"We understand how meaningful the traditional route is to South Boston, with the parade incorporating Dorchester Heights where Evacuation Day was made possible. Despite the shortened route this year, our plan is for the parade to revert back to its traditional route in 2023, as it was in 2019 and was planned to be in 2020."

St. Patrick's Day parades are back and bigger than ever. Here are some of the best parades around the country.

Unlike previous years, the parade will take a shortened route which was decided upon at the height of the Omicron outbreak. Spectators are advised to find a spot anywhere along Broadway for the best views and are also encouraged to use public transportation since on-street parking will be limited. It ends at the corner of North Washington and Vine. Wyoming Ave is noted as a good spot for viewers, as are the bleachers near the reviewing booth on North Washington Ave. New York City's 2022 St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held on Thursday March 17th, beginning promptly at 11am local time and ending at approximately 4:30pm local time. A prayer will be said by Cardinal Dolan on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral with colorguard's from the New York fire and police departments, the 69th Regiment and Port Authority Police Department. They will then play Taps and Amazing Grace before the parade resumes and continues up Fifth Avenue. Several bagpipers and other entertainers will grace the floats. Below are some of the biggest and best parades taking place this year. The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on March 17th, at 10:15am local time, beginning at the intersection of Abercorn and Gwinnett and ending at the reviewing stand on Bull and Liberty. The parade will feature marchers, floats and other family-oriented entertainment. The Bud Light St. Patrick's Day River Parade will take place on Saturday, beginning at 4pm local time near the Westin Hotel. A procession of 12 Irish-themed decorated floats will follow the parade route. The St. Patrick's Festival & River Parade will begin with the dyeing of the River Walk green, on Thursday, March 17th at 1pm local time. The parade in New York is expected to be the largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the U.S., with more than 2 milllion spectators expected to attend.

Powers gave a big thumbs up to the congregation. And this is the third year since we’ve had a parade, so I haven’t been able to see a lot of those folks in a while," Powers said. On the bus ride there, Powers was accompanied by his aides and a few members of the executive committee. With a gentle pat on Roush's shoulder, Powers rose to address the committee. That and the mass. His series of pre-parade events started with a breakfast at the Mansion on Forsyth, the first of five for the morning. During breakfast, Powers sat with 2020 Grand Marshal Mike Roush, the most recent Irishman to hold the title. All the ceremony and tradition and work involved in planning the St. Patrick's Day parade was over. The parade usually has around 200 floats, up to as many as 250 some years. The city handles everything outside of it. Fogarty went over a few last-minute reminders with the parade committee's adjutant staff. And the only thing standing between Powers and the 10:15 a.m. parade start was time.

Though the event is shortened this year due to the ongoing pandemic, it's a welcome return to normalcy for revelers. In the past it's attracted the likes of Kevin Bacon, Ralph Macchio and Joey Fatone and this year will be led by celebrity grand marshal Cheech Marin and parade starter Danny Trejo. A tradition since 2004, it brings together up to 30,000 people who line the 98-ft.-long Bridge Street to catch a glimpse of marchers and celebrity grand marshals. Chicago kicked things off this past Saturday, March 12, by once again dyeing its eponymous river green and opening the event to onlookers after it was done quietly last year as to not attract crowds. More than 150,000 marchers are expected to entertain upwards of 2 million spectators, per Thrillist, over the course of five hours. The color lasts about 48 hours.
