The Boston Red Sox are rumored to be interested in signing free-agent Trevor Story but there's a catch - he needs to be willing to switch positions.
Story also provides the Red Sox with insurance in the event that Bogaerts opts-out with the intention of bolting next winter. The trade market could produce some more appealing options but if Boston runs out of time to find a solution for right field, they might be stuck with Jackie Bradley Jr. as an everyday player. The Red Sox have Bogaerts covering shortstop for now with 2021 first-round pick Marcelo Mayer waiting to take over in a few years. The rumor mill has tied the Boston Red Sox to several of the top free-agents this offseason. Now that both of them are off the market, the options are limited in free agency. Freeman’s camp may have used the Red Sox to drive up the price but they were never realistically going to top the offer he inevitably accepted from the Dodgers. Boston coveted Seiya Suzuki but their interest wasn’t reciprocated by the Japanese star’s desire to play on the East coast.
Trevor Story had nine defensive runs saved at shortstop for the Rockies last year.
“That’s where I’ve played my whole career and obviously a position I take a lot of pride in... But sometimes you see it and you’re like, ‘Hey, I exist. I love being there.” “It’s like sometimes I don’t even know if I’m on the team,” Bogaerts said Tuesday. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m here?’ But it’s what you do. You guys have got stories to write and you guys have more info on that type of stuff than us as players have. The Red Sox haven’t discussed a potential move to second base with Bogaerts. But he has heard the speculation in the media.
Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story remains on the free agent market, but if the Boston Red Sox sign him, his situation could change.
Hopefully that progresses towards the end of the year and this year.” “Why would I think of playing second or third if I’m playing short?” he said. Obviously it’s a position I take a lot of pride in.”
After missing out on former NL MVP free agent Freddie Freeman, courtesy of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox may be seeking a consolation prize.
Jordan Brown first reported the Yankees and Rizzo were in agreement on a two-year, $32M guarantee with an opt-out after 2022. New York was in contact with the A’s about Matt Olson before Oakland traded him to the Braves. More recently, they were considered among the top handful of suitors for Olson’s predecessor in Atlanta. With Rizzo returning to the Bronx, it no longer seems the Yankees will be in that Freddie Freeman mix. Recent reports have generally cast the Dodgers as the leading contender for the 2020 NL MVP, with the Blue Jays, Red Sox and Padres reported to be on the outskirts of his market. They traded for Rizzo at the deadline, then reportedly came close to pulling the trigger on a subsequent deal that would’ve shipped Voit out over the summer. Yet the recent trade for Josh Donaldson and today’s agreement with Rizzo solidify that the Yankees will exceed the competitive balance tax threshold in 2022 after dipping below the marker last season. The Yankees have settled on a first baseman, reportedly agreeing to terms with Anthony Rizzo on a two-year, $32M guarantee. With Rizzo back in the fold, it stands to reason Voit’s name will come up in trade talks over the coming weeks. They could coexist as a first base/designated hitter pairing on many rosters, but the Yankees don’t have many DH at-bats to spare. Rizzo seems a fairly definitive upgrade with the glove over incumbent first baseman Luke Voit, who has always been a bat-first player — even relative to the lower defensive standards of the position. That was more or less in line with the .248/.346/.446 mark he’d put up in 376 trips to the plate with Chicago over the season’s first couple months. That combination made him perhaps the face of the Cubs’ most successful run in over a century. Rizzo will be returning to the Bronx, where he finished the 2021 season.
The New York Yankees appear set at shortstop after Sunday's five-player trade with the Minnesota Twins which landed them Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
With the MLB lockout finally over, the free agent market is finally moving again. Freddie Freeman, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, and Anthony Rizzo.
By trading away Josh Donaldson, they saved $50 million, so they now have more flexibility to try and make a play for Story and build a contending team. The Twins could have a spot for him too. Boston would be an interesting fit for Story and putting him in a lineup that already consists of Rafael Devers, JD Martinez, Alex Verdugo, and Xander Bogaerts would make Boston a darkhorse contender to take home the AL East title.
It's unusual — maybe uncomfortable — to witness this level of patience when the Red Sox seemed raring to go, and other teams sign players.
Now that Freddie Freeman and Kris Bryant have signed, Correa and Story are two of the few big names left. Correa reportedly has massive deals on the table (10- ...
Adding Trevor Story to the Mariners on a one-year deal might not be the ideal move for fans. The Mariners lineup goes from a bottom 5-10 in all of baseball in 2021 to a top 5-10 in 2022. That’s a near 50 HR guy in the 7th spot, and the 2020 AL ROY in the 8th spot. He could always trade someone away at the deadline and gain a couple of prospects in order to make a deal the next offseason to build the team back up again. If they like the new culture of the Mariners, combined with the youth that is coming up, maybe a couple of them re-sign with the team. There are a couple of reasons.
The Boston Red Sox whiffed on Freddie Freeman, but it appears they may set their sights on another free agent with a big bat in Trevor Story.
The Boston Red Sox desperately need another big bat in their lineup to replace the production lost from the departures of Renfroe and Schwarber. Story offers that and a solid positional fit in the same package. Story fills two areas of need at once, and with Freeman off the board, it makes sense for the Sox to make a big push for Story. Considering Story is one of the best remaining players on the market, his value may increase just a bit. Add Story to the equation, and it’s going to be tough to keep this lineup quiet on a nightly basis. Story is one of the best power-hitting middle infielders in the league currently, and the potential upside of adding his bat to this lineup is huge. However, there are still some big names left on the free agent market, and one of those names is former Colarado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story. With Freeman heading to LA, it appears Boston has turned their attention to Story for the time being.

The counterargument is that Pham still commands the strike zone, and that he proved last season he can still hit the ball hard and on a line. Otherwise, he's going to spend most of the year sitting on a contender's bench. He batted .269/.358/.524 the rest of the way, even launching 14 homers in his final 55 contests. That same injury had sidelined him earlier in 2021, and this time it wiped out the rest of his season, preventing him from making an official appearance with the Dodgers following a deadline trade. He appeared to be an obvious candidate to accept the qualifying offer, but a report from last month indicated that he intended to decline and seek out something better on the open market. When Soler was traded to the Braves at the deadline, he was hitting .192/.288/.370 with 13 home runs in 94 games. Though he rebounded to an extent in the second half (.252/.347/.445), his chances of cashing in this winter were already dashed. He is, nevertheless, the most accomplished and (perhaps) the most consistent; that combination, in this author's estimation, will make him the most wealthy. Two notes on his season that should encourage teams this winter: 1) his walk rate increased despite him still throwing a well-above-average rate of strikes, suggesting the former was a blip rather than a concern; and 2) he showed increased confidence in his slider, giving him another weapon to deploy as he deems it necessary. (Heck, one team was reportedly interested in making him a center fielder at the deadline.) Factor in the lingering concerns about his home/road splits (over the last three seasons his OPS was more than 200 points higher at Coors Field) and the bloated shortstop market, and he might end up serving as the winter's Marcus Semien, settling for a pillow contract before landing the mattress next year. Freddie Freeman joined the Los Angeles Dodgers; Seiya Suzuki linked up with the Chicago Cubs; and Kyle Schwarber took his big bat to the Philadelphia Phillies. Factor in the Matt Chapman trade (from Oakland to Toronto) and it was a busy day. The area where decline was most evident with his game was in the field, particularly his arm . He made nearly as many throwing errors last season (11) as he did the previous two years combined (12). Perhaps the offseason will allow Story to rest his weary elbow, yet some teams may already view him as a second baseman.
After losing out on Freddie Freeman, Red Sox are taking a look at Trevor Story. One catch: he would likely have to play 2B as 2-time WS champ Xander Bogaerts is ...
Trevor Story will remain a player to look out for in the free agent market. The Houston Astros are still looking to re-sign Carlos Correa, but a deal has yet to be made. The Boston Red Sox are still looking to add another player to their roster in free agency.
After missing out on Freddie Freeman, the Boston Red Sox could reportedly make a run at All-Star shortstop Trevor Story.
However, they are also exploring the trade market with interest in Oakland Athletics pitchers Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. While it would be a significant financial commitment, the Red Sox have trimmed payroll in recent years and the Competitive Balance Tax spiked thanks to the new CBA. Any potential deal will likely cost Boston at least $22 million per season with a contract starting at four years.
