2022 March Madness, Notre Dame Men’s Basketball (unknown)

Pat spoke to Aaron Breitman, Managing Editor at On The Banks, to get the lowdown on the Irish's First Four opponent for this evening.

They also need to make Notre Dame work on the defensive end and also force them to get back in transition. He was the first Rutgers player to shoot 39% from three-point range in a season last year for the first time in five years. Aaron Breitman: Rutgers has to defend well on the perimeter or I think they will face an uphill battle to win the game. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, he came through off the bench to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds to beat Clemson. It was the program’s first win in the big dance in 38 years. I think that leads to McConnell needing to play a strong game defensively in which he is disruptive. I know that will be tough to do against Notre Dame but I expect RU to try and mix things up to try and force the Irish into mistakes. He isn’t a great shooter but he has the ability to catch fire and has made countless big shots over the years. A two-time finalist for the Julius Erving Award for the best small forward in college basketball, Harper Jr. is shooting 40% from three, has tremendous body control and ability to draw contact near the rim, while also shooting 80% from the foul line. In a nutshell, Rutgers has proven they can literally beat or lose to any team in the country. Last season, they were four minutes away from knocking off Houston and going to the Sweet 16 before blowing a 9 point lead. There was a winnable month in January they squandered with a stretch of three losses in four games against the bottom of the league teams. He completely changed the culture and trajectory of the program and while it took time, it was still faster than anyone had imagined he could do it in.

NCAA Tournament: Rutgers' season ends with epic First Four ... (nj.com)

Rutgers' season ended in heartbreaking fashion with a double-overtime loss to Notre Dame in the First Four Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio.

But Atkinson — who scored a game-high 26 points on 13-of-15 shooting — fought his way to the basket, pulled down an offensive rebound and laid it in with two seconds remaining. Rutgers led by two points with eight seconds to play in overtime, only to give up a tying layup six seconds later. Rutgers went six minutes without a field goal, allowing the Irish to retake the lead with an 11-3 run. They also depart with two consecutive heart-breaking losses in the NCAA Tournament, leaving them to wonder what might have been. The game swung back-and-forth from the start, the teams trading leads six times in the first 14 minutes, neither leading by more than four points. In overtime, they were up by a point, then down by one, up by two and tied — before being forced into a second overtime.

Includes how to watch, stats, quotes from both teams, keys to victory and more.

I think the experience they had last season in the big dance and the experience of fighting their way back helps them make a run. The players have admitted when they haven’t played to their potential at times and we’ve seen what they’re capable of when they do. But at the end of the day, my mindset right now is on this tournament and on Notre Dame.” And you appreciate that coming from a guy who has been in the business a long time and has won at the high level he’s won at and done it the right way. Notre Dame’s Paul Atkinson Jr. is the former Ivy League Player of the Year and is solid, but as a whole the Irish frontcourt is not very physical. And they have a lot of answers. And from a great family and a great student, all the things you want in a basketball player. My dad, my family grew up here and they grew up in the city and they played basketball here. And one of the keys is going to be can you guard your own guy, because these guys will square up on you and they’re going to take you off the dribble. “A team that’s got a lot of really talented players, especially two elite guards who can drive the ball and make plays and get to the rim. You know a little bit of my relationship with Chris Christie, Governor Christie. He was a Delaware guy, and we got to know each other back in the day. Rutgers vs. Notre Dame: Complete recap of First Four matchup in ... (Asbury Park Press)

Rutgers and Notre Dame are meeting in Dayton for their First Four matchup in the NCAA Tournament. The winner will take on Alabama.

The team scored just under 68 points per game, which ranked 12th in the Big Ten. Another byproduct of Rutgers' struggles with the mobile Atkinson is foul trouble. Excellent offense by the Scarlet Knights, but their calling card all season has been defense. Bit of a slower pace to start the second frame, which should favor Rutgers' style of play. Omoruyi has been a bigger factor in the second half with seven points, but the Scarlet Knights need their senior core of Baker, Harper and McConnell to carry them here late. The senior heaves up a prayer, and it is answered to put Rutgers on top. Mulcahy and Hubb exchange layups, as Notre Dame continues to excel at the rim. Notre Dame 53, Rutgers 51: 8:56 left in 2H Notre Dame 62, Rutgers 58: 6:08 left in 2H Harper responds by turning it over via a charge, leading to an easy lay-in from Laszewski.
