deal worth $105.3 million with opt ...
The terms of the deal are rather shocking, given that Correa’s prior asking price was reportedly upward of $300 million. It seems the Astros’ renewed pursuit of Correa was not terribly genuine, considering a bargain of a contract is what got him to sign with Minnesota. If it wasn’t already, Carlos Correa’s Astros tenure is now officially a thing of the past.
The Twins have pulled off the stunner off the offseason, signing the market's top free agent, Carlos Correa. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.
The magnitude of the pitching upgrades the Twins have up their sleeve will determine their fate in 2022, but if their shocking deal with Correa is any indicator, they’re far from done improving this roster. If he reaches even $240MM on a multi-year deal next winter, in advance of his age-28 season, or a $205MM+ deal after a 2023 opt-out, he’d come out ahead on the entire gambit. The talented nature of that group always created the possibility for a game of musical chairs that left one without the contract he sought, but few would have expected Correa to take a short-term deal. If the new offer followed suit in that regard, it’s possible that Correa simply felt that in order to accept a shorter-term deal than the 10-year pact he initially sought, he’d need the opportunity to take another bite at the free-agent apple sooner than later. It’s obviously possible that Correa struggles, gets injured or never reaches that same earning ceiling, but he’s known as a supremely confident player — a mentality that is underscored by taking a deal of this nature. The Twins have been tied to Athletics starters Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, but failing that, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey and general manager Thad Levine will need to seek some creative and under-the-radar options — particularly now that they’ve gone all-in on the 2022 season with this Correa deal. It’s not clear just how much latitude Falvey and Levine will have to further boost a payroll that now, with Correa’s addition, is at a projected $128.5MM — within a few million dollars of franchise-record territory. The Tigers, meanwhile, offered Correa a reported 10-year, $275MM deal with three opt-out clauses — although presumably not so early in the contract as the offer on which Correa ultimately landed. The Twins already ranked 12th in the Majors both in Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average in 2021, and Correa should boost both marks. However, the Twins idled for the early portion of the offseason and are now faced with a rotation that is still lacking and a free-agent market that has been largely picked over. However, he played in 148 games this past season and in 58 of 60 games during the shortened 2020 season. Correa has walked at a 10.8% clip and struck out in 20.5% of his plate appearances since debuting as a 20-year-old rookie, including career-best marks of 11.7% and 18.1%, respectively, this past season.
The Twins flipped Josh Donaldson to the Yankees and used their money to sign a superstar. What are we even doing here?
It’s a slap to the face for Yankees fans everywhere, regardless of how you feel about Correa personally after the sign-stealing scandal. It’s an annoying hypothetical because the Yankees have Scrooge McDuck-esque swimming pools of money in their metaphorical vaults, but whatever, we’re assuming it and playing a game with our old buddy, mathematics. I wasn’t happy about it, but it happens and I was prepared to be modestly hopeful about Kiner-Falefa at least shoring up the infield defense. His average annual value of $35.1 million will be larger than those estimates and there will be opt-outs, but the mere idea that Correa would decide to accept a deal so short-term was a long shot. It was fair to guess that given their comments, the Yankees were simply going to move forward with a stopgap instead of Correa or any of the others. That happened to me a few hours ago, but it was honestly nothing compared to the feeling I had about a minute later, when I picked up my phone to check the time in the dead of night and saw the following push notification:
Minnesota swoops in to sign the free-agent slugger 2 1/2 weeks before the start of the season.
Correa can opt out of the deal after each of the first two seasons, 2022 and 2023. First, they acquired infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and minor league pitcher Ronny Henriquez from the Rangers for catcher Mitch Garver. Then, they picked up right-hander Sonny Gray from the Reds for right-hander Chase Petty, their first-round draft pick in 2021. Jon Heyman of MLB Network noted that Correa passed the Angels' Anthony Rendon ($35 million). Berman reported in November that the Astros offered Correa $160 million over five years, a $32 million AAV. He slashed .279/.366/.485 (131 OPS+, 134 wRC+). Heyman noted that Correa has a career 1.205 OPS at Target Field, but that was in just 70 plate appearances and he won't be hitting against Twins pitching anymore. The deal is pending a physical. Finally, they sent Kiner-Falefa, third baseman Josh Donaldson and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Yankees for catcher Gary Sanchez and third baseman Gio Urshela. The Yankees took on all of Donaldson's contract (approximately $25 million AAV), which gave Minnesota more payroll space to go after Correa.
Correa finished fifth in AL MVP voting and won his first Gold Glove during the 2021 season when he hit 26 home runs with a 131 OPS+.
Houston will receive a compensatory pick in the 2022 draft, as they tendered the qualifying offer to Correa after the 2021 season. The Twins are also getting a proven October performer in Correa, who amassed 18 home runs, 59 RBIs and a .272/.344/.505 line in 79 postseason games for the Astros. But it seemed inevitable that he would leave Houston via free agency when he turned down a six-year, $120 million extension before the 2021 season. Correa was widely seen as the preeminent available free agent coming out of MLB’s lockout.

Correa has enjoyed great success in Minnesota as a visiting player, though. Six of those were negotiated by agent Scott Boras, at a total of $1.0173 billion. In addition to agreements for Correa and Castellanos, he negotiated contracts for Corey Seager ($325 million) and Marcus Semien ($175 million) with Texas, Kris Bryant with Colorado ($182 million) and Scherzer with the New York Mets ($130 million). Houston lost more than 100 games each year from 2011-13, then won its first World Series title by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in 2017. Minnesota has not been to the World Series since winning the 1991 title and has lost its last eight postseason series since beating Oakland in a 2002 AL Division Series. The Astros went on to AL pennants and World Series losses in 2019 and last year, gaining infamy for their cheating scandal that was revealed after the 2019 season.

At that point, the Twins will have a much better sense of what they have in Lewis and Martin, and their options at the position moving forward. Lewis is already on the 40-man roster, coming off two lost seasons, while Martin debuted as a professional in Double-A last season. The move marks the biggest commitment to a free agent in Twins history, surpassing the four-year, $92 million contract they gave Josh Donaldson two offseasons ago. Before this move, the Twins had a glaring vacancy at shortstop. Who could have imagined the path they'd take to get here in what has to stand as the craziest offseason in Twins history? The agreement was first reported by Mark Berman of FOX 26 Houston.

The Astros ultimately lose in seven games. July 17 — Correa undergoes surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. His 14 RBIs tie the franchise record for a single postseason. He also joins them as the third shortstop with 100-plus homers before age 25. He’s the second-youngest player in MLB history to do it at 21, behind only Atlanta’s Andruw Jones (19) in the 1996 World Series. Oct. 7 — As the playoffs begin, Astros owner Jim Crane says the team will be “in the mix” to keep Correa but acknowledges “dollars are a factor.” At 20, he becomes the youngest Astros position player to make his big league debut sinec Derrel Thomas in 1971. Jan. 10 — Correa and the Astros agree to a one-year deal for $8 million to avoid arbitration. Sept. 3 — Correa returns to the Astros’ lineup, going 1 for 3 with an RBI in an 8-6 home win over the Mets. Oct. 14 — Correa drives in both runs in the Astros’ 2-1 win over the Yankees in Game 2 of the ALCS, including the winning RBI double in the ninth inning. Oct. 12 — Correa homers twice in the Game 4 loss to the Royals in the ALDS, joining fellow Puerto Rico native Carlos Beltran as the only Astros to have a multi-homer game in the postseason. June 18 — Correa makes his pro debut for the Gulf Coast League Astros rookie team, going 1 for 5 in a 1-0, 13-inning victory over the Cardinals.
The star shortstop made an unexpected move last night when he agreed to an opt-out-laden, three-year, $105.3-million deal.
The Twins now have a chance to make a real impact in 2022, and there’s no single move they could have made to help their chances there as much as this one. Their situation was one that many teams have seemed content to punt on in recent years—dial down, retool, try to come back to contention with cheaper, younger pieces in a few seasons. The Twins would never have realistically gone for a big-money, long-term deal for Correa. But at this point in the offseason, it seemed as if he was opening himself up to more options, including for the short term. This deal simply gives him a bridge to get there—and, in the meantime, he’ll still be the highest-paid infielder in baseball by average annual value. (More on that below.) Which meant he suddenly made sense for the Twins: They were interested in complementing their smaller, shrewder moves with a big splash that would not have to come with a lengthy, uber-expensive commitment. So a move like this makes more sense: three years with two opt-outs, giving him a chance to hop back into free agency as soon as it makes sense but with the security that he does not have to do so after one season. (And if those caveats don’t apply in 2022, they seem likely to in 2023, making it somewhat improbable that Correa sticks in Minnesota until the end of the contract in 2024.) But it’s a situation that could work out well for both sides. But for a club that was not traditionally a big spender, with multiple areas of need to address, that seemed like a tall order for one offseason. And it could be an ideal situation both for the team, which has telegraphed its desire to win right now, and for the shortstop, who can test the waters again in free agency as soon as next year. They would need to make some clear upgrades if they wanted to rebound and contend in 2022. The timing was around 2 a.m. on Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla., the spring training home of the Twins, an early morning hour on the first weekend of March Madness, when baseball news had slowed to a crawl and fresh rumors had not surfaced in hours. Credit to Minnesota and Correa for making sure that it was so literally as well as spiritually.
