Dave Dombrowski's Red Sox successor Chaim Bloom gave a resounding endorsement of the Phillies executive bringing Kyle Schwarber to Philadelphia.
However veteran DH JD Martinez had not opted in to his final year with the Sox, this conversation might be very different. ““We’re trying to stay focused on chasing down things that make sense for us. That's a lot of money. Schwarber, 29, was the 4th overall pick of the 2014 draft by the Chicago Cubs out of the University of Indiana. Schwarber was a catcher ...
Fangraphs had Schwarber at #20 on their board, with both the median crowdsourced contract and Ben Clemens’ projected contract coming in at 4 years, $60 million. Kiley McDaniel had Schwarber ranked #21 on his free agent board, projecting he would get 3 years, $45 million. Schwarber signed a one year, $7 million deal with the Washington Nationals and had his best season in the majors.
Schwarber carries obvious middle-of-the-order power appeal with 81 home runs the last three seasons, two fewer than Bryce Harper and one fewer than Freddie ...
He is one of the three best hitters on the team and over the course of a six-month regular season, the plate appearances lost hitting fifth vs. This would achieve the goal of splitting up the team's top two left-handed hitters, though it's probably lower than you'd want Schwarber in the lineup. Harper hit third in more than 90% of his plate appearances last season, so if he's staying there, the only way to split up him and Schwarber would be batting Schwarber leadoff or fifth. Last season, 17 of his 32 homers came out of the leadoff spot and eight were to start the first inning. Keep in mind that the bottom third of this lineup is in flux and could involve a host of players: Bohm, Stott, Herrera, Matt Vierling, Johan Camargo, any other bench bat the Phillies sign. The reason you wouldn't want to bat Schwarber high in the order is to give him more RBI opportunities.
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement to sign free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

After the Philadelphia Phillies finally gave out a lucrative contract to Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper raved about his new teammate.
He publicly criticized the farm system – or lack thereof – the Phillies overhauled the Player Development department, hiring Preston Mattingly from the San Diego Padres and Anirudh Kilambi from the Tamp Bay Rays. Ironically, not much ended up changing after the lockout. Schwarber will join Harper for four years, on a $79M contract.
The Phillies have agreed to a deal with free-agent outfielder Kyle Schwarber, a source told MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. The club has not confirmed.

8:54am: Schwarber and the Phillies have agreed to a four-year deal with an annual value just shy of $20MM, tweets Jayson Stark of The Athletic.
Time will tell just how the front office will proceed, but the addition of Schwarber to a lineup that ranked 15th in the Majors in home runs and 13th in runs scored will provide a notable jolt in production. Slow start to the year notwithstanding, Schwarber hit .266/.374/.554 with a whopping 32 home runs in just 471 plate appearances during the regular season. In 168 plate appearances with the Red Sox down the stretch, he turned in a huge .291/.435/.522 slash with seven homers and 10 doubles as the Red Sox surged to an AL East division title. Bryce Harper is, of course, locked into right field, but the rest of the outfield remains in a state of flux. That astonishing run was cut short by a hamstring strain that sidelined him for more than a month, but the Red Sox had no qualms about trading for Schwarber even while he was on the injured list. The longtime Cubs left fielder was non-tendered by Chicago after the 2020 season but parlayed a one-year deal with the Nationals (and a subsequent trade to the Red Sox) into a surefire multi-year deal in his second foray into free agency.
Schwarber was an All-Star in 2021 and joins a Phillies lineup that features reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper.
He finished with 32 home runs and 71 RBI in 113 regular-season games. Between 2017-19, he hit 30, 26 and 38 homers, respectively. Opponents already had to account for one slugging lefty in the middle of the Philadelphia Phillies' lineup in Bryce Harper, the reigning National League MVP.
Kyle Schwarber, has penned a deal with the Phillies for four years with an average annual value of $20 million per year, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports ...
Schwarber slashed .291/.435/.522 with seven jacks with the Red Sox and brought a voice with him into the clubhouse. The bright side is that it shouldn’t be hard to replace Schwarber’s talent because of his versatility. He only played 41 games this past season and Red Sox fans treated him like a seasoned veteran with the team. We traded for him while he was injured, and missed games with the Sox at the beginning of his tenure knowing that his contract was up at the end of the season. They have an absolutely loaded farm system, and there is so much talent to pick from. Wow. This is disheartening because there aren’t many Red Sox fans that didn’t want him back.
CLEARWATER, Fla. — After the Phillies came off the practice fields Tuesday, Bryce Harper spoke with owner John Middleton and the front office about the ...
We didn’t really change anything about Kyle. That was just a spot in the order where he was able to fit in a little bit better.” With the designated hitter slated to come to the National League in the new collective bargaining agreement, it’s possible Schwarber preferred to wait to sign until after the lockout. He also brings considerable postseason experience, having won the World Series with Chicago in 2016 and reached the playoffs in all but one year of his career. Schwarber is a selective hitter with a .343 career on-base percentage. But he also had success in the leadoff spot last year for the Washington Nationals. The Phillies lack an obvious candidate to lead off. Schwarber is coming off the best year of his career after being nontendered by the Cubs after the shortened 2020 season. But the strategy, which didn’t work out last year, will be to outhit their deficiencies in the field. A year ago, the Phillies used 11 leadoff hitters who combined for a .302 on-base percentage, worst in the National League and second-worst in baseball after of the Texas Rangers (.280). “It was something like I’ve never seen before in baseball,” said new Phillies reliever Brad Hand, Schwarber’s teammate in Washington. “It’s just not that he was hot. Phillies officials were unable to comment on the 29-year-old left fielder because the agreement is pending a physical. The Phillies have below-average defenders at almost every position, including now in left field. It’s unclear where Schwarber will slot into the lineup.
Bryce Harper endorsed a potential Schwarber signing this week when discussing the Phillies potentially signing one of the ex-Cubs hitters on the free agent ...
They've agreed to a deal with another outfielder — Japanese free agent Seiya Suzuki. Schwarber put together a career year in 2021 after the Cubs non-tendered him last offseason. The Phillies have agreed to a deal with former Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reported Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Phillies are signing Kyle Schwarber to a four-year deal. The slugger hit 32 home runs in 2021 and will bring power to the lineup.
The hiring was actually one of the first indicators that Schwarber would consider the Phillies as a landing spot in free agency. He set new career highs in every section of his slash line, hitting .266/.374/.554 with a .928 OPS and 32 home runs, including 16 in 18 games in June. A hamstring injury sidelined him midseason, limiting him to 113 games, but he still managed to have one of the best seasons of his career. Of course, they could’ve just bucked up and exceeded the tax, but that’s an issue for another, less happy day.
The Chicago Cubs didn't allow things to end well with Kyle Schwarber. Unfortunately, he has another new MLB team and the Cubs are not it.
It is a great deal for both sides as they look to have some success together in the future. They had an MVP-winning Bryce Harper, a Cy Young runner up in Zack Wheeler, and multiple other stars at the top of their game and they still couldn’t even make the Wild Card Game. Schwarber should be able to help with that. Now, adding Schwarber might be the slugger that they need. The Cubs let him go after 2022 in favor of Joc Pederson which was a terrible move. There were rumors that the Cubs were trying to pursue Schwarber after he was amazing in 2021.
The Phillies were looking for another big bat. Now they've got one. By Jim Salisbury.

The Phillies have found their leadoff hitter as the club inks free agent Kyle Schwarber to deal.
A hefty payday for the slugger. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal originally reported that Philadelphia was "making progress" on the free agent on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, it was announced by NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury that the Phillies had finally signed the free agent Schwarber to a deal.
As for the potential market implications, the immediate one that comes to mind is Kris Bryant. Philadelphia (or maybe just Bryce Harper) has been courting Kris ...
That could increase the pressure on Bryant to sign with one of his other interested teams in Seattle or Colorado. And one of the hottest names out there – Kyle Schwarber – may have his new deal in place with the Philadelphia Phillies. Maybe that rumor was for more leverage against Suzuki? Maybe it was always an either/or thing?

Bryce Harper approves. "This is huge for us," the most impactful Phillies player and voice said after learning that the team had reached a deal with Kyle ...
"In this clubhouse, we're here to win," Harper said. "He's going to fit well in this clubhouse." "Anywhere he hits, he'll help us," Harper said. Schwarber ranked high on the Phillies' offseason wish list not just for his offense, but also for his competitiveness and postseason resume. Schwarber saw extensive time in the leadoff spot with Washington last season, including in the month of June when he belted 16 homers for the Nationals. Bryson Stott could change the math if he looks ready during the Grapefruit League. That could push Gregorius to third and Bohm back to Triple A.
Philadelphia might've just found a new leadoff hitter.
The Phillies currently have need of another outfielder but could also use the 29-year-old at first-base, which he played at times in Boston last year. He also thrived in the leadoff spot, racking up a .385 on-base percentage and a 1.216 OPS in 27 total games. In 113 games with the Nationals and the Red Sox, he batted a combined .266 with 32 home runs, 71 RBIs and a .928 OPS on the way to his first-ever All-Star nod.
Schwarber is in agreement on a deal with the Phillies, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. The ...
The Phillies have failed to make the playoffs in each of Harper's first three seasons with the team. Schwarber has experience hitting in multiple spots in the batting order, including leadoff where he thrived with the Nationals last season. In Philadelphia, Schwarber figures to play left field and provide another power bat for a loaded order.
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement to sign free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber, sources confirm to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
He's a classic slugger who might still have upside at the plate, as he showed in 2021. On the bigger stage of a pennant race, Schwarber produced again, compiling a .291 batting average in 41 games. He signed with the Washington Nationals, hitting 25 home runs in 72 games before being traded to the Boston Red Sox. That all came crashing down in 2020, when he hit just .188 with 11 home runs playing in 59 of 60 games. It gives us another bat in the lineup," Harper said. "Being able to add somebody like that is going to help us that much more."
Schwarber is in agreement on a deal with the Phillies, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. The ...
