Freshman Caleb Furst Finds Success in First NCAA Tournament Game for Purdue Basketball (unknown)

* PURDUE STEAMROLLS YALE, 78-56: Purdue basketball got past Yale on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, led by Jaden Ivey's game-high 22 points. "Caleb hasn't played in some games because of matchups and it will continue to go down that road," Painter said. "Every game is different depending on the personnel that the other team has, but (Painter) talks a lot about how you gotta be ready no matter what the situation is, whenever your number is called," Furst said. But he kept his game simple, took open shots as they came and distributed the basketball to his teammates. When he comes in there, he's got to play off of those guys and be able to make plays and rebound. He did just that, settling into the game and contributing 10 points in 21 minutes during the 78-56 victory.

3 seed Purdue dominated in Milwaukee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 2022.

So it wasn’t much of a surprise that they went back to Stefanovic in the second half, and in the span of about a minute of game time, Sasha finally saw the ball go in the hoop. His arm stretched and his hand reached up a good 11 feet in the air and the too bright orange ball attempting to go over his head was batted up. The career 39% three point shooter went 0 for 5 in the first half. He missed from the right wing, the left wing, and finally from straight on where his shot barely careened off the right of the rim. But it was true freshman Caleb Furst’s offensive explosion and spark that helped Purdue pull away mid way through the first half. Early in the first half, Yale was attempting to inbound the ball from their own baseline.

The Moment is Here (unknown)

Since the moment North Texas finished its upset of Purdue in last year's NCAA Tournament we have been waiting for right now. With virtually the entire roster ...

There were way-too-close wins over Ohio State, Maryland, and Indiana in Mackey. There was the indignity of a loss to the Hoosiers, the first for any player on the current roster, and one that not only also cost us a a Big Ten title, but actually put them in the NCAA Tournament. They have the scary names of Marcus Carr and Chris Beard. They have a couple of memorable non-conference victories over us that Sasha Stefanovic, Trevion Williams, and Eric Hunter Jr. have been around for. It could have been dicey, but Purdue was in control throughout and trailed for all of 16 seconds before taking full control. What followed was a loss to Rutgers on a miracle heave that, in the end, cost us a Big Ten title. For the first time ever Purdue ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll. When we beat Iowa that previous week Mackey was rapturous because we knew an ascent to No. 1 was likely. Since the moment North Texas finished its upset of Purdue in last year’s NCAA Tournament we have been waiting for right now.

What Purdue basketball fans should know about Texas (unknown)

The No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers will play No. 6 seed Texas in NCAA Tournament second-round action on Sunday, March 20, 2022.

Andrew Jones (6-3 senior) adds 10.7 points and 54 3-pointers. The Longhorns own victories over Kansas and Tennessee. Texas made better than 50% of its 3s.

Players to watch, keys, prediction in NCAA tournament (unknown)

The Longhorns are one of the top defensive teams in the country and will look to slow down Jaden Ivey and Zach Edey. Mike Carmin.

Beard knows defense and will have his players dialed in to slow down Purdue. The Boilermakers must counter with good ball movement, stay strong on the boards, and use their transition game to find easy baskets. It’s the only third game this season the Longhorns have made double-digit 3-pointers, but the Boilermakers can’t let Jones enjoy another big game. The Boilermakers made it through the first-round game without any issues but now the real tournament begins. They’ll be looking to force Edey to pass from the low block and not control the paint. This has happened before, and the Boilermakers didn’t react well. Jaden Ivey: The Boilermakers need a big game out of their sophomore star, but he also needs to play under control. After last season, the former standout guard at Minnesota left the Golden Gophers and landed in Austin. He’s not putting up the big numbers as he did in Minneapolis since the roster is filled with transfers. The last time he faced Purdue, which came during the 2020-21 season, Carr hit the game-winning basket with 14 seconds to play. Purdue needs its top 3-point shooter to be productive in this game. Series: Texas leads 4-1, including two wins in the NCAA tournament. Ivey can’t have unforced turnovers – and that includes quick shots – for Purdue to challenge the Longhorns’ defense. What’s the counter?

MARCH MADNESS LIVE: Purdue throttles Yale in NCAA ... (The Indianapolis Star)

The East No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers take on the No. 14 seed Yale Bulldogs in Milwaukee in NCAA Tournament first-round action.

Jaden Ivey has 16 points, Zach Edey 7, and Eric Hunter Jr. and Trevion Williams 4 each. The Boilermakers lead Yale 59-39 after a pair of Sasha Stefanovic 3-pointers, his first points of the game. The Bulldogs are shooting 46%. The Boilermakers are shooting 56% and have committed just 4 turnovers. Azar Swain and Jalen Gabbidon lead the Bulldogs. Jaden Ivey, Zach Edey and Trevion Williams lead the Boilermakers.

When Jaden Ivey is comfortable, Purdue can make deep run (unknown)

Ivey and Zach Edey combined for 38 points as Purdue ran away from Yale in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.

But coach Matt Painter needed to see Stefanovic establish a shooting rhythm from the perimeter. Granted, the performance came against an Ivy League team, which didn’t have the size or quickness to match Purdue’s top two players. I always watch whoever I’m going to guard in warmups just to see how they’re feeling about themselves. He screams, similar to when he scored a layup and was fouled early in the matchup against Yale. Those two 3-pointers led to a game-high 22 points as the third-seeded Boilermakers rolled past No. 14 seed Yale 78-56 at Fiserv Forum, advancing to Sunday’s second round against either Texas. “If I don’t get it right the first time, I’m not leaving until I get it,” Ivey said earlier this week. I got to keep sticking with that.” “Other than Yao Ming (7-foot-6), I've seen nobody as big as he is. Purdue hasn’t enjoyed a blowout victory since cruising past Minnesota on Feb. 2 in Minneapolis. It’s more of a throwback shirt, one you would see during a summer pickup game. I don’t miss days after practice. “I commend him and his patience and how he is with me on the court.

Sasha Stefanovic breaks out of shooting slump vs. Yale. That's a good sign for Purdue. (unknown)

After suffering through a 3-of-20 slump from behind the arc, Sasha Stefanovic saw a few 3s fall. The Boilers hope it jumpstarts the sharpshooter.

"I think from an execution standpoint, we do everything that we want to do," Stefanovic said. Stefanovic shot a respectable 2-of-5 (40%) against Michigan State but his teammates shouldered most of the offensive load with five Boilermakers reaching double figures in the semifinal win. Having Stefanovic play with confidence will be key if Purdue wants to make a deep tournament run. It's good to see them finally go in, but I wish some of them also went in there early in the first half as well. "Obviously I've been in a little bit of a slump lately with my shooting, but yeah, I'm going to continue to shoot. The trey forced a Yale timeout, and Stefanovic did not hide his emotion after putting an exclamation point on an 11-0 run.

Many still believe that this team has the size and shooting that could carry it to the Final Four, and potentially, its first national championship win under its eight-year coach, Bruce Pearl. The fourth play-in winner, Texas Southern, went back to Texas — and then home for good after losing 83-56 to Kansas. The Tigers did it by tightening up their defense, anchored by the 7-foot-1 forward/center Walker Kessler, a finalist for the Naismith Men’s Defensive Player of the Year award. He was, after all, the lifeline of the Blue Devils’ offense all season, a 6-foot-10 freshman who can vex defenders from the midrange and in the post. Illinois trailed by as many as 14 points before it summoned enough offensive grit to advance to the second round and deny Chattanooga what would have been its first N.C.A.A. tournament victory in a quarter of a century. With five minutes left, Duke’s lead had grown back to 15 and an on-court dance battle between the teams’ two mascots during a timeout seemed like the more intense contest. The Blue Devils scored 40 points in the paint, and Williams finished with 15 points, making six of his seven shots. Duke committed seven turnovers in the first half, leading to 12 Titans points and allowing them keep things relatively close. Banchero, however, like the majority of the Blue Devils roster, has little tournament experience — a clear juxtaposition to its veteran head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in men’s college basketball. They haven’t reached the Final Four since 1980, and their latest near miss was excruciating, an overtime defeat in 2019 to Virginia, the eventual champion. Beard will have less time to prepare his team for Sunday, but the Longhorns showed what their defense was capable of when they clogged up Virginia Tech’s freewheeling offense in an 81-73 victory. What makes Purdue unique is Edey, a sophomore from Toronto who is not only the tallest player in college basketball but at 295 pounds something of an immovable object.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: At halftime, No. 3 Purdue leads No. 14 Yale ... (Yale Daily News)

Purdue guard Jaden Ivey leads all scorers with 18 points, as the Boilermakers drew fouls inside and outscored Yale in the paint to build their advantage.

Edey, who finished the season with the best offensive-rebounding percentage in the sport, had seven rebounds in the first half. Drilling two early three-pointers, he helped the Boilermakers to an 11–8 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulldogs were led by 13 points from guard Azar Swain ’22 and efficient bursts of offense from forward Matt Knowling ’24 and guard August Mahoney ’24 later in the half. Ivey scored 18 points, most of them early in the half, as Purdue leaned on its interior size advantage to draw fouls and outscore the Elis in the paint, 20–8. Forward Jake Lanford ’23, who has appeared in just four games this season and is not typically in the rotation, was Yale’s first substitution off the bench. Purdue guard Jaden Ivey, a projected top-five pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, led the Boilermakers in the first half.

They also shot just 8 for 32 from the field in the second half. I thought that was the key to the game right there.” Gabbidon’s driving layup got Yale within nine early in the second half, but the Boilermakers responded with a 17-2 run. That’s when Ivey and the Boilermakers started to take over. Led by Ivey and Edey, No. 3 seed Purdue (28-7) won its NCAA opener for the fourth time in its last five tournaments. Here's What Coach Matt Painter Said After Purdue's NCAA ... (CalBearsMaven)

Purdue basketball defeated Yale 78-56 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Here's everything coach Matt Painter had to say during the postgame press ...

You've got to go out there and play better than the people in front of you, and today we were able to do that. Sometimes when you lose, you look at it like it's a total negative and it wasn't. We got into overtime in that game and they played better than us. They have good players, they have a good coach and you have to be prepared. In the second half I thought we did a much better job. He got going early in the game and then after that we did a much better job on him. How much of advantage do you think that is with a relatively short turnaround for preparing for those guys which are obviously really difficult to prepare for in general? Obviously they struggled shooting the basketball, and we wanted to give a lot of time and effort into Swain because we knew that he was dangerous and a guy that could get 30. You're going to have a period of time during the season where you go through a little bit of struggles and you've just got to keep working your way through it and keep taking good shots and that's what he did. Then as the second half progressed, thought our guys did a much better job of challenging them at the rim and the paint when the ball got in there in the first half. We had the opportunity to play a lot of people and get out there and get some experience and getting into this tournament. It was good to see Caleb. Caleb hasn't played in some games because of matchups and we'll continue to go down that road just trying to -- when you have 10 guys you feel good about, sometimes later in the year you get to an 8 or 9-man rotation and it leaves a guy out. PAINTER: Yeah, obviously I thought our guys did a good job start of the second half getting off to a good start.

Texas vs. Purdue NCAA Basketball Preview and Prediction (Heartland College Sports)

Here is everything you need to know about the Texas Longhorns and the Purdue Boilermakers in our Texas vs. Purdue NCAA Tournament men's basketball preview.

Purdue is also making its seventh straight appearance in the Big Dance but is trying to get back the Final Four for the first time since 1980. Purdue spent the entire season in the AP Top 10 and is a Top 5 seed in the tourney for the fifth straight season. Texas: The Longhorns are making the most of their first NCAA Tournament run under head coach Chris Beard, ending their eight-year run without an NCAA Tournament victory. But, head coach Matt Painter can also be accused of under-performing in March. During this streak the Boilermakers have made the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once, and while that’s difficult, the Boilermakers have aspirations of making it to the Final Four soon. Purdue 71, Texas 65. He’s a First-Team All-American (NABC), Second-Team All-American (AP, Sporting News), First-Team All-Big Ten (Media, Coaches, AP), First-Team NABC All-District, Big Ten All-Tournament team and a finalist for both the Wooden and West awards. Texas G Andrew Jones: Andrew Jones, the holdover sixth-year guard, had a huge first half for Texas, as the Longhorns built a 34-32 lead against Virginia Tech. Jones finished the first half with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including five 3-pointers, the last of which came in the final seconds to give Texas, momentarily, the lead. After the Yale game he’s averaging 17.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Purdue F Jaden Ivey: The sophomore is the fourth All-American for Purdue in the last seven seasons. Purdue NCAA Tournament men’s basketball preview. Jones ended up with 21 points, the last of which came on a thunderous dunk late that basically put the game away. He had 22 points, four rebounds and an assist against Yale. But he’s had bigger games this season.

Purdue vs. Texas odds, picks for NCAA Tournament Second Round ... (The Athletic)

See odds, expert picks, tipoff time and more for Sunday's second round NCAA Tournament game between Purdue and Texas.

The money shifted slightly in favor of Texas heading in, as it closed as 1.5-point favorite. How they come out against Ivey and Edey will be the story Sunday. On the year, they rank 255th among Division I men’s teams in 3-point percentage, shooting 32.3 percent from downtown. Sophomore Jaden Ivey, a likely top-three pick in the upcoming draft, led the way for the Boilermakers with 22 points and four rebounds on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Purdue’s offense averages 79.8 points per game – 13th in the country – but their adjusted offensive efficiency numbers rank first (122) in the country, so it was no surprise to see them show up in a big way. Texas is a bad 3-point shooting team.
