After limping to finish line, where do Nate Oats, Tide go from here? (unknown)

The Crimson Tide beat Gonzaga … and lost to some of the worst teams in the SEC, like Georgia. College basketball's one-and-done nature in the NCAA Tournament ...

The Crimson Tide were in no position to make a deep tournament run. Oats is in his third season at Alabama. There was reason to believe that he and his team would achieve new heights after making the Sweet 16 last season. The most elite programs in the nation can attest to that. That was evident when Alabama lost in the first round of the SEC Tournament to Vanderbilt. That, along with what happened on Friday and the culmination of the regular season, seemed to send a clear message that Bama’s players were ready for the season to be over. Alabama’s basketball season ended in the worst way possible, and not simply because it ended with a first-round defeat. Oats is quick to note that Alabama made consecutive runs to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005-2006. Maybe Oats was trying to save some fan equity by saying that there was some success in a first-round loss. If Bama had the talent and wherewithal to beat some of the most talented teams in the nation, then why didn’t they have the same mentality against lesser opponents? Oats also pointed out that Alabama is the only team in the NCAA Tournament that has beaten two No. 1 seeds: the Zags and Baylor. In doing so, he was trying to defend his program. Kentucky is still a really good basketball team despite losing in the first round to Saint Peter’s. A hot team can eliminate most any opponent when it just takes one win to jettison a contender. However, Bama was a team that, despite its No. 6 seeding in the NCAA Tournament, seemed bound to disappoint. An early exit in the NCAA Tournament seemed like the most likely end to Bama’s season leading up to March.

March Sadness: Alabama Basketball Concludes Season with 0-4 ... (Bama Maven)

While the season had a promising start, the Crimson Tide simply could not find a way to win in college basketball's most impactful month.

Just because the Crimson Tide didn't reach/surpass the Sweet 16 like it did in 2021 does not mean that this year was not a success. After all that this team achieved and was capable of achieving, a thrilling start ultimately ended in a whimpering conclusion. For now, the Crimson Tide faithful must continue to experience a feeling that seems to be historically entwined with the program: Oats has the program pointed in the right direction, but this season simply wasn't the right time. While there were certainly high points over the course of the season, the tournament run for Alabama basketball ended all too early. Some won't. The ones that are moving on, we've got some good memories of the year, just disappointing end to it." Despite inexplicable losses to inferior opponents that became a regular occurrence over the course of the season, Alabama still managed to pick up enough big wins to warrant a 6-seed in the tournament. While its 8-1 start to the year relied on effort at both ends of the court to get the job done, resulting in massive wins and an impressive start, the team quickly turned to rely solely on talent rather than effort, a recipe that ultimately spelled Alabama's demise. All the fans were a little annoyed — the coaching staff, the players were annoyed. Alabama's big wins in December might have been the season's high point for a team that seemed to peak far too early. While it seems like forever and a day ago at this point, Alabama started the season 8-1 with massive wins over quality opponents. After a season that saw them 19-10 heading into the final full month of college basketball, the Crimson Tide simply could not acquire 20 wins.

What's next for Alabama hoops after season-ending loss is digested? (al.com)

Alabama could look significantly different again next fall for Nate Oats' fourth season as coach.

According to College Basketball Reference’s simple rating system, which takes into account average point differential and strength of schedule, the 2020-21 season was the best for Alabama in all seasons tracked since 1949, while this season was seventh-best. If Alabama adds through the transfer portal this offseason, it would not be surprising to see Nate Oats place an emphasis on basketball IQ, leadership skills and toughness -- some of the qualities it found in Yale transfer Jordan Bruner two seasons ago. Tchikou, a top-70 prospect in the 2020 class, was not in uniform for Friday’s game in San Diego. “Like, you’ve got to be able to convince them that we’ve got to change and get better, even though we won. But no player’s output seemed to be more erratic that Quinerly’s. Although still effective at driving to the basket and scoring 14.3 points per game, Quinerly’s three-point percentage took a nosedive, he was turnover prone and his defensive effort was openly questioned by Oats at multiple points. Davison’s sometimes questionable decision-making led to turnover-heavy games and a critical shot-clock violation late in a loss in Baton Rouge, while Bediako was relegated to spot duty in some games without a fair defensive matchup. Oats routinely called out his team for a lack of energy and effort, especially on defense, inserting walk-on Britton Johnson into the game and benching other players -- most notably Quinerly -- to send a message. To Oats’ credit, he cautioned fans before the season that expecting 16-2 conference records and SEC titles might be a large ask for a program that is looking to establish itself as a consistent member of the NCAA tournament field. Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers 🙏🏼 the rest is in God’s hands… That was a luxury enjoyed by Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, who relayed a story after Friday’s win about how senior guard Cormac Ryan -- who scored 29 points against Alabama -- wanted Brey to light into his team in practice after losing to Virginia Tech to open the ACC tournament. He said the Tide’s 2020-21 team might be the best in the program’s history, and it “changed the entire narrative” of basketball at Alabama. Oats noted that senior James Rojas stepped up as a leader after he returned from injury, but otherwise there was a “void” that never was filled.

The Irish's (23-10 overall, 3rd in ACC) scrappy play in second half of Wednesday's First Four round helped them eek past Rutgers, 89-87. Side note: Cormac Ryan is holding it down for the Irish offense. Notre Dame went into the locker room with a slight edge over Alabama, 35-31. But Alabama answers with a Juwan Gary three.

Alabama basketball' season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to Notre Dame, far short of the team's potential.

“If you're a 2, 3 seed, you're not playing Notre Dame in the first round. The Crimson Tide defeated Gonzaga and Houston in December, two Final Four teams from the previous year. “We can go big, small, whatever we have to do,” Oats said on Feb. 22. Alabama showed it had the ability to beat anyone. The Crimson Tide convinced its leading scorer, Jaden Shackelford, to stay after he looked at his options. Wins were expected for this group because of what Alabama brought back.

Quinerly was the only player who went to the voluntary shootaround that night. "Shot it really well," Oats said.

Alabama Basketball: Five keys to beating Notre Dame (BamaHammer)

Check out five keys for an Alabama Basketball victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Tide and Irish meet Friday afternoon in the Big Dance.

The reverse of tempo working for the Crimson Tide would be defensive lapses by Alabama. This season the Crimson Tide defense has, at times, faltered late in possessions. - The Notre Dame bigs are not leapers and Charles Bediako should cause them trouble near the basket. Predicting how this season’s Crimson Tide will play is perplexing. The only Irish defensive answer to Bediako is to get him to watch most of the game from the bench. The Irish have four guys who shoot the three well; Nate Laszewski at 46.2%, Dane Goodwin at 45.6%, Trey Wertz at 38.7% and Cormac Ryan at 38.4%. Two of those shooters are 6’5″, one is 6’6″ and one is 6’10”. Alabama must be careful to not foul them trying to close out late. Instead, they are the type of team that will let an opponent beat itself.

Rewinding Alabama's 78-64 loss to Notre Dame in NCAA tournament (al.com)

The game between the No. 6 seed Crimson Tide and No. 11 seed Fighting Irish tipped off at 3:25 p.m. CT from Viejas Arena in San Diego and aired nationally on ...

Notre Dame 3, Alabama 2 (16:31): A hush came over Viejas Arena after Jahvon Quinerly was fouled going to the basket and immediately grabbed for his left knee. Alabama also has fewer turnovers (four) than Notre Dame (six), which was a point of emphasis for Nate Oats this week. Notre Dame 55, Alabama 47 (11:40): The Irish went on another 8-0 run with help from four turnovers and three misses from three-point range for Alabama in a span of seven possessions. Notre Dame is shooting 59 percent from the field and 75 percent (6-of-8) on three pointers, which would be season highs for an Alabama opponent. Guard Cormac Ryan is 4-of-5 from deep and looks like a problem to solve for the Tide in the second half. Notre Dame 32, Alabama 32 (3:07): The Irish pulled ahead again for the seventh lead change of the second half and continues to shoot above 50 percent, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. During the timeout, Alabama received word that Jahvon Quinerly is out for the game because of his knee injury. Alabama has started 1-for-8 from the field, including 0-for-3 from three. Notre Dame 57, Alabama 47 (10:02): Can sense the urgency from Alabama’s bench as every possession has increased importance at this point. Alabama thought it had a foul against Notre Dame after a steal attempt by Juwan Gary, but Gary was called for the foul -- and Nate Oats protested. Another JD Davison turnover, his sixth, and a Notre Dame dunk sent the green-clad portion of Viejas Arena into a frenzy. A rough homecoming game for Jaden Shackelford, the Southern California native who finished 4-of-17 on field goals and 2-of-10 on three pointers.

Meanwhile, Alabama had some costly turnovers that helped Notre Dame build its lead early in the second half. Yet Alabama forced Notre Dame into a fair amount of mistakes. Alabama also needed Jaden Shackelford to step up as he played in his home state of California. He went 2-for-7 in the first half with eight points. They had only five in the win over Rutgers in the play-in game Wednesday. He's spent time in and out of the starting lineup. He was ruled out of the game with a left knee injury before the first half had even ended.

In-N-Out: Alabama Basketball's NCAA Tournament Road Ended ... (CalBearsMaven)

SAN DIEGO — Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats stressed three important things that his Crimson Tide needed to improve on heading into the NCAA Tournament.

Davison was one assist shy of a double-double with nine, leading the team in the category. [...] They were the better team today and gotta give them a lot of credit." The Crimson Tide conclude its year with a 19-14 overall record. Regarding Oats' list of things to improve for March Madness, Alabama finished the game having turned the basketball over 14 times, a slight improvement. "I wasn't like all the way tired to the point where I couldn't, I needed a breather. Just after Alabama forward Noah Gurley had quieted the Notre Dame crowd with a dunk, Ryan hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to bring the Fighting Irish fans back on their feet. "I thought he was ready to play, and three minutes into the game he gets the knee injury, can't play the rest of the game. Notre Dame drained a three to start the second half, but six unanswered points by Davison cut the Fighting Irish's lead down to two. Alabama responded with a 3 from guard Jaden Shackelford, but the margin was still 11 points in favor of Notre Dame with 11:40 left to play. With Quinerly gone and Oats being forced to use Bediako sparingly, Alabama seemed to grow tired. At just under three-and-a-half minutes into the game, Crimson Tide junior guard Jahvon Quinerly injured his left knee while driving to the basket. After 5:30 had ticked off of the clock, the game was tied at 6.

Nate Oats: Maturity, experience were issues for Alabama, but still ... (al.com)

Alabama's season ended Friday afternoon with its fourth consecutive loss, this time to Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament.

“Overall, I’d say we had a successful season just a little disappointed, a little inconsistent, to be honest with you,” Oats said. “If you’re a No. 2, No. 3 seed, you’re not playing Notre Dame in the first round. “I thought maybe we handled adversity a little -- not quite as well,” Oats said of the season as a whole. “I thought guys wanted to do well,” he said. “And some guys had gone the night before [Wednesday] and [Quinerly] didn’t. So then he went [Thursday]. We had shooting times at a high school gym every night here because our guys get in the gym a lot on their own back home. “I’m still a little frustrated,” Oats acknowledged after Friday’s game. “The buy-in was there for most of them most of the time. I thought effort waned a little bit here and there.” “But we made the tournament as a No. 6 seed with a chance to advance. “It was a successful season by a lot of standards,” Oats said. “I don’t think buy-in was necessarily an issue as much as maturity and experience were.” They’re a veteran group and they made shots.”

Alabama Basketball: Tide and Irish seeds should have been reversed (BamaHammer)

The Alabama Basketball season muddled to an end Friday afternoon in San Diego in a loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that was no upset.

Despite the disappointing ending to a once-promising season, it should be acknowledged Nate Oats has raised expectations for Alabama Basketball. There is little reason to doubt him, though next season, with a roster built by his recruiting, performance needs to match promise. The Irish were also 10-for-11 from the foul line. Against Notre Dame, the Tide played more like the 11-seed rather than the Fighting Irish. When an 11-seed beats a 6-seed, it is supposed to be an upset. The Alabama basketball season came to a close Friday afternoon in San Diego. The closing game loss, 78-64 to Notre Dame was hardly shocking. After opening the SEC season with wins over Tennessee and Florida, Alabama was 11-3. But many of the Irish threes were solidly contested.

And so I have a short memory, if he can help us. And we would love to be the example this year. He's had to play the whole time and be the playmaker the whole time when they really have two playmakers, like we do. And I thought Virginia Tech was really ready to roll against us two weeks ago because they played well and you got a feel of things. And our defense -- we knew a little bit more what to do defensively when he was out because there was really only one guy really going. And I thought that grew him and got him more confident. And it's not like it's my time to do it, I need to get mine. And we were hungry down in Dayton, and I don't think we ever lost it. CORMAC RYAN: To be honest, I don't think we knew that, I don't think anybody did. And so when we're rolling and we're guarding, and then you add the 3-point attack, we're really a tough group to deal with. And when you have it rolling, you have it rolling. And I think the quick trip actually helped us because we were still hungry.

I thought at times it was as good as it was the year before. We had the tough call when Juwan had the steal, that we thought we'd get a breakaway on. So the buy-in was there for most of them most of the time. We had a lot of guys that were not -- Charles Bediako started for us as a freshman. We didn't get to the free-throw line enough. I wasn't like all the way tired to the point where I couldn't, I needed a breather. And he told me if anything was, if we were going to turn this around they needed me to shoot the wide-open shot. We just didn't play well in the first round. I thought he was ready to play, and three minutes into the game he gets the knee injury, can't play the rest of the game. I mean, gotta give Notre Dame a lot of credit to play in a play-in game and go double overtime, fly in here as late as they did, play with one-day rest and give the energy they got. But we made the tournament as a 6 seed with a chance to advance. He's the starting point guard so he's a big piece of what we do.
