Coach K is dominant vs. Tom Izzo -- but Izzo seldom loses on two-day turnarounds in the NCAAs so something's got to give on Sunday.
"I'm looking forward to it in a lot of ways," Izzo said. Two bedrock programs of the sport, two pillars of coaching, plenty of talent on the floor, so let's have one more go of it. It was great to be back in the tournament. He's been the model of consistency." Coach K has, in many ways, set the standard for excellence in the sport over the past 35 years, while Izzo has been as successful in March as almost anyone over the past 25. "I was concerned about how nervous our guys would be," Krzyzewski said. It's been a game I respect. "But every time we've played, it's been a game I look forward to. "There's no question that that's been the best program, the most consistent program for 30 years." For as infamous a record as Izzo has against K, he seldom loses on a two-day turnaround/one day of prep in the NCAA Tournament. In fact, get a load of this: In 1999, Izzo was a year away from winning his first (and to this point only) national championship. Izzo with one final victorious saunter through the handshake line, or will Izzo add to his stuffed cupboard of memorable March victories?
Duke Blue Devils advanced in NCAA tournament Friday with win vs Cal State Fullerton. Duke basketball will face Michigan State Spartans or Davidson Wildcat ...
But the Blue Devils gave the Titans a bit of hope. But, when Duke’s defense allowed gaps, the Titans struck back again, scoring eight consecutive points on two layups and jumpers in the lane. Griffin hit a pair of 3-pointers during the flurry. After Fullerton had hit just 3 of its first 17 shots, the Blue Devils turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions. Paolo Banchero scored 17 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils in both categories. Mark Williams, Duke’s 7-1 sophomore center, scored 15 points and blocked five shots as the Blue Devils swatted away a season-high 10 shots.

In what Michigan State's Tom Izzo dubbed "a great day for college basketball," he and the Spartans will take on Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils in ...
When I got the job and won the national championship in five years and people were ready to canonize you, at least for a year or two, I said come back in 10 years and then 15 and for him it's been 42 years of consistency. Izzo and Krzyzewski have matched up often over the years, both in the NCAA tournament and the regular season. Izzo is 3-12 against Krzyzewski in his career and 2-3 in the NCAA tournament. The two coaches have combined for 151 NCAA tournament wins, with Krzyzewski's 98 wins the most all time and Izzo's 53 fifth most. But to Izzo, Duke has been the model of consistency during Krzyzewski's 42 years as coach. Duke versus Michigan State has become a high point when it happens in the regular season and a must-watch game during NCAA tournaments.
The Blue Devils advance to the second round in the 36th and final NCAA tournament for Coach K.
They had one built-in advantage from the start, those sequoias in the middle to put the trembles into some of the shots. “If there’s some way in the future they could change that,” Krzyzewski said in this last of his 36 NCAA tournaments. The half-full crowd gave Krzyzewski a big cheer upon his pregame introduction. Then the coach saw that things had gotten better lately. They played really hard. With Williams at 7-foot-1 and Banchero at 6-10, a Titans team that looked beautifully coached found resistance even after its beautifully crafted plays yielded the kinds of shots a coach might draw up.
Audi Field Details Saturday's Capitol Classic Lacrosse Tournament features three games. Catholic and Hampden-Sydney square off the opening contest at noon.
Both Tom Izzo and Coach K's squads are ready for the second-round clash of Hall of Fame coaches.
“The season is so long, and they are a young group, so what they accomplished and won the regular season I thought they took a deep breath. That good fortune trickled down to guard A. J. Hoggard and forward Gabe Brown, who combined for 26 points in the win. “We’re gonna watch film and get better.” “Communicating and making all the right rotations; that’s huge for us.” Duke made adjustments in the second half, limiting miscues with better communication, fighting through screens and hustling to loose rebounds. One more time to play against maybe the all-time great.”

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Duke began retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski's final NCAA...
His team didn't look intimidated, but it couldn't knock down the open shots it got while struggling to handle some of Duke's size and length. There were some positive signs, namely 10 blocked shots — five by the 7-foot-1 Williams. Duke's first basket came on a smooth passing sequence that saw Banchero find Wendell Moore Jr., who flipped it to Mark Williams nearby for the dunk. Moore followed with a 3 of his own off a kickout from Williams, good for a crisp 13-2 game-opening flurry. The Blue Devils suffered a dispiriting loss to rival North Carolina in Krzyzewski’s emotional final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium and fell last weekend to Virginia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championship game. Damari Milstead scored 12 points to lead 15th-seeded Titans (21-11), who missed 15 of 18 shots to open the game and struggled to get into a comfortable rhythm. Duke has long begun its postseason runs with added attention as a blueblood program with five NCAA titles. Freshman Paolo Banchero scored 17 points to lead the Blue Devils (29-6), who jumped to a double-digit lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes and remained in control throughout. Next up: Michigan State or Davidson in Sunday's second round. The Blue Devils advance to the second round and will face the winner of Friday night's game between No. 7 Michigan State and No. 10 Davidson.
Only one substantial contributor, senior guard Joey Baker, had played in a tournament game before Friday night, while five of the Blue Devils’ six leading scorers during the regular season were freshmen or sophomores. The Titans hit on just 37.5% of attempts. Up 37-27 at the break, Duke held a double-digit advantage for the game's final 19 minutes, leading by as many as 20 points with 12 minutes left.
CS Fullerton's loss to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament can be summed up with these three takeaways.
"I thought the shots that we got, even in the timeouts, I said to the guys, 'The shots we're getting are good shots,' " Taylor said. The Titans trimmed a 14-point deficit by going on a 8-0 run. Some sequences sparked momentum that gave the Titans life in the first half. Not only is it two points, but from a momentum standpoint, it carries them and creates an environment that our group, we just struggled to overcome, quite frankly." "Duke's size at the front of the rim, there's a couple of 50-50 plays that could have gone either way," CSF coach Dedrique Taylor said. CS Fullerton looked consistently timid when attacking the basket, especially early.

The model also says one side of the spread hits well over 60 percent of the time. Cal State Fullerton and revealed its coveted picks and predictions for the NCAA Tournament 2022. Duke takes on the No. 15 seed Cal State Fullerton Titans to open its 2022 NCAA Tournament. The Titans are the Big West Tournament champions and have won seven of their last nine contests. The Blue Devils feature one of the nation's most explosive offenses, averaging 80.2 points per game, which ranks ninth in college basketball.
Five-star junior guard Jared McCain announced his commitment to Duke on Friday, becoming the Blue Devils' third five-star pledge in the 2023 class.
"I did not think I was going to spend a lot of time with him," he said. "But he took a lot of time for me and my parents. He has amazing energy and talks with me and treats me like his own. "He would call me after both wins and losses and offer great advice. He played there and made Duke feel special." "I formed a great relationship with Jon Scheyer and staff that was second to none," McCain said.
If Paolo Banchero and Duke are going to send Coach K out with a national championship, they have to turn around some shaky performances.
We’ll see whether his current run of form—which has been productive, jumper notwithstanding—is enough to keep tipping the scales in a huge game, or if the shot becomes a liability. But when Griffin’s shot isn’t falling, he tends to fade into the background, as he prefers to take set shots or create for himself on an island, and isn’t a threat to bomb off screens or force defenders to chase. The shots he likes to take don’t actually make his team that much more difficult to guard, and to some extent, opponents can live with the tough ones. One would think Krzyzewski’s final Duke team has more in the tank, and the hope would be that having the majority of the week to prepare should give it some extra juice headed into the weekend. Shoring up the defense falls on everyone, but Duke simply hasn’t presented a great deal of toughness or physicality on that end of late. Moore is actually Duke’s best player right now, and his athleticism and vision make him its only real weapon on the break (the trio of Keels, Griffin and Banchero isn’t all that fleet of foot). He’s at his best when Duke can run. Duke hasn’t had many macro-level problems scoring the ball this season, boasting the seventh-best adjusted efficiency offense in KenPom and benefitting from the fact that all five of its starters are capable of giving defenses problems individually. Lack of win-or-go-home seasoning is certainly not a Duke-exclusive problem in the one-and-done era, but it does kind of hang over the whole business of projecting how far the Blue Devils can actually go. Duke starts five projected first-round NBA picks, but things are never that simple: The oldest of the group, Wendell Moore Jr., is still 20 years old, as is Mark Williams. Of the three freshmen in the rotation, Paolo Banchero is 19 and Trevor Keels and A. J. Griffin are still 18. Duke tips off Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET against Cal State-Fullerton, and enters the tourney with some stuff to figure out, to say the least. However it may occur, whether in New Orleans or San Francisco or, God forbid, Greenville, the end of the road draws near for Duke and Mike Krzyzewski, who, as you may have heard, is retiring. But as the spotlight on the Blue Devils magnifies this week, the tenor of the national conversation has been that Duke doesn’t quite have the feel of a contender, and that it isn’t quite playing its best basketball at the best time of year.

Duke leads 37-27 at halftime of its first game in the 2022 NCAA tournament. Long before Saint Peter’s knocked of Kentucky Thursday night, the Duke Blue Devils suffered a similar ignominy 10 years ago this week. Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski did his first-ever in-game TV interview with CBS’ Tracy Wolfson during the under-12 television timeout. The Titans are seeded No. 15 in the West Region, which pits them against No. 2-seeded Duke. The sparsely filled crowd that the Blue Devils played in front of to open their NCAA tournament run has filled in nicely 20 minutes in. With Duke starting off its NCAA tournament Friday against Cal State Fullerton in Greenville, S.C., the Blue Zone has you covered with some can't-miss prop ...
The Blue Devils may be favored to win their game against the Titans, but that doesn’t mean that every player needs to contribute a big scoring performance Friday. Though it’s likely he scores double-digit points, numbers higher than 15 are not in the cards as much for him Friday. With a chance to keep their season alive on the line, expect the Titans to play the toughest they have all season, especially as they take on a No. 2 seed. With the stats to back up this pick, there's plenty to like about the over. Duke has what it takes to beat Cal State Fullerton, as it has defeated teams of its caliber plenty of times throughout both nonconference and conference play with relative ease. In the Blue Devils' last six games, the group and their opponents have combined for more than 149 points all but one time.

Sometime between today and never, Duke Blue Devils men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will lose one more NCAA tournament game. If he does lose, it would be ...
When Mike Krzyzewski did lose—when the TV screen filled up with his face, clenched in outrage that someone had come out ahead of him in a fair and competitive sporting event—it was possible to believe there was still such a thing as justice. If Duke’s turn toward one-and-done NBA-level talent made his teams less annoying to watch, his seething smugness as he climbed all alone to the top of the coaching records only grew more unbearable—and along with that, each new loss became a more palpable insult to his legend. Almost none of the specifics return to mind, except Maryland’s point guard, Steve Blake, fouling out on a phantom call while playing against—and dominating—Duke’s Jason Williams, leaving the Terps without a ballhandler as Williams and the Blue Devils rallied in the final minute. Back in those first years of real championship success, Duke seemed to be attracting more and more players who wanted to be the stomping Laettner, rather than the pass-slinging Hill. The team’s idea of hard-nosed defense turned chippier and chippier, with Krzyzewski berating the referees until they learned to defer to his views on whether Duke’s endless poking and slapping to get the ball away was legal. The pain became manageable again after a few months of rest, during which Smith and Wallace opted out of their junior years to become the No. 1 and No. 4 picks in the NBA draft, respectively. I personally rooted for the Maryland Terrapins, a team of delightful talent and cursed luck, and by extension—or once Maryland was eliminated—I rooted for the rest of the ACC to uphold the conference’s honor, or for the Big East teams to uphold the honor of the Eastern Seaboard. I felt bad when Duke lost the 1986 national championship game to a seven-loss Louisville team. Duke fans would elevate this to a point of fanatical belief, until the supply of NBA-caliber players willing to serve a four-year apprenticeship had dwindled so far that Krzyzewski suddenly could see the virtue in offering two- or one-year terms to his scholar-athletes. At the time, the Maryland basketball program was on the brink of collapse from NCAA penalties, ostensibly for a long list of petty rule infractions but really to punish the program for the cocaine overdose death of Len Bias, the most glorious player I would ever see. Even if they weren’t speaking to each other, Krzyzewski and Knight shared a knack for taking credit for being the righteous guys, no matter how contrary to the facts that might be. This is who he is, the man who gave his name to the Duke business school’s Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics while serving as a national avatar of bad sportsmanship. The pinch-faced scowling and barking from the sidelines becomes not the hard price of greatness (paid, mostly, by his players) but a mere loop of misery feeding on itself. The arena was full of worshipful fans and dozens of devoted ex-players and admiring national media, and the Tar Heels just clobbered the Blue Devils—Krzyzewski got outcoached, his team outhustled, however you might wish to describe it.
No. 2-seed Duke has its first game of the NCAA tournament Friday against No. 15-seed Cal State Fullerton. The Blue Devils come in as 18.5-point favorites ...
Like Kentucky, the Blue Devils enter the NCAA tournament off a tough loss, but something is telling me that Duke will come out of the gates a little more motivated to kick off its tournament run with a statement victory. With nearly a week of rest, the fatigue we observed in the Duke defense in that brutal second half against Virginia Tech is gonna be in the rear-view and guard Trevor Keels will be back to himself shooting the ball with a revitalized Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams inside. The Titans are no joke—just take a look at the last minute of their conference tournament championship win against Long Beach State—but the Blue Devils are bigger, more talented, more battle-tested, you name it. Twice in one tournament would be nuts, and I can’t imagine Coach K’s career ending at the hands of Cal State Fullerton, so I’m sticking with Duke. I’m not going to lie and say my bracket is perfect, or good, but I stand by my pick on this one. This is March, and every matchup should gain excitement, but Friday night’s matchup won’t add much to the first-weekend craziness. Cal State Fullerton checks in at 149th in KenPom rankings, and I just do not think they have the size to compete with the likes of Mark Williams and Paolo Banchero. I'm not super high on this Duke team right now, but ultimately its superior talent is going to be enough for the win. The Blue Devils aren’t the same dominant Blue Devils we have seen in the past. And if it can put all the pieces together, Duke can make this one an easy win to prime itself for its goal of a deep run. March has delivered on the Madness so far, so I’m not ready to call this one a lock. The Blue Devils have maybe the most talented roster in the tournament on paper, and they will likely come out with fire trying to avenge two big recent losses. One thing I’m interested in is how Duke communicates defensively, especially after the Blue Devils were shredded on ball screens and dribble handoffs against North Carolina and Virginia Tech, respectively. After seeing Kentucky fall to No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s Thursday, I think Duke comes out of the gates ready to play in this one.

His Titans surpassed preseason expectations, as Fullerton was slated to finish seventh in the Big West Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll and eighth in the conference media poll. Fullerton’s opponent, Long Beach State, entered the Big West tournament as the No. 1 seed and defeated the Titans 71-61 in their only matchup of the season. Fullerton’s coach Dedrique Taylor became the first coach in the school’s history to take the Titans to the Big Dance multiple times.
