Players Championship leader Anirban Lahiri has been struggling. But he sees beauty in that struggle and in the possibility of a new week.
“I’ll invite you to come and play the courses I played growing up,” he said. Lahiri himself admitted early in the week that he wanted to rediscover the joy of competitive, but that joy is contingent upon performing well. He was happy to be playing so well on a week where his countrymen could watch him. He finished T5 at the 2015 PGA. He’s logged two wins on the DP World Tour, a handful more on the Asian Tour and played worldwide for more than a decade. How does he try to cling to a one-shot lead against the deepest field in golf? How does he hold off each of the 29 competitors within five shots of the lead? After opening with five-under 67 on Thursday, Lahiri played the bulk of his second and third rounds in a Sunday marathon. The good news is that Lahiri finished Sunday at TPC Sawgrass with a one-shot lead. “I’m just happy that I’m playing well. You’re one week away from being at Augusta. You’re one week away from having a two, three year exemption. Still, Lahiri is in the driver’s seat through 11 holes in his third round. Lahiri, a 34-year-old Indian journeyman, was clear-eyed about his form entering the week.
Anirban Lahiri has full status on the PGA Tour but has had a difficult season so far.
You sometimes start pushing against a wall, and you go backwards." You just have to try to clean up the areas that are kind of making the scorecards dirty, so to speak. You just have to keep working at the quality of your golf. You have to keep working to improve your confidence. The one thing that's really important is to see myself hit more quality shots in competition. "You have to start somewhere. "So really the road map boils down to what can I do to play better? "So you just have to try to go back to the drawing board. What can I do to change the kind of scores I'm shooting. To trend in the right direction and to kind of reverse the flow of things and then to let things happen. And I had a lot of that happen to me. You're one week away from you having a different kind of conversation with me.

“The course is in fantastic shape for all it’s been through in the last five days,” said Kevin Kisner, who shot 68 to move to 6 under. Maybe if I get a few putts going early and maybe it starts blowing in the afternoon and gets a little shaky, then maybe (I can contend), but got a lot of work to do.” Said Streelman: “Clearly it’s soft right now, which allows the fairways to get a little wider. “If I would have made the putt on 9 (on his last hole), as well, to get to 5, I would have felt a lot better,” he said. Kevin Streelman made six birdies in his last 11 holes over two days to get back into the tournament at 6 under with a 66. “I got off to a really good start yesterday, kept the momentum going, and came back out this morning,” he said.

"But every single PGA Tour event is ... the level of golf is unbelievable. "I know you guys [in the media] would say it's not a star-studded leaderboard, it's not the usual suspects," Casey said. Australian Cameron Smith (69), a Ponte Vedra Beach resident and Tom Hoge (72) are tied at 7-under.
Anirban Lahiri is the 54-hole leader at the Players Championship, but he's got a group of hungry players chasing him at TPC Sawgrass.

The final group is expected to tee off around 1 p.m. The plan is to have enough daylight to finish 72 holes and allow time for a three-hole aggregate playoff, if necessary.
