Ulysses by James Joyce (1920). Why not start with this doozy of a narrative? This book really is so fun. It employs “scrotumtightening” as an adjective within ...
The book is wonderful and strange, and invokes a temptation to simply list several of its sentences, and leave it at that—a temptation to which I’m willing to submit. “You know when the roof of your mouth starts politely folding your brain in half, and your chest flutters like a cathedral filled with bees? “My great-aunt kept chairs the way some people keep cats.” “I wake in a hurry, as if I’ve been blown out of sleep by a giant puff of wind.” “You’d do better to find a husband, never mind your hobbits.” Sure, you could buy yourself a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray and pass an evening in thoughtful reflection on hedonism and vanity. For the deep diver, though, Richard Ellmann’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography supplies a brilliant portrait of Wilde’s charm and complications, and this exploration of the books that influenced Wilde serves as both a different kind of window into his mind and an aspirational reading list. Last year’s The Magician is in conversation with that earlier work, and follows the German writer Thomas Mann from his childhood through to his exile in Switzerland in the 1930s, where he is obsessed with the diaries he’s left behind in Nazi-occupied Munich, which reveal the homosexuality he’s long kept hidden. Murdoch, who was born in Dublin in 1919 and died in Oxfordshire, UK, in 1999 is a thoughtful and hilarious writer, and this novel won her the Booker Prize following three previous nominations. The sea!,” incidentally one of the only phrases I’ve retained from my collegiate studies of Ancient Greek—when they crested a hill and caught sight of the ocean, and therefore friendly territory, following battle. (Those looking for further information on the Troubles might turn to Patrick Radden Keefe’s nonfiction saga, Say Nothing.) The novel centers on Mona, and swings between her life as a 20-something Irish immigrant living in Birmingham to her home in a seaside town some forty years later. Stephen eats breakfast with “stately, plump Buck Mulligan,” teaches a history class; Leopold eats “with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls,” and stews over his wife, Molly, and her lover. (It was taken from the turn-of-the-fourth-century philosopher and historian Xenophon’s description of members of the Greek army shouting Θάλαττα! Θάλαττα!—pronounced Thálatta! Thálatta! and meaning “The sea! In it, we follow Stephen Dedalus (who you may know from A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man), Leopold Bloom, and the friends and foes in their orbit, through their travels in Dublin on June 16, 1904.

"COVID is not terrorism, but it brought terror," the mayor told radio station WAXQ-FM. "And now we’re at the 9/12 moment when we march down in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Some communities in Florida, one of the first states to reopen its economy, were also bringing their parades back. The South’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration made a big comeback in Savannah, Georgia, where Irish immigrants and their descendants have held parades since 1824. Approximately 150,000 people march in the parade and around two million people line the streets to watch it. "This is the best thing that happened to us in two years," he said. "It’s like a little bit of normalcy is coming back." "Psychologically, it means a lot," said Sean Lane, the chair of the parade’s organizing group. The full parade was canceled for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But I think a lot of people feel like, wow, we could finally go to a parade and not worry. The 2020 parade was canceled just days before it was planned to take place as the virus first started spreading rapidly in the city.

Over the years, it has grown into a festive observance of Irish culture that extends deep into the night at restaurants and pubs. To keep the tradition going, organizers in 2020 and 2021 quietly held small parades on St. Patrick’s Day, right around sunrise, when the streets were empty. “COVID is not terrorism, but it brought terror,” the mayor told radio station WAXQ-FM. “And now we’re at the 9/12 moment when we march down in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. An ominous acceleration in infections quickly cascaded into broad shutdowns.

The Irish began observing St. Patrick's Day around the 10th century, where the first feast was held on March 17 in recognition of St. Patrick's death.
We Irish found ourselves invoking some of the most basic values embodied in the story of St. Patrick – values such as solidarity, care, kindness and compassion.
That great spirit is one we must extend to all those with whom we share this planet. It is also a recognition of the shared humanity by which we are bound together and which is so essential to the crafting of an ethical world. A dark shadow has now been cast across our world as we witness the unfolding events in Ukraine. We saw, in villages, towns and suburbs across the country, people coming together to help each other. St. Patrick came to Irish shores as an outsider, an exile, a migrant. What a failure on vaccines the world has suffered. This is a matter far from finished for so many of our citizens. Our diaspora and their families in Ireland were called to make difficult painful sacrifices. During that time of the Pandemic at its worst we learned so much about the cost of the decisions made and ethics on which true social solidarity must be built. Wherever they may be, Irish people gather to celebrate the rich culture and heritage that speaks so profoundly of a shared past. We witnessed the power of an appeal for supportive, collective action in reducing public health risks. These are values that the migrant Patrick could see as serving all humanity.

Though the event is shortened this year due to the ongoing pandemic, it's a welcome return to normalcy for revelers. In the past it's attracted the likes of Kevin Bacon, Ralph Macchio and Joey Fatone and this year will be led by celebrity grand marshal Cheech Marin and parade starter Danny Trejo. A tradition since 2004, it brings together up to 30,000 people who line the 98-ft.-long Bridge Street to catch a glimpse of marchers and celebrity grand marshals. Chicago kicked things off this past Saturday, March 12, by once again dyeing its eponymous river green and opening the event to onlookers after it was done quietly last year as to not attract crowds. More than 150,000 marchers are expected to entertain upwards of 2 million spectators, per Thrillist, over the course of five hours. The color lasts about 48 hours.
Reporter Will Peebles rises before the sun to document 2022 Grand Marshall Danny Powers's St. Patrick's Day.
Powers gave a big thumbs up to the congregation. And this is the third year since we’ve had a parade, so I haven’t been able to see a lot of those folks in a while," Powers said. On the bus ride there, Powers was accompanied by his aides and a few members of the executive committee. With a gentle pat on Roush's shoulder, Powers rose to address the committee. That and the mass. His series of pre-parade events started with a breakfast at the Mansion on Forsyth, the first of five for the morning. During breakfast, Powers sat with 2020 Grand Marshal Mike Roush, the most recent Irishman to hold the title. All the ceremony and tradition and work involved in planning the St. Patrick's Day parade was over. The parade usually has around 200 floats, up to as many as 250 some years. The city handles everything outside of it. Fogarty went over a few last-minute reminders with the parade committee's adjutant staff. And the only thing standing between Powers and the 10:15 a.m. parade start was time.

The Starland District expansion was a great change for Dan, who has more of the city to celebrate in as the remainder of the day arrives. He’s celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah for the past two years, and the change between the two has already been significant. Carole Carr and Charles Stevenson celebrated the 198th St. Patrick’s Day donned in shiny green and gold. The two agreed that the city just wasn’t the same with the lack of celebration. After the parade, she went straight to Starland Yard to wind down and enjoy. “I call this my St. Patrick’s day uniform,” said Kohler, gesturing to his eclectic blend of blazer, head wrap and pleather gloves. Ferris Key and Emma Jane Moody are enjoying their spring break by helping to guard a booth at the parade. We caught Allen just outside of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Dressed as a leprechaun, he performed magic tricks.
