What IU basketball can expect from Saint Mary's in first-round matchup (unknown)

After defeating Wyoming in the First Four, Indiana plays another slow, deliberate mid-major power from the West in St. Mary's on Thursday.

The Gaels will be fresh, so the Hoosiers will need to hope momentum is enough to counteract their own fatigue. The Hoosiers will certainly try to push the pace again and try to create havoc, but they need to be careful about how exactly they do that so they don't play into Saint Mary's hands. They get 37.4% of their shots there, and make 63.9% of their shots around the rim. Saint Mary's is 338th in tempo and 327th in possession length. That being said, the Hoosiers sometimes seemed bothered by Wyoming's deliberate nature, with point guard Xavier Johnson in particular running into trouble when he tried to push the pace too fast. Thursday's game against Saint Mary's will be the Hoosiers' fifth game in seven days. They managed to cause 19 turnovers, getting sturdy Wyoming point guard Hunter Maldonado to give the ball away a surprising 10 times. Meanwhile, Saint Mary's hasn't played a game in 10 days since its WCC title game loss to Gonzaga on March 7 and it only had to travel up the coast to play this one. Mike Woodson continues to point out these Indiana players are in their late teens and early 20s, so they have energy he wishes he still had. The Gaels' 6-10, 245-pound center Matthias Tass makes it difficult to grab rebounds over him, and forwards Kyle Bowen and Alex Ducas have size as well. But they don't give up a lot of easy ones and they don't give up second-chance opportunities. IU made just 2-of-13 3s against Wyoming and is 10-of-42 from 3-point range in its past three games.

What to expect (unknown)

Indiana traveled west early Wednesday morning and will play Saint Mary's on Thursday in the 2022 NCAA tournament first round at the Moda Center in Portland, ...

Tass is shooting 64.9 percent at the rim, per Hoop-Math. He’s a good, but not great, post-up scoring option with .937 points per possession on post-ups, per Synergy. That ranks in the 72nd percentile nationally. Saint Mary’s has not played since losing to Gonzaga on March 8 and Thursday’s game will be Indiana’s fifth in eight days. Their opponents are rebounding just 21.9 percent of their missed shots, the fourth-lowest percentage in the country. The Gaels have the seventh-best 2-point field goal percentage defense in the country at 58.6 percent allowed. Mullins is a 3-point threat and is 21-of-57 from distance on the season. Johnson has the 74th best steal percentage in the country, per KenPom. His 11.5 points per game are third on Saint Mary’s, but he’s shooting just 43.2 percent from the field and 29.3 percent on 3s. Bowen is a good athlete who averages just 5.9 points in 29.5 minutes per game. He’s also shooting 61.1 percent at the rim, according to Hoop-Math. Kuhse ranks in the 84th percentile nationally in ball screens, per Synergy Sports, and is by far the most effective Saint Mary’s player with the ball in his hands. The backcourt leaders are seniors Tommy Kuhse and Logan Johnson. The 6-foot-2 Kuhse, who is in his sixth season of college basketball, is a 46.9 percent 3-point shooter and the leading facilitator for the Gaels. Kuhse’s 3.6 assists per game lead the team. All six of Saint Mary’s top contributors are upperclassmen and four of them are seniors. Both are capable 3-point shooters with Ducas shooting 38.6 percent from distance and Bowen at 39.2 percent. Saint Mary’s, led by coach Randy Bennett, beat Gonzaga in Moraga this season and is a veteran team hungry for tournament success.

Mike Woodson says Indiana basketball 'answered the bell' in First Four win over Wyoming (unknown)

After the game, Woodson, Jackson-Davis and Geronimo all spoke to the media in Dayton about the win and what comes next. Here is what those Hoosiers said to the ...

It was a total team effort and we'll need it moving forward." And I thought tonight they answered the bell loud and clear." And you get to see it on display, and I think that's really cool." "I hope we have a heck of a crowd out there. I thought early on we couldn't find offense and they couldn't find it. Even though shots didn't fall tonight, just being able to get our feet wet with the tournament, kind of what's going on with the balls and everything, I thought it was good for us." I mean, if we left the 3-point shooters and doubled him, then that exposes us in that category. You reap what you sow, and he's reaping the benefits." So I just used what I had." And then just being on this national stage, I thought it was really cool." And I just trusted my feeling, trusted how I felt. While some might consider the First Four to be a bit of a reach for the tournament, the Hoosiers are having success in March and could be rolling once the round of 64 kicks off.

Hopefully, we can keep that as a consistent thing, go to the tournament every year and have a chance to win the whole thing.” For the guys to get back and have a chance to experience that is unbelievable. For Indiana basketball, it's finally all about the present now (unknown)

With an NCAA Tournament win, the current batch of Hoosiers is erasing Indiana basketball's need to keep living in the past.

Somehow the Cowboys were just a solitary made 3-pointer from making this a game in the final minute. They’re 186th in the country for a reason. The Hoosiers were just 2 of 13 from 3-point range. It’s from that very place that Indiana hired Woodson’s predecessor, who for the most part left Woodson with a lot of catching up to do in Year 1. The Cowboys were 38th in fewest steals allowed, and 62nd in overall turnovers. It was the 3rd-best NCAA Tournament scoring debut for an Indiana player in program history. There have been times, albeit brief, when the Hoosiers have jumped to the present. Indiana harassed Wyoming into a season-high 19 turnovers. “It’s going to be my job to bridge the gap between young people who don’t know who coach Woodson is,” he said at his introductory press conference. Mike Davis’ unexpected run to the national championship game in 2002. These are legitimately good players who looked like they were grabbing a buttered basketball. Expert predictions for NCAA Tournament first round game (unknown)

See odds, expert predictions and tv channel for Indiana vs. Saint Mary's in the NCAA Tournament first round game.

Though Indiana limped into the dance with a 9-11 conference record, the Hoosiers are an NCCA Tournament institution with 40 appearances and five national championships in the trophy case (even if the last one came in 1987); Saint Mary’s is making its 11th trip to the dance. Offensively, expect to see a healthy dose of Indiana big man Trayce Jackson-Davis, who has been on an absolute tear in the postseason—between Big Ten Tournament play and the First Four victory, Jackson-Davis is averaging 26.25 PPG and 8.5 RPG. According to KenPom, Indiana finished with a 92.2 adjusted defensive efficiency rating; Saint Mary’s with a 90.1 rating—the Gaels play slow (but with great fundamentals!), finishing 338th in adjusted tempo.

Jordan Geronimo's energy ignites Indiana past Wyoming, helps keep Hoosiers dancing (unknown)

Unfortunately for Maldonado, Jordan Geronimo was on the floor. As Maldonado rose up, Geronimo slid down from near the elbow and exploded into the air. Then ...

Then Geronimo did it again with 12 seconds remaining in the half. So Geronimo decided to stay at IU. “I just felt like he’d be the best guy to get me where I want to go,” Geronimo said of Woodson. “Just from a young age, when I played basketball, she always just tell me to always play hard and, you know, just leave everything on the court and good things will happen. Geronimo was open in the corner and drained the three. And so I just took that with me throughout the basketball career and, yeah, it’s been good to me.” Unlike the other three members of the 2020 recruiting class, Geronimo isn’t from the state of Indiana. Asked how he’d get time on the court, he said “Just be an athlete. It has been a journey for Geronimo to get to this moment. It was arguably the most important performance in his career at IU. Because some of the things he does is just out of this world.” He was crucial in Indiana’s 66-58 win over Wyoming. In a game that seemed to slog by, and in which Indiana’s offense struggled, the Hoosiers needed a spark. With both hands, he snatched the ball right from Maldonado, securing it and bringing it down.
