March Madness Faced a Gender Reckoning. Now Everyone Gets a Pasta Station—but What Else? (unknown)

The NCAA has a list of everything that will be different about the Division I women's basketball tournament this year. It's the smallest entries on the list ...

Per the report, “holding a joint Division I men’s and women’s basketball Final Four in one location over a single weekend would be the best, and likely the only way to reduce the existing gender inequities seen in Division I men’s and women’s basketball.” (When the NCAA initially responded to the scandal over the tournament last year, it claimed the discrepancy between the men’s and women’s tourney budgets was because the men brought in money while the women annually lost $2.8 million—but it backed up that number by saying that the television rights payment brought in by the women was just $6 million. Even the tourney selection show—which had traditionally been held on Monday, but was moved this year to Selection Sunday, the same as the men—saw a big spike: 1.1 million viewers, representing a 160% increase from 2021. And: The women will have a yogurt bar and a pasta station to match the men’s yogurt bar and pasta station. “The time is now,” Close says. The men’s tournament has a massive deal with CBS and Turner, whose latest extension was for eight years and $8.8 billion. But there are still questions around what that will actually mean—namely, whether it will involve more of the moves recommended in the gender equity review conducted by the law firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink, and if so, which ones and when. The NCAA has a list of everything that will be different about the Division I women’s basketball tournament this year. The coaches had long felt there were striking disparities between the men and women. A year after the NCAA met with controversy for its disparate handling of the men’s and women’s tournaments, it announced a suite of moves designed to change the experience. But that still leaves plenty of questions about structural issues with the tournament. Those questions stand out to a coach like Close. She is the president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association—putting her at the helm of one of the biggest groups that has been pressing for change over the last year.

Coach K's last dance begins, huge dunks from 2-seeds and more from the NCAA tournament (unknown)

The first full day of the NCAA tournament was wild, so let's do it again Friday. Top NBA draft prospects are in action and Coach K begins his final ...

Met up with some great Longhorn at Jimm's in Springfield .. Thanks Cedric and Tony for the outstanding suggestion.. "I knew he was going to foul me but I didn't know I was going to make it until I jumped and am like, 'I can really dunk on that.' I just finished it." But at the end of the day, I'm a @UDelaware guy. "I was going to attack the rim," Smith said. So Del Conte got a car with some Texas fans and headed north. I'm proud of all the athletes competing in this year's NCAA tournament. Smith didn't know if he would be able to pull that off either. GREENVILLE, S. C. -- Bruce Pearl made the all-too-familiar sound of the SportsCenter theme. Chattanooga has elite company in attendance for its game against Illinois. Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens showed up in Pittsburgh to support his alma mater, exchanging pregame handshakes with the team. Only two other Longhorns hit a 3-ball before the break. Texas guard Andrew Jones is off to a hot start against Virginia Tech, scoring 17 points and shooting 5-of-6 from 3-point range in the first half. Guard Isaiah Wong led the team with 22 points despite fouling out late in the contest.

March Madness continues: Ranking the best men's NCAA ... (USA TODAY)

Day two of the NCAA men's basketball tournament's round of 64 promises more of why we love March Madness. Here's a ranking of games to watch.

But give the Titans credit for rallying from a 14-point deficit against Long Beach State in the Big West tournament final to get here. The Gamecocks are happy to be here after benefiting from transitioning Bellarmine’s ASUN tournament win, and they’re happier to get a crack at an in-state power. This could be the most unpredictable of the 7-10 clashes. Such events can often be a sign of future success, but they drew a difficult assignment against a Fighting Illini squad eager to avoid a repeat of last year’s premature tournament exit. The Cougars clearly have the toughest round-of-64 draw in the Blazers, one of the best shooting teams in the field. Both teams can struggle to get defensive stops, so there could be a high score in this one. The Buckeyes limp into the tournament with just one win in their last five outings and could still be shorthanded due to lingering injuries, but E.J. Liddell’s takeover ability will still warrant plenty of attention. The Horned Frogs took some lumps in the crowded Big 12 but were able to post one win in three tries against Kansas down the stretch. The same can’t be said of Tom Izzo’s Spartans, who did just enough in the rugged Big Ten to land on the upper half of the bracket. Davidson’s Bob McKillop has arguably his deepest squad since joining the Atlantic-10, notwithstanding the loss to Richmond in the tourney final. The Pirates had to reinvent themselves when Bryce Aiken sustained a concussion in early January that ended his season, but they won enough games in the Big East to earn a bid. The theory of whether recent performance is a good indicator of March Madness success gets an immediate test.

Visit SportsLine now to see the top three-way NCAA Tournament parlay for Friday, all from the expert who's an outstanding 89-64-4 his last 157 college basketball spread picks, and find out. Before locking in any of your 2022 NCAA Tournament picks or building any parlays for Friday's games, you need to see who SportsLine's college basketball expert Matt Severance is backing. Severance has locked in two other spread picks he loves, backing a pair of teams who are tested after tough roads through two of the nation's top conferences. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, get just 30.5 (33rd in Division I), and 6-10 Sam Waardenburg gets only 4.2 (third on the team). Isaiah Mobley is also 6-10, and he was second in the Pac-12 in rebounds (8.5). Chevez Goodwin (6.5 rebounds), Drew Peterson (6.2) and Max Agbonkpolo (3.4) are all 6-9. The Trojans should dominate the boards and get plenty of second chances to pour on the points. No matter the college basketball odds, there will be upsets, and if you do your homework, you can land some big returns.

March Madness: Less than .001% of perfect brackets remain after 1 ... (ABC Action News)

The Round of 64 continues Friday with 16 more games, beginning with No. 7 Ohio State vs. The odds of filling out a perfect NCAA March Madness bracket are about one in 9.2 quintillion. NCAA.com is tracking perfect brackets this year and calculates that out of over 20 million entries across four major online games (ESPN, Yahoo, CBS and Men's Bracket Challenge Game) only 192 remain. No. 10 Loyola Chicago at 12:15 p.m. NCAA.com says more brackets had Kentucky winning the national championship than had Saint Peter's winning in the first round. We're only halfway through the round of 64, and with 16 games played only about .00096% of brackets remain perfect.

March Madness 2022: North Carolina, Kentucky among winners and ... (CBSSports.com)

Here are the winners and losers from a crazy Thursday in first round NCAA Tournament action.

The path is clearing for the Jayhawks to make a run, and they appear primed to do it. This is an Iowa team that 88.55% of brackets in the CBS Men's Bracket Games had advancing, and 10% had the Hawkeyes going all the way to the Final Four. Instead, this Big Dance will go down as just another Big Disappointment after Iowa was bounced in last year's second round as a No. 2 seed. The Hawkeyes have not been to a Sweet 16 since 1999 and they won't be going this season after falling 67-63 against Richmond in the first upset of the day. The No. 1 overall seed trailed in the second half after entering its game against No. 16 seed Georgia State as a 22.5-point favorite. Sure, the Panthers folded down the stretch and wound up falling far short of becoming the second No. 16 seed to ever defeat a No. 1 seed. It's hard to believe that a program with the history and support of Memphis is in its first NCAA Tournament since 2014. Beyond the three that lost Thursday, No. 12 seed Wyoming also lost in a First Four game against Indiana on Tuesday. That made No. 13 seed South Dakota State – the top 3-point shooting team in the country – a trendy pick to take down No. 4 seed Providence. But in a cruel twist of fate, the Jackrabbits were outgunned from distance by the Friars, hitting only 7 of their 23 3-point attempts in a 66-57 loss. The first round of the NCAA Tournament started a bit slow on Thursday, as there was nothing particularly dramatic in the first window of action. It's a shame one of them had to lose, but all who got to watch enjoyed the perfect nightcap to a nutty day of NCAA Tournament action. The Saint Peter's special stole the show on Thursday, but it was just one game in a day full of good ones. March Madness devolved into utter mayhem in the evening with an earth-shattering upset as No. 15 seed Saint Peter's took down No. 2 seed Kentucky in an 85-79 overtime thriller for the ages.

By a stroke of luck, UCLA athletics director Martin Jarmond saw the tweet and took him up on his offer, providing two tickets for Gesas and a friend. Except here’s the kicker, he doesn’t go to UCLA. In fact, he doesn’t even go to school in California. Gesas grew up in the San Fernando Valley before moving over 2,000 miles away to attend the University of Indiana for film school. The No. 11 Bruins entered the 2021 tournament as an unlikely contender, having to advance through the First Four round just to make it to the round of 64. Four years and a pandemic later, Sister Jean is on the other side of 100 and still the ever-fervent Ramblers fan. He took over in 2004 and has been alongside head coach Jay Wright through two titles, a bond that was on full display after the Wildcats punched their ticket to the third Final Four in San Antonio. At 98, she headlined a Loyola team that became the darling of the 2018 tournament, complete with three straight buzzer-beaters and a frontcourt duo of childhood best friends.

March Madness 2022: The best and worst from Day 1 of men's ... (SB Nation)

The 32-point margin of victory was the largest in an 8/9 game in NCAA tournament history, and by a wide margin. The previous record was held by Purdue, which ...

In what might have been his final collegiate game, the potential National Player of the Year was his typical dominant self, scoring a game-high 30 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds. We’re watching until the bitter end at that point, and there’s no reason for the end to be quite that bitter. The double-double was Tshiebwe’s 28th of the season (a Kentucky record) and his 16th straight. The unraveling would have made more sense if this had been a Calipari team of years past, one loaded with youth and lacking a leader to seize control in a tense moment on the sport’s biggest stage. This is a jeer for the sickos. We knew your history, the blowout loss to Oregon from last year was still fresh in all of our minds, and we bought in anyway. With less than a minute to go and Providence clinging to a 60-57 lead over surging South Dakota State, PC’s Jared Bynum clanked a deep three-pointer from the left wing. The win was especially sweet (and surprising) for Richmond when you consider that just a week ago, it seemed like there was a minimal chance of the Spiders even being in the field of 68, let alone winning a game. Thursday night represents the worst NCAA tournament loss in Kentucky basketball history (“worst,” not most painful — that’s likely reserved for 2015 against Wisconsin or 1975 against UCLA or some other game where the stage was larger), and perhaps the worst loss of John Calipari’s coaching career. Did Indiana’s grueling recent schedule — this was the Hoosiers’ fifth game in seven days and they had to go straight from Dayton after Tuesday night’s win all the way to Portland for Thursday night’s game — play some part in this lopsided affair? First Team All-American Keegan Murray struggled for most of the afternoon, but still managed to finish with 21 points and nine rebounds in what was almost certainly his final collegiate game. The belief in Fran McCaffery’s club was so strong that 85.6 percent of people who filled out an ESPN bracket picked the Hawkeyes to beat Richmond, which is an absurdly high number for a 5/12 game.

What happened to Kentucky against Saint Peter's, and what's next for the Wildcats? (unknown)

The first No. 2 seed is off the board. ESPN's college basketball writers broke down what went wrong for Kentucky -- and right for Saint Peter's.

He would be a top-10 pick if he ultimately departed, but he seems legitimately up in the air. With the portal and the extra year of eligibility due to COVID, it's almost impossible to tell what teams are going to look like in a month, let alone seven months. The Wildcats did lose early in 2004 as a No. 1 seed, but that was to UAB in the round of 32. The Peacocks won't be facing a team that overwhelms them physically, and they certainly won't be afraid after going toe-to-toe with a much stronger 2-seed than ORU did with Ohio State (not to mention all of Big Blue Nation!). The Christian Laettner shot that propelled Duke over UK in the 1992 Elite Eight is legendary, but losing to a No. 1 seed like the Blue Devils isn't quite the same as falling to No. 15 seed Saint Peter's. Kentucky fans have their tales of heartbreak, of course, but the Wildcats have customarily performed well in relation to their seed in the Calipari era. Maybe even one chance in three depending if the opponent is San Francisco and Dons center Yauhen Massalski remains out with a recurring knee injury. Even with all that, Kentucky had plenty of chances to win, but the nail in the coffin was free-throw shooting in overtime. The Murray State-San Francisco winner and Saint Mary's can't be counted out in that conversation. As it is, the 2022 NCAA tournament will be without one of its perennial blue bloods, throwing into greater question what is now perceived to be a wide-open East Region bracket and eliciting an offseason's worth of major questions for head coach John Calipari and his program. The offense too often turned to throwing the ball to Oscar Tshiebwe and hoping for the best -- and while Tshiebwe was the best player in the country this season, he's not at his best trying to create his own offense in the low post. As it is, the 2022 NCAA tournament will be without one of its perennial blue bloods, throwing into greater question what is now perceived to be a wide-open East Region bracket and eliciting an offseason's worth of major questions for head coach John Calipari and his program. The Wildcats shot 1-for-6 from the stripe in the extra period, failing to extend their lead after getting out to a four-point edge in the opening minutes.

March Madness 2022: Saint Peter's stuns Kentucky, No. 15 upsets ... (CBSSports.com)

The biggest upset of this year's NCAA Tournament (so far) arrived with a bang Thursday evening as No. 15 seed Saint Peter's stunned No.

While Kentucky at times looked like the best team in college basketball, the loss against Saint Peter's is the culmination of a late-season swoon that UK could not remedy. I'm not taking away from Saint Peter's. They deserved to win the game. These guys put us in position to win the game, let's finish this off." The Peacocks finally put the game away behind Daryl Banks III's four made free throws in the extra period, giving them their first NCAA Tournament win in program history. An 18.5-point underdog to the mighty Wildcats, the Peacocks' magical March moment was keyed by a huge outing from Banks III, the junior guard who finished with a team-high 27 points in the upset. Then, down the stretch of the second half, the teams exchanged body blows before UK needed to make a shot in regulation to force overtime.
