What Vermont basketball coach John Becker, players said after Arkansas upset falls short (unknown)

Here's what Becker along with Vermont stars Ryan Davis and Ben Shungu said after one of the first round's most competitive games. On Arkansas star Stanley Umude.

"He did a good job of just coming off of the bench and playing his role and attacking where he can attack. He was able to get to the line and kind of get back to a rhythm, so that's just a testament of them to keep going, and they did a good job with that." "I think like coach said, we left some things out on the table, but when all is said and done, I think that we gave it our best shot at it and credit to them. And whenever adversity hit in a game or when things weren't going our way, we were able to bounce back just because of that chemistry." "I just feel bad for the kids and for our program that we couldn't find a way to win tonight. We haven't lost a lot of games, and so to have your season end for everyone but one team, it ends on a loss, and that is just — it hurts." "So the way they were guarding him, they were just staying matted to him, and so we were just running middle ball screen. We just couldn't get stops, and then when we did, we couldn't get the rebound. They just kept running the same set, and we should — we didn't do a good job of keeping him to his left hand. That's why we stayed in the game, and their best player, the last ten minutes made a lot of good plays." He is a really good player, and we weren't trying to get him in foul trouble. "Disappointing with our season ending, but I couldn't be more proud of my team and the way they competed," said Vermont head coach John Becker. "I mean, it just — we wish we could have shot free throws better.

Arkansas vs. New Mexico State (unknown)

Quick tale of the tape and snapshot look at Arkansas' NCAA Tournament Round of 32 matchup against New Mexico State...

Arkansas went 14-2 in the second half of the regular season, and slipping the switch defensively proved to be the game-changer. The Razorbacks held seven league opponents under 60 points and following their 0-3 start in conference play did not allow anyone to touch 80 on the scoreboard until Texas A&M did so Saturday. Arkansas held SEC competition under 40% shooting from the field and 30.0% from three. Vermont challenged the Razorback defense in pick-and-pop coverage with stretch big man Ryan Davis. New Mexico State's two big men, McNair and McCants, combine to shoot below 25% from three. Arkansas has built its reputation on the defensive end of the floor this season, but make no mistake, the Razorbacks are capable of putting up points in bunches, as well. Notae scored all 17 of his in the second half. He averaged 10.8 points and 9.6 rebounds, while recording a dozen double-doubles for the Hogs this season. Joining that trio in double figures is transfer guard Au'Diese Toney, who has pitched in 10.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. The Aggies were efficient as a team Thursday night, shooting 11-of-17 from three and knocking down all 13 free throw attempts. The Aggies, led by head coach Chris Jans, emerged as regular season champions out of the WAC with a 14-4 record and earned the league’s automatic bid by defeating Grand Canyon and Abilene Christian to win the conference tournament. Speaking of upsets, 12-seed New Mexico State looked impressive in a 70-63 victory over UConn to set up Saturday's showdown with the Razorbacks. He is joined on the second-team by senior forward Johnny McCants, who pitched in 8.7 points and 5.3 boards per contest. The engine of the offense is redshirt senior guard Teddy Allen, who was recently named WAC Player of the Year, and showed why with a 37-point destruction of UConn Thursday night.

Vermont drops 75-71 decision to Arkansas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday at Buffalo, New York.

We just couldn't get stops, and then when we did, we couldn't get the rebound." "We tried in the first half to switch up our coverage every timeout so that they couldn't have a steady diet, and what we ended up going to was switching one through five and even switch some of their dribble hand-off actions, which was our plan C. We normally don't get even to a plan B." We wish we could have rebounded a little bit better at the end, but these guys left it all out on the court against a really, really good Arkansas team," Becker said. UVM made just 10 of 17 at the line; to Arkansas 20 of 25 effort. On the game's decisive sequence, Sullivan and Powell trapped Notae in the corner. Arkansas used a pair of 7-0 runs to earn a 34-27 halftime lead, an advantage built with leading scorer Notae held scoreless and on the bench with two fouls. The official initially called UVM possession when the ball bounced out of bounds. Umude followed with a pair of foul shots before Shungu rose for a wing 3-pointer to make it 73-71 game. "I think we're as close as can be," Davis said of advancing at the NCAA tourney. "(Notae) had a huge second half. And Davis wasn't the done. And, unfortunately, we didn't do that, but really I'm just so proud of these kids and this team.

Arkansas basketball's NCAA Tournament path clearer headed into second round (unknown)

"We expected to win the game," Arkansas coach Eric Musselman said. The road to an Elite 8 repeat got easier on paper Thursday, but there's still plenty of Madness to be had. Arkansas faced a similar situation in last season's tournament, albeit in a later round. Now, rather than facing UConn with a solid defense that dominates on the glass, Arkansas will take on a mid-major foe that, on paper, looks easier to get by. The Razorbacks advanced with a 75-71 win. Arkansas avoided the same fate as its high-seeded peers despite Vermont threatening in the second half.

What Vermont coach John Becker said about Arkansas Razorbacks (unknown)

"(We) had an incredible run through the conference tournament. Winning by I think 36.5 points and coming in really confidently, but know we have our hands full ...

And a lot of our guys have a lot of options and a lot of people pulling. "It's the best tournament in the world, the best sporting event in the world, and to be able to be part of it, it never gets old. We're going to have to take care of the ball and rebound, and then to give ourselves a chance." At all levels, but at the mid-major level and having to win your conference tournament, like this is what you work for all year, and so I feel really good for the players and the people that get to come to this and my staff. I feel like a day before any game, you know, where we have expectations that we're here to win, and the nerves of making sure that we're prepared enough and that we have the right game plan put together. I think it was in the semifinals of the CBI. We were both in the CBI that year, and we played out there, and they beat the heck out of us, and they played a similar, aggressive, athletic style. You just don't know, and you have to get into the game and feel the game a little bit and feel their athleticism and their size and things like that, and so -- but they're going to be really, really good defense. Then after the holidays we come back, and then we were making everything, and so -- and that's pretty much continued through for the rest of the year, and guys have gotten confidence now. Then we clinched a lead with five games to go, and then it got a little squirrely there for a couple of games, but then right back to it in the playoffs. Most of our guys have played in the tournament, and we've competed pretty well, and so we're going to have to play really, really well. "I was more worried about them in the championship game, you know, the pressure that that game has to it in a one-bid league where you got to win that game to get to here. We look more like a high major team more than ever just because of the athleticism and the size of our players.

Can the Catamounts pull off the upset? The keys to the Vermont-Arkansas matchup (unknown)

A look at the Vermont-Arkansas showdown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo, New York. Tip-off is 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

But they should pick their spots against an Arkansas team that is ranked 28th in pace of play, according to KenPom.com. Taking away the Razorbacks' preferred style should be a priority. Keep turnovers to single digits: The Catamounts are very good at limiting their mistakes, at 9.7 turnovers a game they rank 10th in the country; and their assist-to-turnover ratio places them sixth among nation's leaders. Make 10 or more 3-pointers: As I mentioned in my feature on how UVM turned into a juggernaut this winter, the America East champs generate a lot of open shots in their ball-screen motion offense. "We know the type of team that we are, and we also know that we can beat these teams that's in the tournament right now. "In past years, I've been a little looser and just kind of happy to be here," the 11th-year Catamount bench boss said. "But like I said earlier, it's not a team that has overwhelming size at the rim, so there will be opportunities to play and kind of finish down there as well."
