According to Baseball America, the A's netted Atlanta's No. 2 (Langeliers), No. 3 (Pache), No. 9 (Cusick), and No. 14 (Estes) prospects. He has one of the strongest arms in the minors, and he's good enough at the other aspects of defense to profile as an above-average mitt. The Olson trade creates a path for Freeman to sign with his hometown team. Letting a franchise icon leave is never easy, but from a cold-blooded business perspective, the Braves replaced Freeman with a comparable player who is several years younger and cheaper. Righty Chris Bassitt was traded to the Mets over the weekend and it's likely third baseman Matt Chapman and starters Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas will be on the move next. Freddie Freeman's time with the Atlanta Braves may be over.
The Atlanta Braves are reportedly in agreement to trade for first baseman Matt Olson, according to a report from ESPN.
The Atlanta Braves essentially bowed out of the race when they swung a blockbuster trade with the Oakland A's to acquire Matt Olson. The Los Angeles Dodgers, ...
We’re all eagerly awaiting the arrival of the promising prospect and it would be tough to part with him. Freeman would be an excellent addition to the lineup but we shouldn’t get our hopes up. If the Red Sox sign Freeman, it may signal that they are willing to take their time developing Casas. As impressive as he was last season in the minor leagues and the Olympics, Casas only spent nine games at the Triple-A level. The question is whether or not Freeman is the right choice to spend up for. Boston has some room in their budget and they might even be willing to cross the tax threshold this year after staying under the last two seasons. According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox have joined the Freddie Freeman sweepstakes.
The Boston Red Sox have been pretty quiet since the MLB lockout ended, but that could be set to change as they hone in on Freddie Freeman.
This is a doable deal, and it’s encouraging to see the Boston Red Sox emerge as a potential landing spot for Freeman from seemingly out of nowhere. Freeman has been a top ten hitter in the league over the past few years, and adding him to an already dangerous lineup may just allow Alex Cora to hide Bradley at the bottom of the lineup and get by unscathed. Freeman would come in and take over for Bobby Dalbec, who had a strong second half of the season in 2021, but was way too inconsistent overall to be counted on in 2022. Freeman is easily one of the top first baseman in the league, and during his time with Atlanta, he only got better as he got older. With an already solid core of Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, and J.D. Martinez in place, adding Freeman would make this arguably one of the most dangerous lineups on the league. While both those teams are still in the running, teams like the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays appear to have joined the sweepstakes as well.
Free-agent first baseman Freddie Freeman was the 2020 National League MVP and led the Atlanta Braves to a World Series title in 2021.
UPDATE (1:57 p.m.): MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports “While Dodgers on the surface seem a very attractive option, hearing not to assume they are favored. Freeman, a five-time All-Star, was the 2020 National League MVP. They’ve won the day before under similar circumstances (CC Sabathia). They remain in as do others.” The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports Tuesday that “Yes, the Rays are serious about signing free-agent first baseman Freddie Freeman, major-league sources say. Please consider supporting us with a subscription. Teams known to be in now: the Dodgers plus 4 from AL East: Yankees, Rays and Jays, too.”
Still, several high level free agents are out there, including 2020 National League MVP Freddie Freeman. Freeman, 32, has spent his entire career in Atlanta, a ...
Now coming of a championship season in which he hit .300 with 31 home runs, the first baseman could potentially be a huge signing. Battling injuries, it would be the Hall of Famer’s final NBA season. Bird added 12 assists and 14 rebounds to complete the triple-double (also collecting four steals). For Bird, 35, it was the final time he would reach either the 40-point or triple-double plateau. New England leads 3-0 after the first game. Tomorrow, the Bruins will be back in action in Minnesota against the Wild at 7:30 p.m. And the Celtics will face the Warriors at 10 p.m.
The Braves traded for Matt Olson instead of re-signing Freddie Freeman. Here's why they're going to miss their franchise icon.
Game 4: The Braves trail 2–0 in the sixth when Houston brings in Raley with Rosario and Freeman due to hit as the second and third batters. Much of the fight in the last CBA talks was caused by what analytics have done to the game and player value. Game 1: With a runner at third and less than two outs, the Astros bring in lefty Brooks Raley. Freeman foils the strategy with one pitch. The Braves may be closing the door on what was a franchise player. Freeman should have been the successor to Chipper Jones as a Brave who never wore another uniform. Game 3: In the third inning of a scoreless game, Freeman takes a down-and-in fastball from Luis Garcia and shoots it to left-center for a single. But here is when they will miss Freeman: when there is a runner at second or third base and Freeman isn’t there to get him in. Maybe there is a grand plan to keep Olson and Freeman, but no such signs have been evident from the Braves. Last year Freeman told friends that if the Braves dawdled with contract offers, he was prepared to return to his roots in Southern California. Atlanta whiffed on the chance to lock up Freeman during the season and after the 2021 World Series title. Olson is a little bit worse in the big spots than overall. In rebuild mode, Oakland did well to focus on middle-of-the-field young talent, but the cost was not especially high for Atlanta to get Olson. Outfielder Cristian Pache is a wonderful Gold Glove caliber center fielder who may or may not hit. Freeman soon will become the seventh first basemen to sign for an average annual value of $23 million or more. It makes sense only when aging curves guide teams more than the halo effect of signing, developing and keeping a franchise player.

Freeman, who has only ever played for the Braves, is now looking at free agency. His departure all but became official when the Braves acquired first baseman Matt Olson from the Oakland Athletics on Monday in exchange for four prospects: outfielder Cristian Pache, catcher Shea Langeliers, and right-handers Ryan Cusick and Joey Estes. He is a five-time All-Star, a Gold Glove Award winner, a World Series champion and a National League MVP.

The Jays are still in need of a quality infielder and could use additional bullpen help. Toronto has been linked to Freeman—whose parents were both born in Ontario—since before the lockout began in December, though it’s been clear from the start the Blue Jays aren’t considered front-runners. The Yankees and Dodgers are considered the favorites to sign Freeman, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, but the Rays and Blue Jays “have remained aggressive” in pursuit of the 2020 NL MVP.

The move is all but certain to end Freddie Freeman's time in Atlanta. The Dodgers have pursued Freeman in recent days and there's now a clear path for Freeman to join his hometown team. Kiermaier, 31, pops up in trade rumors every offseason, and he is now entering the final guarantee year of his contract. Phillies re-signed Odúbel Herrera over the weekend, but they still need another outfielder, preferably one capable of playing center field. Oakland signaled its intention to sell when they traded away Chris Bassitt over the weekend, and Olson is arguably their top trade chip as an excellent two-way first baseman with two years to go until free agency. They are poised to pivot and reallocate those dollars elsewhere. The Twins are discussing starting pitcher trades with the Athletics, reports MLB.com's Jon Morosi. Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas are the most likely candidates to go to Minnesota now that Chris Bassitt and Matt Olson have been traded. It's unclear if the Blue Jays would continue to chase after Freeman if they landed Schwarber, or vice versa. He also took up a new position late in the season, picking up first base. It's hard to see the Rays winning a free-agent bidding war for Freeman, who grew up rooting for the Dodgers in Southern California and has ties to Ontario (both his parents are from Canada and he holds dual citizenship). The Yankees, of course, could match or exceed any contract offer. With Matt Olson going to the Braves, Freeman's days in Atlanta appear over.
Matt Olson's arrival in Atlanta is a bittersweet reality for the Braves clubhouse -- one that likely means saying goodbye to a beloved teammate.
At first base was not No. 5, Freeman's old number, but No. 69 -- John Nogowski, a 29-year-old left-handed slugger with 147 plate appearances and one homer in the big leagues, as well as an on-field scrap with Marcus Stroman. Olson will arrive later this week to take grounders and throws at first base. This is supposed to be a time of celebration for the Braves. They have been sized for the championship rings they will receive next month, albeit with an unusual process because club employees were banned from speaking to players during the lockout: The players sent in their measurements, "and if you had any questions, you couldn't call anyone," Anderson recalled, chuckling. On their way to the World Series title last year, the Braves felt their clubhouse culture was a valuable asset, as they survived the season-ending injury to Ronald Acuna Jr. and integrated a lot of newcomers in trades. His former teammates are well aware that Freeman was prepared to finish his career with the Braves, and that the negotiations between the team and the first baseman stalled last spring. It's not the first time this happened with the face of a franchise. "A guy who should have his number retired as an Atlanta Brave. That part is disappointing ... and at the same time, there's the friendship component." When Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos spoke to reporters a few hours later, he fought back tears under the weight of questions related to Freeman's departure. Ian Anderson was in a hot tub when Max Fried saw a notification about the trade and told others in the room. Snitker was standing in front of reporters when he was informed of the news, and, while Snitker had known it was a possibility, he blanched at the update. In all of those cases, the rest of the players had to move on, as well. The next time Freddie Freeman -- a lifelong Brave, the team's starting first baseman for the past 11 years -- dons an Atlanta uniform will likely be after he retires. NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Not long before Braves manager Brian Snitker hosted the first team meeting of spring training Monday morning, he texted Freddie Freeman, who was on the other side of the country.
Toronto Blue Jays star Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hinted that the Jays are about to swipe Freddie Freeman from the Yankees, confirming Carlos Baerga's report (??).
The Yankees aren’t quite so creative, and seem to feel they have enough talent already. Freeman can now play the disrespect card all he wants on the open market after the Braves flagrantly flashed their need to get younger and cheaper in his face. Well … don’t tell that to those teams!
First baseman Freddie Freeman remained unsigned Monday but the Atlanta Braves appear to be moving forward as defending World Series champions without him.
The Atlanta Braves aren't waiting for franchise icon Freddie Freeman to make a decision in free agency. The defending World Series champs are swinging a ...

As the Dodgers gathered on the field for the start of camp, the status of free-agent first baseman Freddie Freeman took center stage.
“I felt like everything came out as good as it can for the first time,” said Kershaw, who is hopeful of being ready for opening day. Relievers Caleb Ferguson and Tommy Kahnle are unlikely to be ready for opening day, Roberts said, as they try to come back from Tommy John surgery. The left-hander, who had to rehabilitate an elbow injury over the winter, faced four batters and threw 15 pitches before retreating to the bullpen for another inning’s worth of throws. Echoed Turner, a former division rival of Freeman’s while with the Washington Nationals: “I’ve played against Freddie for a long time now and he’s unbelievable. Suddenly, the Dodgers’ chances of signing Freeman, the first baseman and former most valuable player from Orange El Modena High, seemed to skyrocket. Just past 11 a.m., Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes walked out of the team’s offices to watch pitchers throw bullpen sessions.

An MVP, a perennial All-Star and one of the most likable guys in the game. While we’ve heard the Yankees and Dodgers all offseason as really the only two teams interested in Freeman, it was definitely a little shocking to see a team like the Cubs as a possible suitor. It’s absolutely crazy to think of a day where Freeman is not a Brave but that day is coming, and his market is ramping up.

Rizzo posted a 113 wRC+ for the Yankees in 200 plate appearances after coming over from the Cubs at the trade deadline.
As such, a reunion with free agent Anthony Rizzo is suggested to be “the most realistic” first base addition for the Yankees. Three days ago, Heyman wrote that the Dodgers and Braves are the most likely landing spots for Freeman, who reportedly has sought a six-year deal. Other clubs known to be in the mix for Olson include the Guardians, Rangers, Padres, and naturally the Braves if they lose Freeman.

Are the Los Angeles Dodgers about to sign Freddie Freeman? His wife Chelsea's Instagram is supposed to make you think that for sure!
In terms of the actual Freeman bidding war, the first baseman will certainly not be available for 30% off. Could the first baseman actually be falling behind in terms of making waves? But over the weekend — beginning Friday — things flipped.
NORTH PORT, Fla. — The Atlanta Braves begin spring training workouts Monday but at least one familiar face isn't in Florida yet.
“I hadn’t talked to him since we left the parade,” Snitker said. “I was just asking how family was. Braves fans have been anxiously awaiting for MVP and All-Star Freddie Freeman to decide if he is re-signing with the team.
The Atlanta Braves gave up on re-signing first baseman Freddie Freeman on Monday by trading with the Oakland A's for Matt Olson.
The GM probably was filled with emotion because Olson and Freeman reportedly have been the Yankees’ biggest targets in their hope of upgrading at first base before Opening Day. The Oakland Athletics gave up their star first baseman for a package of youngsters: outfielder Cristian Pache, catcher Shea Langeliers, and right-handers Joey Estes and Ryan Cusick.
The Braves have a new first baseman in Matt Olson, and he's just as dangerous a hitter as the player he's replacing.
Freeman may no longer be in the NL East, but the Braves look as dangerous as ever with Olson replacing him at first. Olson is MLB’s best defensive first basemen; his 27 Defensive Runs Saved since 2018 are easily the most at the position over that span. Atlanta is coming off its first World Series title since 1995, a championship run that saw Freeman hit .304 with a 1.045 OPS and five home runs in 16 postseason games.
From the moment the Atlanta Braves won their first World Series title since 1995, the focus shifted to re-signing first baseman Freddie Freeman.
It makes it look like the Braves made the decision for Freeman instead of Freeman leaving on his own. He was the face of the franchise, and many around baseball expected him to stay in Atlanta. Freeman had reportedly received offers from the Dodgers and Yankees, and with this trade, it signals that the Braves didn’t think they were going to compete with the offers Freeman had out there.

The Red Sox are a late entrant into the bidding for free-agent slugger Freddie Freeman. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.
But there’s a clear on-paper fit and the long-term payroll flexibility to make it work, as MLBTR’s Anthony Franco noted when picking the Sox to sign Freeman back in November. Wherever Freeman lands, it’s become quite clear that he’s set to move on from the only organization he’s ever known. Freeman is the type of player for whom many clubs might consider an exception, but it’s not yet clear whether Boston would feel that way or whether any Freeman interest is contingent on moving other salary. Last week’s newly ratified collective bargaining agreement bumped the tier-one threshold for penalization from $210MM to $230MM, but the Sox are already at about $209MM of luxury obligations (via Roster Resource’s Jason Martinez). Adding Freeman to the mix would send Boston soaring past that mark. The Freddie Freeman bidding has a new entrant, as MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Red Sox have joined the fray. A Freeman signing would give the BoSox an elite heart-of-the-order grouping, as he’d join Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez in composing the team’s two-through-five hitters.
Just when you thought the Atlanta Braves had botched all they could with Freddie Freeman, the last note of the song was perhaps the most sour of all.
It’s also been a dance where the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and other teams have tried to cut in, hoping Freeman will leave with one of them at the end of the night. It’s clear that the Braves have moved on from Freeman (despite there being some emotion on the face of general manager Alex Anthopoulos when discussing the Olson deal), and there’s nothing wrong with that. Nope, just a notification that the Atlanta Braves were moving on from Freddie Freeman by trading with the Oakland A’s for Matt Olson.
The Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Cubs last season leading up to the trade deadline, and in 49 games for them he posted an OPS+ of 110 with eight home runs.

The Red Sox have reportedly joined the Yankees, Blue Jays and others among the teams interested in signing Braves free agent first baseman Freddie Freeman.
Freeman made his MLB debut in 2010 and he's played for the Braves his entire career. He batted .311 with five homers and 11 RBI in the postseason and helped Atlanta win its first World Series title since 1995. But if the Red Sox could get him on a shorter term, big-money contract, that would be great for Boston.
The New York Yankees are shopping for a first baseman and may re-sign Anthony Rizzo if they can't land former Atlanta Braves star Freddie Freeman.
