Michigan State basketball defeats Davidson thanks to clutch plays late (Spartan Avenue)

Michigan State basketball relied on some clutch plays down the stretch to beat the Foster Loyer-led Davidson Wildcats on Friday.

Duke presents an enormous test and the Spartans don’t match up well (on paper) with them yet Izzo relishes the underdog role. A jumper by Davidson big man Luka Brajkovic capped off a 7-0 run by the Wildcats to pull them ahead 52-49. Their tight perimeter defensive pressure forced the Wildcats to miss 19 of their three-point attempts.

Davidson vs Michigan State live observations from NCAA ... (Charlotte Observer)

Davidson Wildcats and Michigan State Spartans meet in the first round of NCAA tournament 2022. What's the score? The winner will face Coach K and Duke.

But Davidson is hanging tough nonetheless: 15-14, Michigan State leads with 11:17 left in the first half. Davidson has to find a way to get a couple of stops on the defensive end and convert them to points. The Wildcats have kept this game tight while playing without A-10 Player of the Year Luka Brajkovic for all but 4 minutes due to foul trouble. Michigan State responded with a quick 3 on the other end and then went on an 8-0 run. There’s 3:01 to play and Michigan State has taken all the momentum back. The Charlotte Observer has a team of journalists at the game, including columnist Scott Fowler, and will be posting live observations throughout.

Michigan State basketball finds offense late to beat Davidson in ... (Detroit Free Press)

A run in the latter stages of the second half helped the No. 7 seed Michigan State beat No. 10 seed Davidson, 74-73, in the NCAA tournament on Friday.

However, the Spartans held Brajkovic to just two points and a rebounds in four minutes before he went to the bench with four fouls. They made two 3s and they made a deuce. Hoggard drove and cut the deficit back to a point. He missed the free throw after a media timeout, but Brajkovic grabbed the rebound and scored on the block to make it a 56-51 Davidson lead as MSU went nearly 5½ minutes scoreless. Hoggard kept attacking off the drive, getting into the lane for a runner with 3:38 left. With Bingham and then Marble each picking up their third fouls, Brajkovic hit his first five shots of the half and scored 11 points in the first 10-plus minutes. Both teams committed five turnovers, with the Spartans also getting nine points of their giveaways and Davidson scoring six. We got into the center of the ring and we fought. Players stopped, and the ball went to Davidson’s Michael Jones. We stayed in the center ring and we kept fighting. MSU committed just seven turnovers, but one of those came with 37.7 seconds left and the Wildcats applying full-court pressure. MSU’s defense locked down Hyunjung Lee, holding the 6-foot-7 swingman to 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting, including a 3-pointer with 0.5 left.

How to Watch NCAA Tournament First Round: Michigan State vs ... (CalBearsMaven)

We are in for an exciting matchup as the No. 10 seeded Davidson takes on the No. 7 seeded Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State plays in arguably one of the toughest conferences in college basketball and that should speak for something since it was 20-11 this season. Davidson's money line is +100, and the projection of the total points is Over/Under 140.5 points. Davidson, who is back in the tournament for one of the first times since Stephen Curry, has put together a powerful roster. This is one of the few games where neither one of these teams won their respective conference tournaments. According to history, these No. 7 and No. 10 seeded games are prone to upsets. There has only been one year in the past 35 NCAA tournaments where all four No. 7 seeds have won.

Hauser scored in the paint twice, Brown hit his second triple and Bingham made a turnaround hook to help Michigan State build a five-point lead. No. 7 seed Michigan State (22-12) is in the tournament for the 24th straight year under coach Tom Izzo but has just one Sweet 16 appearance in the last five postseasons. Davidson’s Sam Mennenga counter with a 3-pointer after the Wildcats missed their first three from beyond the arc, including an airball from former Spartan Foster Loyer. Michigan State point guard Tyson Walker, who suffered an ankle injury last week, checked into the game for Hoggard at the 17:07 mark. Davidson went on an 8-0 run for a three-point lead before Max Christie and Walker knocked down jumpers for their first points of the game as the Spartans reclaimed the lead. Michigan State went more than five minutes without a point before Hoggard scored on a layup. Brajkovic had a put-back after a missed free throw as Davidson took a five-point lead but Michigan State countered with an 8-0 run. He then scored under the basket to give Michigan State a 49-45 lead. Hauser got an open look from beyond the arc and missed his first shot of the game before Lee countered with a triple on the ensuing trip down the court. Marble followed with a score in the paint while drawing a foul and will shoot a free throw after the media timeout. Hall drew a charge on Lee and Brown split a pair of free throws to put the Spartans up eight. Walker made a pair from the line before Lee hit a triple to make it a one-point game with 0.5 seconds remaining. Hoggard knocked down a pair of free throws and Hauser split his two before Loyer made a triple to pull the Wildcats within two points with four seconds left.

Couch: 3 quick takes on Michigan State's 74-73 NCAA tournament ... (Lansing State Journal)

Lansing State Journal columnist Graham Couch gives his initial thoughts on the Spartans' performance Friday night in the NCAA tournament's first round.

But MSU has earned the right to take a swing. He was attentive defensively and was a matchup that Davidson couldn’t take off the dribble. It was a great drive and recognition of an opening and he didn’t hesitate. They look the part of an NBA team on the front line. It was also an interesting decision by MSU’s coaches, but one that nearly paid off — if the officials had correctly given Brooks the bucket and the foul on his put-back, instead of calling it a non-shooting foul on the rebound. He had another rebound and drove to the basket, dishing to Joey Hauser for an open 3. You’ll live with two points on 1-for-5 shooting from Christie, if you also get a 4-for-11 night shooting from Lee, who MSU made work for every look. It could be the end is near, so it makes you feel a different way. He had taken one wild shot and grabbed that offensive rebound, which did lead to an MSU bucket eventually. “I thought we had a really good plan offensively, so I felt really confident in that,” said Hauser, who matched the career-high he set on Christmas day 2020. They won because they found a lineup that worked late — Hauser, Brown, Julius Marble, Tyson Walker and Hoggard — and stuck with it. MSU didn’t have a lot of good answers for Davidson’s big men, either.

Recap: MSU escapes NCAA tourney opener with 74-73 win over ... (The Detroit News)

Joey Hauser tied a career-high with 27 points as Michigan State escaped with a 74-73 win over Davidson in its NCAA Tournament opener on Friday night.

Michigan State enters the tournament on somewhat of a solid run after a rocky season. Michigan State has made five consecutive shots from the floor and Davidson has made 5 of its last 7, as we're all tied at 19. They overturn the call, and give it back to Davidson, despite Michigan State pulling down the rebound on the actual shot. Sam Mennenga answers for Davidson with a 3-pointer of his own, as we're off and running in Greenville. Michigan State answers by scoring on three straight possessions, going up 32-29. Gabe Brown hits a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it a three-point lead for Michigan State. The officials just called a shot-clock violation on a Davidson shot hit the rim, and they're in all sorts of disarray. Tyson Walker is fouled as Michigan State successfully inbounds the ball. A 3-point play is then matched by a 3-pointer from Joey Hauser, who now has 17 points while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. It's 69-65, Michigan State, with 37 seconds to go. Sam Mennenga answers with a layup. Davidson has gone ice cold on offense.

TOC Staff Picks: Davidson vs. Michigan State (The Only Colors)

The Spartans are one-point favorites as of press time, and the No. 7 against No. 10 matchup is always rich with upsets in the first round of the tournament.

Foster Loyer, after starting the game hot, cools off as a result of Michigan State’s adjustments. The Spartans play a good overall game and surge late to put Davidson away. The Wildcats pose a real test, not only do they shoot the ball extremely well from the three-point line, but overall as well — it’s a legitimate top-20 offense based on efficiency. For the 24th-straight season, Michigan State is participating in college basketball’s championship tournament. Foster Loyer inevitably drains four three-pointers, and Luka Brajkovic has a solid performance as well, but the Wildcats come up just short. There are plenty of storylines in the region, with MSU seeing Foster Loyer again and a potential battle with Duke looming.
