The Steelers have a new quarterback. Pittsburgh has reached an agreement on a two-year deal with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, Mike Garafolo reports.
Of course, signing Trubisky to a two-year contract does nothing to stop the Steelers from drafting a rookie high, perhaps someone like Malik Willis who might need time to develop. After flashing potential early in his career, Trubisky struggled mightily with his accuracy downfield and never developed as a pocket passer. That mobility and bootleg ability should help open up the offense in 2022.
The former Bears quarterback will head to Pittsburgh now that Ben Roethlisberger is retired.
In four years with the Bears, Trubisky compiled a 29-21 record, threw for 10,609 yards, 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. Per Tom Pelissero, Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the Steelers, that starts at $14.25 million, but can escalate up to $27 million with various incentives. The Steelers need to find a new starting quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

None of those quarterbacks has a better resume than Trubisky, who won 29 of 50 games with the Bears and started two playoff gamess.A former No. 2 pick in 2017, Trubisky was disappointing enough with the Bears, though, that they declined his fifth-year option. That number decreased by two in recent days, though, with Tom Brady coming out of retirement to rejoin the Buccaneers and Deshaun Watson’s legal situation trending toward him playing somewhere — but not with the Texans — in 2022.After a year of anonymity, Trubisky will have a chance to rehab his reputation: one that was more affected by the quarterbacks taken after him in the draft: Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ all-world quarterback, and Watson. He’ll have a chance to be an immediate upgrade over Roethlisberger, who averaged only 6.3 passing yards per attempt in 2020 and 6.2 last year. So now, in Year 6, he will get another shot — with the Steelers, who had had the same starting quarterback since 2004, Roethlisberger’s rookie season.Trubisky obviously has big shoes to fill in Pittsburgh, since Roethlisberger is a future Hall of Famer. The Steelers and outgoing GM Kevin Colbert opted to sign Trubisky instead of pulling off a trade with the 49ers for Jimmy Garoppolo. Signing Trubisky is lower-commitment move, since the Steelers — who are usually risk-averse — won’t have to surrender draft assets.Considering the opportunity available for Trubisky, Pittsburgh is certainly a more desirable landing spot than the Giants, even if he thought he could beat out Jones in 2022.From the Giants’ perspective, at least, signing Trubisky — to something like a one-year, $10 million contract — would have made a lot of sense. NFL free agency 2022: Mitch Trubisky signs with Steelers instead of joining Giants as Daniel Jones’ backupQuarterback Mitch Trubisky won’t be reuniting with the Giants’ Brian Daboll. Less than an hour later, news broke of Trubisky joining the Steelers. Free agency signings can officially happen beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday.Trubisky obviously has a much better chance of being the Steelers’ Week 1 starter than he does of occupying that job in East Rutherford, even though Daniel Jones is flawed. So the Giants still need to find a backup (or even potential challenger) for Jones, who is preparing for his critical fourth season. General Manager Kevin Colbert said in February that Rudolph would be the starter if the season were starting, but Trubisky’s arrival represents a big change. Former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky will sign a 2-year deal with the Steelers, per a report from Mike Garafolo.
He’s 0-2 all-time in playoff games as well and signed a free agent one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills to sit behind Josh Allen last season. He appeared in six games, threw eight passes and completed six of them for 43 yards and an interception. When Trubisky was drafted by the Bears second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, it seemed like a massive reach.
Trubisky might not be the Steelers' next great quarterback, but he could serve a valuable role for a team looking to stay competitive.
Signing Trubisky doesn’t make the Steelers a Super Bowl contender, but it doesn’t take them out of the race, either. “Mason is 5-4-1 as an NFL starter, albeit in a backup kind of role, but we're excited to see what is next for Mason,” Colbert said in February. “Dwayne Haskins came in and did some nice things throughout the season as a scout team quarterback. But Trubisky has experience working with Buffalo’s staff and learning behind Josh Allen for a season. He played some in a preseason, and we're excited to see what Dwayne can provide either from competition or maybe he evolves as a starter. He alleviates the pressure to draft a first-round quarterback from a below-average class, and he gives the Steelers meaningful competition at the position. In acquiring Trubisky, a former No. 2 overall pick, the Steelers stayed true to most of their core tenets. He also had the second-highest off-target percentage at 19.4% over that span. From 2017 to '20, Trubisky’s 833 rushing yards on scrambles were the fifth most among all quarterbacks. Is Trubisky the next great Steelers quarterback? The Steelers also aren’t known for pursuing outside quarterbacks as potential starters. This is a modal window. This is a modal window.

Trubisky started 12 games as a rookie with the Bears and served as their full-time starter for three seasons before he fell out of favor in 2020, when he only started 10 times. He was always being compared to them and just, you know, was never gonna be able to live up to some of the things [Patrick] Mahomes and [Deshaun] Watson and some of those guys did.” The Steelers signed Rudolph to a two-year, $6,233,066 contract before the start of last season. He is not expected to be traded or ask for a trade, the source said. According to a source, Rudolph was aware the Steelers were likely to sign a quarterback in free agency with whom he would compete for the starting position. Meantime, the Steelers tried to bolster their offensive line by signing center/guard Mason Cole to a three-year, $15.75 million contract.
Trubisky agreed to a contract Monday in NFL free agency with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is expected to be their starting quarterback.

With that said, the Steelers were also reported to be targeting the former Tar Heel last month. Given the relationship that developed between the 27-year-old and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, many expected the Giants to be his destination with the latter being hired as the new head coach. The former second overall pick spent last season with the Bills, serving as Josh Allen‘s backup.
The Steelers didn't waste any time once the NFL's legal tampering period opened Monday afternoon, quickly agreeing to terms with quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
the Steelers make the playoffs in 2022 -- the team still has him under contract for 2023. Trubisky, the second-overall pick in the 2017 draft behind Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, brings more experience to the table than Rudolph, a third-round pick in 2018. Trubisky, 27, agreed to a two-year deal with the Steelers worth $14 million, though it includes incentives. Next year's draft class is considered deeper. He has a career completion percentage of 64.1 percent. If he proves to be the long-term answer at quarterback -- ie.
MAQB: Why the Steelers Selected Mitchell Trubisky as Big Ben's Successor ... Pittsburgh is giving the former No. 2 overall pick a second shot to succeed as an NFL ...
Eventually, he found his way back to the edge, where he played in college, broke out there in 2020, his final year in Arizona, and then backed up that up with another big year last fall playing for his college coach in Carolina. So for a similar rate, Cleveland’s getting a guy who’s been more productive, even if he is two years older, and with the flexibility to move on whenever they want to. Two, because of the Jaguars’ history, they have had to pay a bit of a tax on free agents. But maybe not as drastic of one as it might seem on the surface—teams are indeed looking for speedy slots like Kirk. And if you dig around a little, you’ll find too that Kirk’s position coach has told people that he was the team’s best, most consistent receiver last year. Bottom line, the part of the deal that matters most to a player, the front end, is loaded. • Christian Kirk’s big contract in Jacksonville raised plenty of eyebrows across the league, and the money there is real (though not quite at the $21 million-per-year level). He gets $20 million to sign, a $1.5 million base this year, and a $16.5 million base next year, plus $500,000 workout and per-game roster bonuses in each year. • The Browns’ decision to trade for Amari Cooper does take on new context now with Kirk getting what he did. • Just as the trade for Carson Wentz won’t dissuade the Commanders from drafting a quarterback in the first round if the right one’s there, I certainly wouldn’t expect the presence of Trubisky to kill all interest the Steelers have in quarterbacks early in the draft. So it’ll be on Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada to take advantage of Trubisky’s athleticism, and get him throwing on the move and off of play-action. His new coordinator (Renaldo Hill) and position coach (Derrick Ansley) have known him for that long, too, having recruited him out of high school. That said, he’s not who he was evaluated to be coming out of North Carolina—he needs a staff willing to work around some of his limitations. Plenty of ex-first-round QBs have gotten second chances in new locales, and there have been high hopes for them.
In this file photo, Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky throws a pass during a game against the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 20, 2020.
A “bridge QB.” I thought that’s what Rudolph was supposed to be when they gave him another year on his deal for 2022. Currently, only five players on the Steelers roster have a cap hit higher than $7 million in 2022. Mainly because I don’t see the need for it. But because Trubisky can at least run a little and escape the horrid offensive line pass blocking, Canada’s true genius will shine through? And for as little as Pittsburgh seems to think of Mayfield, I still wouldn’t place him behind those two Steelers options. So, I’ll agree with the masses that Trubisky is a little bit better. I’ve got nothing against Trubisky. I just don’t like the move. Once pen goes to paper and you get a hypocycloid stamp of approval, the roads are paved with adoring Black and Gold fans wherever you may roam. What were you thinking with Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins manning the ship in Pittsburgh this fall? Why not take whatever money is being spent on Trubisky and spend it elsewhere? Fine. So, what does that translate to in terms of win total for 2022? Trubisky has thrown only eight passes since then, and the Steelers did exactly that.
