It took them to the NCAA tournament. Iowa State shouldn’t be here. Iowa State basketball had its golden era from 2011 to 2017. Then the coaching staff took that roster and asked them to play ugly. “All the credit goes to the young men in our program for how they bought into the work habits,” Otzelberger said. When you try to build back after a historically awful season, patience is what pays the bills.

Once again, LSU’s defensive finished the half well, holding Iowa State without a field goal for a span of 5:26. LSU answered with a 10-1 run of its own to cut the Cyclones advantage to 51-50 with 2:13 to play. In its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance, LSU (22-12) saw its 2021-22 season come to an end. After falling behind by 12 with 6:37 to play in the half, LSU held the Cyclones scoreless for the duration of the period. Eason and the freshmen, Brandon Murray and Efton Reid, combined to score seven points in the opening 20 minutes. With its offense in a rut, LSU's defense kept it in the game. LSU struggled to move the ball and force Iowa State's defense into rotations. Iowa State shot a bit better, especially toward the middle third of the half, but did not score for the final 6:37 before intermission. The sixth-seeded Tigers failed to generate consistent offense, shooting just 37% overall and 21% from three-point range. Tyrese Hunter was the Cyclones' leading scorer with 23 points.

Instant takeaways: LSU exits NCAA Tournament with loss to Iowa ... (LSU Wire)

A tough week came to a tough end for LSU on Friday night, as it was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by the Cyclones.

It’s yet another thing that’s kept the Tigers from being consistent and playing a complete game throughout the year. LSU has been a one or two-man show for most of the year. That being said, the job Nickelberry did was admirable and that team played hard for him on Friday. Offense was LSU’s Achilles’ heel all year, and it did the Tigers in on Friday night. It’s just that game is usually not the first game of the NCAA Tournament. Despite that, and only scoring 19 points, LSU was only down five at the half.

With a nearly six minute long field goal drought brewing and clinging to a one-point lead, the man of the hour in Hunter hit yet another triple to keep the Tigers at bay with under two minutes to play. Hunter had been the man of the hour all night, and was simply unafraid of the moment. Brockington then followed up with a jumper, and the crowd rose to their feet. Hunter made a three-pointer to kickstart the Cyclones in the second half, but LSU ran off five quick points to get within three. Following the break, Brockington canned a corner jumper, and shook his head afterwards, much to the delight of the crowd. When all was said and done, it was a freshman that led the Cyclones, and was not quite ready to put this season behind.

Latest odds on Tigers vs Cyclones, why two teams feel evenly matched in first round matchup.

It's why this has the chance to be a very exciting game down the stretch which should be nothing new for the purple and gold. Far too often this season, LSU has lost momentum down the stretch and it's proved costly at times. For LSU to advance, it will need to turn its defense into offense, something this group has done well in stretches, including at the tail end of the regular season.

Peterson: Tyrese Hunter's NCAA Tournament brilliance silences ... (desmoinesregister.com)

Tyrese Hunter was spectacular in Iowa State basketball's NCAA Tournament win against LSU on Friday in Wisconsin.

Iowa State columnist Randy Peterson embarked on his 50th year of writing sports for the Des Moines Register in December 2021. The Tigers closed within 36-35, but Caleb Grill came to Iowa State’s rescue — first with a three-pointer deep in the corner, then with a steal and dunk. Iowa State missed its last eight shots of the half, yet led 25-19. Iowa State broke its nasty habit of trailing significantly early in recent games. And to you who thought the Cyclones couldn’t win big with a true freshman running the show? Hunter was cold as ice with 19 seconds remaining, his 3-point swisher just before the shot clock expired.

Guard play is paramount in the tournament and Iowa State’s got a pretty good one in Izaiah Brockington. He too is a senior transfer—because Iowa State and LSU don’t have enough similarities—finding his way to Ames via Penn State and St. Bonaventure prior to that. But the biggest advantage for LSU might be the littlest thing: free throws. Poseur alluded to it yesterday but it’s eerie how similar LSU and Iowa State are statistically. But the Cyclones struggled in conference play going 7-11 and went out with a whimper against Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament, 72-41. Now the Big Easy plays host to the men’s Final Four and LSU earned the right to find its way back home. Heck Iowa State had a more impressive showing in non-conference play beating three Tournament teams: Iowa, Creighton, and Memphis.

Peterson: Iowa State's inside scoop on The Shot heard throughout ... (desmoinesregister.com)

Tyrese Hunter's three-point basket from darn near the logos was the dagger that put surprising Iowa State into the NCAA Tournament's second round.

He put his team in a position to win, and they put the ball in his hand. “Like coach (Kevin Nickleberry) said, 'Big players make big plays,' and down the stretch he made big plays. I got the shots presented to me, and I just let them fly.” “As soon as Jaz came in, we have a term in our program, "instant impact," and you could feel that impact immediately,” Otzelberger said. For Caleb, he's a very effort-based player, he cares, and he wants to win. “We knew we were going to have to make a lot of them. Twenty-one victories for the team coaches unanimously picked to finish last in the Big 12 Conference. “I looked at (the shot clock) the whole possession,” Hunter said. He joined Golden State Warriors Steph Curry as the only two players in NCAA Tournament history with seven or more 3-point baskets, and five or more steals in a game. I shot the ball confidently.” He did his thing with the second-most 3-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game by an Iowa State player. That’s a savvy plan for anyone in the waning seconds during a game of this stature.

Iowa State men’s basketball Q&A (unknown)

Our pals from Wide Right & Natty Lite answered our questions ahead of Sunday's second round matchup.

If he has a big game and coupled with some big shots from Izaiah Brockington, Iowa State should be in a good position on Sunday night to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. I am kind of expecting another big game from Hunter and, much unlike Aaron Rodgers, Hunter is in his home state and playing in front of his friends and family and he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. If he finds a rhythm he can shoot lights out and he sometimes has been an X-factor for Iowa State. He has been extremely cold over the last four games so maybe it’s time to fire up is one game that he goes off for 20 points. They have bought into the system that Otzelberger has installed defensively and they just work together to get it done. As for stopping him, and this kind of goes for the whole team, pressure and in your face for 40 minutes. Got to the NCAA tourney and won in the first round.
