South Carolina fired men's basketball coach Frank Martin on Monday, and that puts UNC and Duke in an interesting spot with a five-star recruit.
He averaged 22.9 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks for Ridge View this season en route to a state title and statewide player of the year honors. Coach-in-waiting Jon Scheyer’s 2022 and 2023 classes both rank No. 1 in the country. But the team also produced three NBA draft picks last year, including two of the top seven selections in Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga. I told him the final decision is left up to him, but we want to guide him to make sure he gets it right the first time. Most notably, G League Ignite players forfeit their college eligibility and may not receive the same exposure they’d get at, say, a college basketball blue blood. With a Columbia campus just 15 miles from Jackson’s high school, South Carolina leaned heavily on the hometown hero angle. In the 2023 class, UNC has one verbal commit and Duke has two. But it’s not the only option. Greg Jackson also told the newspaper: “At the end of the day, we want him to be happy and be able to live with the choice that’s made. “(G. G.) threw out there that two to three weeks and I don’t know why he said that. And South Carolina’s Monday firing of coach Frank Martin gives UNC and Duke even more short-term opportunity. “We’re still a ways off,” Greg Jackson told The State’s Phil Kornblut last week.

If South Carolina and other SEC schools searching for a basketball coach all offered the same candidates, where would USC fit in pecking order?
Recent Crystal Ball predictions for the top UNC basketball recruiting target in the class of 2023 have shifted. The Tar Heels were.
Still, it can’t be viewed by Auburn, Georgetown, North Carolina, or the NBA G-League as a positive sign, what with the kind of success that Duke has continually had on the recruiting trail over the past decade. But it goes without being said that I wouldn’t be shocked if Jackson ultimately committed to Duke. The Blue Devils have been at or near the top of recruiting boards for the majority of the one-and-done era, even though it’s resulted in just one national title in that time. Granted, both are from Duke insiders, Adam Rowe and John Watson of The Devils Den, which obviously must be taken into consideration.
In the same year that he won SEC Player of the Year, Gamecocks star Sindarius Thornwell took the college basketball world by storm, averaging 25.8 points in ...
The 2017 Final Four run put an end to the tournament drought. Thornwell, No. 43 overall in the 2013 class, was the highest-ranked recruit in South Carolina history up to that point, and the Oak Hill grad stuck by his commitment despite seeing the Gamecocks finish 14-18.Thornwell’s historic commitment was surpassed by Dozier nearly two years later. Save for one Final Four run, however, Martin was never able to truly get the Gamecocks program off the ground and take it to the heights that seemed possible following the 2017 season. After 10 seasons, Martin was fired on Monday, exiting as the third-longest tenured head coach in program history, amassing a 171-157 record and just one NCAA Tournament appearance. The Gamecocks have already started their search for a new head coach, and Gamecock Scoop gave a rundown of some top candidates to track early in the process. In the meantime, we are taking a look back at a handful of the top moments for South Carolina during the Martin Era. Despite all the inconsistencies, average-or-worse finishes and the controversies with player suspensions and the mess of last year’s pandemic season, there are still some highlights to take away. Prior to Martin’s arrival in Columbia, the Gamecocks had finished above .500 just eight times in the 31 years since entering the SEC in 1991. Thornwell and Dozier provided the two-man core for the most success the program had since winning the program’s lone SEC championship in 1996-97.That included the aforementioned Final Four berth and also tying the school record for wins in the previous year with a 25-9 record, one win in the NIT – the program’s first postseason win since capturing back-to-back NIT titles in 2005 and 2006 – and the team’s first ranking in the AP poll in more than a decade. Impossible to start anywhere else. The best postseason run in program history started in Greenville with wins over No. 10 Marquette and an incredible upset over No. 2 Duke before victories over No. 3 Baylor in the Sweet 16 and No. 4 Florida in the Elite Eight. In the same year that he won SEC Player of the Year, Gamecocks star Sindarius Thornwell took the college basketball world by storm, averaging 25.8 points in those four games to earn the East Region’s most outstanding player award.Thornwell, PJ Dozier, Chris Silva and Duane Notice were at the core of a historic season that ended with a 26-11 mark, setting a program record for most wins in a season before a close loss to Gonzaga in the Final Four.
Martin, who is the third longest-tenured coach in program history, compiled a 171-147 record (79-99 in SEC regular-season games) with the Gamecocks — ...
The search now begins immediately, with former players like B. J. McKie and Mike Boynton Jr. being two names that have floated to the top of many speculative lists. South Carolina also appeared in the NIT once under Martin, and had two 20-win seasons. While there’s no question Martin took this program to an incredible height with the Final Four, the lows were far more numerous, and recent seasons showed little reason to hope for much.
South Carolina has officially parted ways with head coach Frank Martin, meaning there's an opening at Mike Boynton's alma mater.
It’s still very early on in SC’s coaching search, but it appears that Oklahoma State has put itself in a great place to avoid schools from trying to poach Mike Boynton early in his new contract. That buyout would be $9.45 million should he leave this year for South Carolina, or any other school that might come calling. Since the news about Martin broke, Boynton’s name has been mentioned several times regarding the opening.

Martin's future with the team was in doubt last spring after a 6-14 season. Martin has been criticized by some for his sideline shouting and fiery, scowling demeanor. Martin leaves with a 171-147 mark at South Carolina, including a 79-99 record in the regular season.
Martin has only led the programme to the NCAA Tournament once in ten years, to the Final Four in 2016-17. He previously coached Kansas State for five seasons, ...
A source confirmed to The Athletic that Frank Martin, the men’s basketball coach at South Carolina, has been sacked. In 2015-16, his fourth season on the job, the Gamecocks finished 25-9 (11-7 SEC) but on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble. This season, South Carolina finished 18-13 overall and 9-9 in the SEC.
