I was trying to move out of the way, but it was an accident. “The ball was going out of bounds, and I was trying to jump out of his way, but he was trying to catch me,” Samuels said. The freshman guard was seen not dressed in uniform and was reported to have a left knee injury. “We were just reading their ball screen coverage, and if they were coming to help, see who was helping,” Moore said of what allowed Villanova to unlock its offense. “I think we played great team defense, and it’s just going to prepare us for Sunday,” Villanova guard Collin Gillespie said. For Delaware, Jyare Davis paced the Blue Hens with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and six rebounds. Took us some time for us to figure that out too, and I think our guys did.” Then, they started the second half strong, with an 8-0 blitz to push their lead firmly into double digits, where it remained for the rest of the game. The Wildcats buried 13 three-pointers as a team, with five players contributing at least one basket from long range and a quartet of players connecting two or more times from beyond the arc. It was a balanced effort for the ‘Cats, with five different players scoring in double figures. “It took us some time to adjust to their speed and their intelligence, as we tried to figure out what they were doing,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. It was an ugly start for ‘Nova, who saw Delaware lead by as high as seven in a low-scoring start between both teams.

No. 15 seed Delaware looks to shock No. 2 seed Villanova on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats finished the season as hot as anyone in the country after starting just 7-4 and losing their first conference game. They won three games in three days after ending the regular season on a three-game losing streak that included losses to UNC Wilmington and Towson, both teams they beat in the conference tournament. The win against the Bluejays was the Wildcats' fifth straight and 10th in their last 11 games.

“Ever since I’ve been at the University of Delaware, Villanova has been the best program in college basketball,” Ingelsby said. This was a step-forward season for them, for Ingelsby as their coach: first conference-tournament championship, first NCAA Tournament berth, 22 victories, perhaps the seeds of sustained success planted. The outcome would be the outcome just the same, little more than a matter of time and Villanova playing as it usually does: hard and smart and so freaking tough. There was the six-minute stretch, from late in the first half to early in the second half, that broke the Blue Hens, a stretch they began down by four and in the game and ended down by 18 and out of hope. Then Delaware held a 15-8 lead eight-and-a-half minutes in, a wakeup for the Wildcats better than any warning Wright might have delivered. Soon enough, the lead was gone and, for the Blue Hens, the game, too. No, the bigger concerns were the toll that the Big East Tournament might have taken on his team and Delaware’s collective familiarity with the Wildcats, with their system and their players. The Blue Hens might lose, and they did. There was Jermaine Samuels hurling himself onto the Villanova bench to save a loose ball, accidentally elbowing assistant coach Dwayne Anderson in the face, leaving Anderson bloodied from a gash in his nose. They battled to the last second. There were the four off-the-dribble three-pointers that Collin Gillespie hit, each born of a pro-level move that he had clearly spent hours … days … weeks … honing until he could shoot that shot in his sleep. So: Blue Hens up, 23-22, still riding the wave of their Colonial Athletic Association championship, feeling confident, Jameer Nelson Jr. off on what looks like an easy breakaway dunk and a three-point lead and maybe some nervousness on the Main Line … except Brandon Slater chases him down, re-introduces himself to Nelson at the rim, and blocks the dunk.

BYU Women's Basketball earned a six-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and will face the Villanova Wildcats from the Big East Conference.
“All of the seniors that came back, we love this team and we obviously love college basketball. So I think it’s just the opportunity to keep playing with one another and keep playing college basketball. “It hasn’t been one or two players that totally dominate the ball or dominate everything. I think my players understand that a little bit, but they’re not going to put pressure on themselves to try to go out and do something great. Case in point by the seed they received in this NCAA Tournament. After a three-loss season, with two of those setbacks against single-digit NCAA Tournament teams, BYU only received a 6-seed and traveled two timezones away to Ann Arbor, Michigan. I love the underdog story, America loves the underdog story, so I’m excited to go in there and play like underdogs.” They’re just going to go out there and be themselves and play their game. I think what’s hard is in the West; we don’t get the recognition that a lot of players get. It’s the best seed in program history, but it shows that respect is not earned in the regular season. The respect from the nation is made in March. It’s one of the reasons why everyone from last year’s team that barely lost to national runner-up Arizona returned for another year. “All of the sacrifices that you make all summer and all during the year is to have the opportunity to be here. “I think the only thing that I can really say is just to kind of stay calm and play our game,” she said. We can’t let them get outside of what we try to do best, and that’s where the key is.” It’ll be a challenge, and we’re excited for it.” Last year we went through this, and they’re excited to really get going and playing,” Judkins said. So it has to be the one-and-done mentality of rebounding the basketball.” They’re very deliberate and not incredibly quick in what they do, but we kind of try to play the same way, so I think it should be interesting to see that.” We haven’t played against many teams like that this year, so I’m super excited to be able to play kind of like ourselves in that aspect.” We’ve been watching a lot of film, and our coaches have a really good game plan for us.” And then the same thing, playing just like help the helper, crowd the paint, make sure they’re not getting easy layups, pretty much the same thing we’ve been doing all year.” I think a team that we play a lot that reminded me kind of BYU was Creighton,” she said. “Obviously they have the second leading scorer in the nation, so yeah, doing a lot of scout and defense to kind of break that down and stop different looks. I think we have three or four players that have had to guard somewhat players like this and they can match up and find out real quick.
The Wildcats are the No. 11 seed in the Wichita Regional, taking on the sixth-seeded Cougars.
The Wildcats’ young roster will look to slow down the game and feed Siegrist. But Siegrist isn’t the reason they beat then-No. 8 UConn in February or ended the season as one of the hottest teams in the country. Between No. 11 seed Villanova and its first tournament win since 2018 is No. 6 seed BYU, the regular-season West Coast Conference champion. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Getting into the NCAA Tournament wasn’t a sure thing for the Villanova women’s team.
Blue Hens have promising future with Davis, Carr and Nelson back, but becoming better beyond arc would be beneficial.
You want to do a really good job guarding the line and trying to take it away. We didn't do a good enough job to keep kind of us in the game.” The Wildcats have won 12 of those games. “I thought we did a really good job guarding for 25 seconds, and then they made some very timely threes,” Ingelsby said. And with 13 teams in the league next season because of expansion, more schools will have to play an extra tournament game, making finishing higher even more critical. “I think a lot of people are interested,” Ingelsby said. Naturally, it was Delaware’s defensive focus in preparation. “And then we had a couple breakdowns, and they make you pay. “[Connor] Gillespie makes a step-back one, [Caleb] Daniels had one that bounced in, hit the front of the rim and bounced in at the end of the first half. “I think we’re really just getting started here. Villanova will be tested with that scenario in the coming weeks or even this weekend. In the end, the lack of size and depth don’t sting Villanova like it would other teams. Despite how many high-quality 3-point shots the Wildcats take, it’s going to be tough to get past that number with so few possessions. But I also don’t foresee Delaware trading interior offense for perimeter defense. Samuels is forced to play a variety of positions and roles, using his athleticism and experience to make up for any shortcomings. Don’t get me wrong: Villanova is still a very good basketball team.
