It looks like the Kansas City Chiefs have found their replacement for Tyrann Mathieu. The Chiefs reached a deal to sign former Houston Texans safety Justin ...
The business of the NFL is harsh and the Kansas City Chiefs not offering S Tyrann Mathieu a contract proves it.
As first reported by NFL reporter Kimberley A. Martin and confirmed by The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, the Chiefs didn’t even attempt to offer Tyrann Mathieu a new contract. It doesn’t matter that Mathieu was twice named team MVP or helped drag the Chiefs’ defensive culture from the dregs that Bob Sutton left it in. He never actually got an offer from the team in the first place.
Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best players in the NFL, so the fact he hasn't agreed to a free agent deal yet is a bit perplexing.
Mathieu is too slight to play a majority of his reps in the box as a free safety, and his coverage intelligence is a bit wasted were he to be used as a single-high free safety. Historically, the NFL hasn’t coveted the position. Kyle Hamilton is a unicorn, but he’s far from the only intriguing prospect at the position.
Safety Tyrann Mathieu has had a decent run with the Kansas City Chiefs. It was there that he won Super Bowl LIV and garnered two Pro Bowl.
Meirov tweeted, “The #Chiefs are signing former #Texans safety Justin Reid to a 3-year, $31.5M deal. The #Chiefs are signing former #Texans safety Justin Reid to a 3-year, $31.5M deal. That should signal the end of Tyrann Mathieu.
The Chiefs have reached a three-year agreement with the former Houston Texans safety, almost certainly ensuring that Mathieu will be signing elsewhere.

Former Cowboys DE Marcus Spears has a dream. That dream is that Tyrann Mathieu will magically end up on the Cowboys' 2022 roster.
“I have a dream that Tyrann Mathieu signs with the Dallas Cowboys. I need Tyrann Mathieu to be the safety for the Dallas Cowboys. We have been starving for a safety back there. He tells Spears that the problem is that the “Honey Badger” wants to go play for a winning team. As a regular face on ESPN’s NFL Live, Spears gets to talk about the Cowboys and what is going on with the team. It would be a dream to watch him play with Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs. But the safety’s projected market value is a massive $14.8 million per year, a number the Cowboys just can’t afford. The team never seems to spend big on the secondary and with a budgetarily strict year like this one, it’s likely not going to start now. The analyst said he wishes more than anything that Chiefs Tyrann Mathieu could be a safety for the Cowboys. Trust us, Marcus. We all wish this.
Agreeing to a deal with Justin Reid signaled the end of the Mathieu era in Kansas City. It's part of GM Brett Veach's formula to sign younger players.
Veach's philosophy extends to those he's signed as well as to the in-house players he's signed to contract extensions. The Chiefs will often move on without some of their stars, even those who desperately would like to keep playing in Kansas City. The Chiefs throw their significant free-agent money at younger players theoretically on the rise and not older players who have already been at the top. This is a modal window. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tyrann Mathieu practically pleaded over the past few months to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs once his contract expired this year. This is a modal window.
A new report says the Kansas City Chiefs never once offered a new contract to Tyrann Mathieu beyond the 2021 season.
What’s done is done and the Chiefs have turned the page to a new era on defense with the signing of Reid. Chiefs Kingdom would do well to welcome him as they did Mathieu before him. And the timing of Reid’s deal insinuates the Chiefs have known about that plan for quite some time. It’s been complete radio silence on any real movement or attempts to check on a potential deal up until free agency tampering began, and then the Chiefs made the biggest statement of all. However, the Chiefs and Mathieu didn’t even offer that up. All we’re left with is conjecture at this point, which means it’s also possible that the Chiefs were smiling for the cameras all along. Perhaps it was clear that Mathieiu wanted to reach a certain financial threshold and the Chiefs just were not going to get there.
Tyrann Mathieu's time with the Kansas City Chiefs is apparently coming to an end. ESPN's.
He is a three-time All-Pro selection and three-time Pro Bowler who helped Kansas City win the Super Bowl during the 2019 season. The former was also a solid playmaker on the back end of Houston's defense and finished the 2021 season with 66 tackles, four passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble. It appears as if Reid is that different direction.
The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Houston Texans star safety Justin Reid to a multiyear contract, signaling the end of Tyrann Mathieu's time in ...
With the pending addition of Reid, the Chiefs are expected to move on from All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu, who became an unrestricted free agent this off-season. League sources told ESPN, NFL Media and Pro Football Network on Monday night that Reid agreed to a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the Chiefs that includes $20 million guaranteed. In 57 career games, he has compiled 315 total tackles, seven interceptions, 23 pass breakups, two sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
The Chiefs worked out a deal to bring in Texans safety Justin Reid on a three-year contract, signaling the end of Tyrann Mathieu in Kansas City.
Reid has shown plenty of potential but he’s not the player Mathieu was at 25. Mathieu was undeniably one of the major forces on the Chiefs’ defense during their Super Bowl run and in the last two seasons. On the other hand, Reid is five years younger than Mathieu, who will turn 30 in May. He’s also cheaper.
A quick look at every free-agent deal for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2022 NFL offseason.
What it means: The Chiefs will be moving on from veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu. Reid is 25, or far younger than Mathieu, who will be 30 in May, and the Chiefs felt more comfortable sinking their money into a more youthful player. Career highlights: Brown is a three-time Pro Bowler, twice in his first three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and then last season with the Chiefs. Last year, Brown requested a trade to a team that would play him at left tackle, his preferred position. Why he was tagged: The Chiefs weren't going to relinquish last year's first-round draft pick in return for a one-year player. Burton won't have much of an offensive role but will again be a regular on special teams. But the season ended there and now the Chiefs are left to reload around quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
