A sixth-round draft pick, Echols still has a lot to prove. And so does Saleh, who went 4-13 as a rookie head coach last season, thanks partly to his underperforming — and undermanned — defense.Douglas has yet to give that defense a boost this offseason, while also losing a top run stopper, tackle Foley Fatukasi, to the Jaguars. But he still has time and options to improve this defense. The top three corners this year are LSU’s Derek Stingley, Washington’s Trent McDuffie, and Cincinnati’s Ahmad Gardner. Stingley is clearly the best of that trio — and could be available at No. 4.Bottom line: Douglas needs to give second-year coach Robert Saleh — a defensive-minded guy — more to work with in his secondary. The Jets finished 31st last season in PFF’s defensive ratings, including 30th in coverage. So yeah, they could use some help, even though they saw flashes of potential last season from their young starters at cornerback — second-year pro Bryce Hall and rookie Brandin Echols. Hall finished 39th in PFF’s cornerback ratings (35th in coverage). Echols was 75th and 69th. So perhaps he will wait until next month’s NFL Draft to address the position. One veteran option currently available in free agency — Stephon Gilmore, though his play has declined recently.
Reported suitors for Stephon Gilmore are looking elsewhere, with Raiders still reportedly interested in the Pro Bowl free agent.
The next in line is another former Patriots cornerback, Stephon Gilmore. As of day two, he was still on the board. Late Monday, the 49ers took themselves out of the running, signing former Chiefs CB Charvaius Ward, seemingly leaving the Raiders and Jets as the only teams mentioned by name to have interest in Gilmore. But as of now, the signs suggest the reason for positivity in terms of the Raiders possibly landing the Pro Bowler Gilmore. If it happened, it would certainly ease some fans’ minds about whether the Raiders can come out of free agency with an upgrade at one of their biggest need positions.
