Thursday's live updates as NCAA Tournament chaos begins (unknown)

The madness officially begins today with 16 games in the men's NCAA Tournament first round and two more First Four games in the women's field tonight.

Self is making $10.2 million this season as the Jayhawks have another team capable of making a title run. 9-seed game (1:45 p.m. ET, TNT) is at the top of the list. The Bruins are starting to get healthy at the right time and could be trouble an issue for teams that overlook them. "Not being able to communicate has me crying my eyes out," Vitale, 82, told USA TODAY Sports through text messages. Eli Brooks, Frankie Collins and Kobe Bufkin are expected to assume a majority of the ball-handling duties. Michigan's top point guard DeVante' Jones did not travel with the team to Indianapolis due to a concussion. Vitale was set to have an evaluation to check his voice on March 16 – the day before the first round of the men's NCAA Tournament. While there are sleepers in the field, there are also teams that either have no business in the tournament or could find their way back home before the first weekend is gone. The madness officially begins today with a slate of 16 games in the men's NCAA Tournament first round and two more First Four games in the women's field tonight. On the women's side, Longwood battles Mount Saint Marry's in a battle for the No. 16 seed (7 p.m.) while Missouri State takes on Florida State for the No. 11 seed. The Bears play Norfolk State in an East Region matchup, and in the Midwest Region, the Jayhawks play in the day's latest tipoff as they entertain Texas Southern, who won their First Four game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Among the featured matchups on the men's side: No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga begins its quest for an elusive championship as it takes on No. 16 Georgia State. Two other top seeds, Baylor and Kansas, are also in action.

Players who could make a big impact in the NCAA Tournament (unknown)

Each year we see March Madness turn certain players into stars, and we're breaking down five guys you should keep an eye on during this NCAA Tournament.

Playing for a small school at Chattanooga, he has the chance to become this year’s Abmas if his team is able to pull off an upset of Illinois in the Round of 64.If you or a loved one has questions or needs to talk to a professional about gambling, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit 1800gambler.net for more information.Best March Madness sportsbook promotions and offers for betting the NCAA Tournament in New YorkMarch Madness bracket bets: Odds and picks for Thursday’s First Round NCAA Tournament games He should be really fun to watch in the tournament.Looking for a guy from a sleeper team to keep an eye on who could break out if his team pulls off an upset? Nine times this season he’s scored 25-plus points in a game, and he is a great shooter. He ranks ninth nationally in three-point percentage, and is a heady player on both sides of the ball. Houston is scrappy, and Carlton helps set the tone for a team full of grit. He’s highly versatile, and unlocks a lot for CSU. He’s a large part of the reason they came out of nowhere this season, and he could be the next mid-major star in the making.New players can click here to sign up with this FanDuel Sportsbook promo code and lock in this $150 instant bonus.Josh Carlton didn’t play a huge role during the first four years of his college career at UConn. He decided to play for Houston as a grad transfer, and boy did it work out. The senior is seventh in the country in assist:turnover ratio, and that kind of disciplined guard play is extremely important at this time of year. He leads the Rams in both rebounding and scoring, and he can knock down threes as well. The veteran big man can really wreck things in the paint, and he ranks fifth nationally in offensive rebounding rate. Injuries in the Cougars’ front-court gave Carlton a huge opportunity, and he’s taken advantage so far. Griffin is now a key piece for Duke, and he’s a deadly sniper from beyond the arc. It’s a busy time of year, but in every tournament there are a handful of players who manage to rise above the madness and become household names.

March Madness Games, Start Times, TV Schedule, Predictions (unknown)

Matchups, start times, TV schedule, and predictions for every game for the first day of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. March Madness Round of 64 overview.

The top overall seed Gonzaga (26-3) landed the most favorable location in relation to campus, Portland. They take on Georgia State (18-10) who– despite being a 16 seed– is a very strong team. Kansas (28-6) is the tournament's third-ranked one seed and spearheads the Midwest region. Don't say we didn't warn you about UConn (23-9). The Huskies are highly rated by KenPom and stack up in nearly every metric to the best of the best. While Saint Peter's (19-11) is looking for a shocking upset, they drew the short stick here. Richmond (23-12) made a surprise run in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament and won it as a six seed. Typically, playing in the First Four is an advantage and followed up by a cross-country trek isn't encouraging. Memphis (21-10) has a long way to fly to make this game, which is being held in Portland. Boise State (27-7) on the other hand has a short 90 minute flight to Portland, easing their travel. The defending champion Baylor Bears (26-6) take on Norfolk State (24-6), who is making their second straight tournament appearance. They open their tournament against Longwood (26-6), who is making their first NCAA Tournament appearance ever. South Dakota State (30-4) rosters one of the best offenses in the nation. No, but it makes this a candidate for an upset (Memphis is favored despite being the lower seed). In fact, the Jackrabbits opened with the narrowest point spread of any 13-seed versus a four-seed (two points).

Bringing March Madness to the NHL (unknown)

Get your brackets ready: Matching each NHL squad with a team from the men's NCAA tournament.

Kentucky (No. 2 seed, East Region). Bluebloods in their respective sports, the Wildcats and the Maple Leafs have skilled squads but tough roads through the postseason. Rutgers (First Four No. 11 seed, West Region). The Scarlet Knights received one of the last at-large bids for the tournament, and there’s a case to be made that their spot should’ve gone elsewhere. Loyola Chicago (No. 10 seed, South Region). Don’t the Jets feel like a mid-major? As Flames coach Darryl Sutter said of whichever team draws Colorado in the first round, “It’s going to be a waste of eight days.” Iowa State (No. 11 seed, Midwest Region). The Cyclones started the season 12–0, but that was a long time ago. The Bruins, too, could end up victims of a beastly division; they’re currently in the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Jacksonville State (No. 15 seed, Midwest Region). Bellarmine, not Jacksonville State, won the Atlantic Sun tournament, but was ineligible for the NCAA tournament as a program in transition from Division II. So instead, the Gamecocks received the bid from the conference. The Canucks still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs—as of right now they sit just outside a wild-card spot in the Western Conference—but Vancouver most likely will find itself in the same boat as Texas A&M. Both teams have played better in the second half of their seasons, but it’s probably too late for New York to follow SDSU to the postseason. But Wyoming ended the season 4–6, including a First Four loss to Indiana; Ottawa is 3–7 in its last 10. The Canadiens lost 10 games in a row starting in late January, but since that streak ended, they are 8-3-1 in their last 12 contests. The Blackhawks are basking in former glory themselves as they try to rebuild.

How Florida Found Its Way Back to the NCAA Tournament (unknown)

Around once a month throughout the regular season, Florida coach Kelly Rae Finley carved out time for her team to gather and, at least for a few minutes, ...

“Her patience and her willingness to understand us beyond the scope of being just basketball players, that’s her greatest asset,” Broughton says. The university said in a statement this fall regarding Newbauer that there “were concerns brought” to its attention. As Florida stormed up the SEC standings, Finley dismissed questions about whether and when she would have the interim tag lifted from her title. Led by Smith and Broughton, who combined for 55 points, the Gators emerged victorious in double overtime, setting off a locker-room celebration full of splashing water and joyous hugs. … This look of we’re going all in, and we’ll live with whatever the outcome is.” “When you trust a person, you don’t want to disappoint them and you can see that’s how it is with the team now.” Creating spaces to be vulnerable has been a theme for the program. “I’m grateful to have a coach, and a person, in my life that I’m comfortable having those conversations with.” So that night she texted Finley asking to meet the next day. “When you can connect with each of us on a different level, it’s very special,” Smith says. Around once a month throughout the regular season, Florida coach Kelly Rae Finley carved out time for her team to gather and, at least for a few minutes, not think about basketball. And UF’s 21 wins are the school’s most since ’15–16. On Saturday, the No. 10 seed Gators will return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in six years and meet No. 7 seed UCF in the first round.

Ten Years After No. 15 Seed Lehigh Slayed a Giant (unknown)

CJ McCollum and the Mountain Hawks look back on an epic March upset a decade later and explain why it was no fluke.

McCollum is busy leading the Pelicans to the play-in tournament in the Western Conference. Reed is on the recruiting trail after completing his 15th season as Lehigh’s coach. Members of Lehigh’s 2011–12 team will be tied to one another for decades to come, with the win over Duke culminating a magical three-year journey. He never made a return to the court as a college player. “I said, ‘Let people watch me; let them critique me.’” McCollum was a likely first-round selection in the 2012 NBA draft if he didn’t return to Lehigh. He eschewed millions in guaranteed money to make a name for himself on a national stage as a senior. Reed recalls having to bring the freshman to the bench early in the game, a move that allowed him to “refocus and regather.” Kansas’s lead was cut to six with just 13 minutes remaining, though the classic tournament narrative followed. Lehigh narrowly lost at Bucknell in the conference tournament in 2011, falling by two in front of a raucous crowd. A revenge win over Bucknell in the ’12 conference final sent Lehigh back to the NCAA tournament, and the wide-eyed group that lost to the Jayhawks in ’10 returned to March Madness with a steely focus, this time brimming with self-belief. The upset of a lifetime would have to wait. “So I explored my options and made the decision to go to Bethlehem, Pa.” “We were in the gym from Day 1,” Knutson says. A self-proclaimed “undersized center,” he packed on just more than 200 pounds on his 6'9" frame, earning his way to a Division I scholarship through a combination of offensive craft and skill. The opening tip of every NCAA tournament signals the opening of possibility.

March Madness odds, picks, predictions for Thursday's Round 1 NCAA Tournament games (unknown)

The 2022 NCAA Tournament is finally here, and Thursday's first-round action features some of the bluest of blue bloods, including Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, ...

Kentucky isn't playing too far from home in Indianapolis, and it will certainly have the talent edge over Saint Peter's. The Wildcats are just 7-6 ATS in non-conference games this year, but their average margin of victory is 22.8 points. Saint Mary's is the more efficient shooting team, though, and with an 18-11-1 record ATS this year, they have done a pretty good job taking care of business. If it's not, Arkansas' edge on the boards and defensive pressure will likely result in easy fast-break buckets and a likely double-digit victory (which we saw last year when Arkansas beat Colgate by 17 in a similar first-round matchup). Defense is less variable than shooting, so it's safer to pick Arkansas. But, let's face it -- it's definitely more fun to take Vermont. Let's have some fun. It would be nice if the Zips were a little better from deep (35.6 percent), but we still think Akron can hang around enough to squeak out a late cover. Perhaps even more noteworthy is that the Aggies were 4-0 ATS as an underdog compared to UConn being 12-14-1 as a favorite. Gonzaga won by 43 against Norfolk State in the first round of last year's tournament and by 38 over Fairleigh-Dickinson in the first round in 2019. However, the Spartans have not played a defense like Baylor's, and in their most comparable game this year, they lost by 40 to Xavier back in November. They also lost by 43 to Gonzaga in the first round of last year's tournament. Tennessee is as hot as any team in the country right now, and even though Longwood is on an impressive win streak itself, the Vols shouldn't be in any danger of losing. North Carolina grades out noticeably better in the Kenpom Ratings, largely because of its more efficient offense, and while Marquette plays more efficient defense, UNC rebounds at a significantly better rate. Memphis is a better shooting and rebounding team, but Boise has the edge in defensive efficiency. Colorado State is a better outside shooting team, though, so if the Rams get hot, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them get up big on the frustratingly inconsistent Wolverines. Michigan is just 8-14 ATS as a favorite this year, so it makes sense to take the higher-seeded Rams considering you're getting points. The only thing missing is advice to help with your bets, but don't worry, that's why we're here.
