3 takeaways from first-round win over Davidson (unknown)

Michigan State basketball and Davidson battled back and forth but ultimately the Spartans came out on top. What did we learn?

He was an offensive threat and made some big shots down the stretch to make sure the Spartans were able to overcome Davidson. After having his best game as a Spartan in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in which he had 17 points, 10 assists, and no turnovers, he stepped up to score 14, three rebounds, and two assists with two turnovers. Down five points late in the second half, Michigan State basketball needed a run to really put Davidson away and the Spartans did just that, going on a 10-0 run which essentially put the game out of reach.

Michigan State basketball vs. Duke: Tom Izzo, Coach K meet one ... (Detroit Free Press)

For 27 years, Tom Izzo points to Mike Krzyzewski's Duke as the hallmark of consistency and benchmark for Michigan State Spartans to emulate.

“Now preparing (for Sunday), there is nothing — nothing — that I enjoy more than trying not to sleep after a big game and go home and work all night. We played a great team, and we found a way to win. MSU is 4-13 all-time against Duke, with Izzo 3-12 as a head coach against Krzyzewski — his only other win aside from the 2019 postseason and Dec. 1, 2020 victories came during the 2005 NCAA tournament, another Final Four trip. It is Izzo’s 24th consecutive NCAA appearance, the second-longest active streak and tied for third-longest in Division I history with Duke’s streak that ended last year. “Mike and I are pretty good friends. The Blue Devils exacted a measure of revenge the next season with a convincing 87-75 early season win in East Lansing, before the pandemic wiped out the 2020 postseason. “I think it's really helped my program that … I found a way to schedule Duke probably more than a lot of people in nonconference,” Izzo said early Saturday morning. “Relax has not been there since June, which is fine,” Krzyzewski said. Last year was just a lost year for us.” We're excited and proud of the fact that we're going to play on Sunday. So you get reenergized.” “It is a long time,” Krzyzewski said Friday. “That team that we had when the pandemic hit was a team that I thought had a chance to go deep. “So I'm looking forward to it in a lot of ways, not when I look at the record (vs. Duke). But when I look at the coach, the team and the position we're in, it should be a great day for college basketball.”

Michigan State seniors come through, ensure Spartans will see ... (Lansing State Journal)

MSU's senior class refused to lose Friday, combining for 45 points to lift the team to a win over Davidson in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The past three weeks, Izzo said he's seen "a different Joey." Izzo partially attributed it to Hauser finally feeling comfortable and confident in his own skin — and in his game. "If you knew how we as a staff and our players feel about Foster Loyer, when I say we love the kid, we love the kid. "So many people jumped off his bandwagon, and as you guys know, I never did," Izzo said. "Looking forward to the next game." As soon as the NCAA released this year's bracket, the overarching storyline centered around Loyer facing his former team. His older brother, Sam, went 0-3, losing a pair of games at Marquette before transferring to Virginia and bowing out to Ohio in the first round of last year's tournament. For them, stepping up big in (today's) game, a tournament game, I know it means the world to them to be in that spot now — (and for) me as well, just helping them out." Joey, himself, was 0-2 before Friday. He was at Marquette for the second of his brother's two setbacks, then suffered another defeat last season after moving to Michigan State, as the Spartans squandered a 14-point lead against UCLA and fell in the First Four in West Lafayette, Indiana. Neither brother had an opportunity to compete in 2020, as the coronavirus canceled the tournament. Hyunjung entered Friday having posted a double-figure point total in 29 of the Wildcats' 33 games. Thanks to stellar efforts from all three members of the class — Joey Hauser, Gabe Brown and Marcus Bingham Jr. — the Spartans will live to see another day. Tonight I let that happen, and good things happened." "It's a new season," said Hauser, who also had eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Duke, Michigan State Gearing Up for Coaching Collision Course (unknown)

Both Tom Izzo and Coach K's squads are ready for the second-round clash of Hall of Fame coaches.

“The season is so long, and they are a young group, so what they accomplished and won the regular season I thought they took a deep breath. That good fortune trickled down to guard A. J. Hoggard and forward Gabe Brown, who combined for 26 points in the win. “We’re gonna watch film and get better.” “Communicating and making all the right rotations; that’s huge for us.” Duke made adjustments in the second half, limiting miscues with better communication, fighting through screens and hustling to loose rebounds. One more time to play against maybe the all-time great.”

We stayed in the center ring and we kept fighting. Davidson was left staggered and MSU pounced to deliver the sealing blow. We stayed in the center ring and we kept fighting. This time, Hoggard came to a jump stop underneath the basket with Brajkovic looming over him and swung the ball under the Austrian’s arm to Brown in the corner, who drilled the three to give MSU the lead. “I was just trying to be aggressive and help towards our run,” Hoggard said. After the second layup, Hoggard took the inbounds pass coast-to-coast in seven seconds and finished another contested layup to make it a one-possession game.

See odds, expert picks, and TV channel for Duke vs. Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The weight of playing for Coach K in his final tournament run could explain Duke’s uncharacteristic showings in the regular-season finale and ACC Championship. Michigan State struggled in conference play and barely eked out a 74-73 win against No. 10 Davidson in the first round. Michigan State knows it can spread the ball around, with five players that averaged eight points or more in the regular season. Michigan State and Duke have been doing this dance for decades under Izzo and Krzyzewski, 151 tournament wins between them and five head-to-head matchups on the books. For example, in the first round? There will be palatable pressure on both sides of this game.

Joey Hauser's breakout game was 3 years in the making for ... (Detroit Free Press)

Michigan State basketball's Joey Hauser is starting to play like the versatile scoring forward we heard about three years ago in the NCAA tournament.

It could be the end is near, so it makes you feel a different way. The leap from a few hopeful moments last week to what he did Friday night was still an enormous one, and certainly unexpected. Duke is the favorite. But that he wanted the shot. Not that he made the shot — he's always been able to shoot. On that night, though, Max Christie was the story. A.J. Hoggard was the story, both for good reasons. You could see it in his body language after a missed shot or defensive assignment. The weight crushed his spirit, his confidence, too. Think, instead, of the late-career arcs of so many of Izzo’s best performers. It led to hesitant play, second-guessing, uncertain jump shots and passes thrown a second too late. These were the descriptions we heard, anyway.
