But the fact that his name belongs next to theirs when considering Hurt at his best just tells you how rare the air was when he was sailing through it. The last thirty years of his hit and miss career should not overshadow that fact. While Hurt did pepper the last thirty years of his resume with art-house successes (Smoke, Jane Eyre, One True Thing, Into The Wild), cashed some high grade paychecks for Marvel, and dropped in for small parts in some other notable films (even scoring a fourth Oscar nomination in the category of supporting actor for David Cronenberg’s masterful A History of Violence), he never came close to recapturing the heat that radiated with his every step from 1980 to 1991. In some ways, it’s almost as if he stuck around so long and kept so busy (he has just over 100 credits to his name) with projects that didn’t meet his mettle that we simply forgot just how great he was. Even in his second tier films during that period (Eyewitness, Gorky Park, Woody Allen’s Alice), he was so eminently watchable that not only could you not take your eyes off of him, you could forgive the more pedestrian aspects of those films. He could exude warmth and tenderness (Children of a Lesser God, Kiss of the Spider Woman), play brilliant men (The Doctor, The Accidental Tourist), and also characters who aren’t as smart as they think they are (Body Heat), or, in the case of Broadcast News, a man who knew he wasn’t all that bright, but was just intelligent enough to know how to get ahead on looks and confidence – in short, he could do anything.

He was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in “Children of a Lesser God” and “Broadcast News.” Hurt won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1985 for his role as Luis Alberto Molina in “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” according to IMDB. (WGHP) — William Hurt, an Oscar-winning actor famous for his roles in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” as well as “Avengers: Infinity War” and other Marvel Cinematic Universe films, has died at the age of 71.
A four-time Oscar nominee, the actor played charming, explosive leading men in 1980s classics like “Children of a Lesser God” and “Broadcast News.”
Hurt would continue working, on film, screen and stage, until his death, but he would rarely find a role as suited to his unique gifts as this one. He plays the role with grace and sensitivity, particularly a heart-wrenching scene in which he unexpectedly stumbles across a photo of his dearly departed; it’s one of the single finest moments of his acting ever captured on film. Hurt was such an intense personality and played hyper-serious characters with such skill that it was easy to underestimate his gifts as a comic actor. Such a role would be a tricky sell for most actors, but Hurt made it something of a specialty, and he excels here at not only making the character empathetic, but showing how the right person (Geena Davis, in an Oscar-winning turn) could break down those walls. But as Tom Grunick, the up-and-coming network news reporter who’s already being groomed for the anchor seat, Hurt had to both personify all that its idealistic protagonist (Holly Hunter) thought was dangerous, and be charming enough for her to believably fall for him anyway. Kasdan reunited with Hurt for his next directorial effort, an ensemble drama so culturally ubiquitous, its title became generational shorthand.
In a long-running career, Hurt was nominated for an Academy Award three times, winning for 1985's Kiss of the Spider Woman.

William Hurt, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in "Broadcast News" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman," has died. He was 71.
Hurt followed that with another lead role in “Gorky Park” and was part of the ensemble of “The Big Chill,” a drama about a group of friends reuniting that became a touchstone for the baby boomer generation. He earned raves for his work in “The Doctor” as an arrogant surgeon who undergoes a change-of-heart after experiencing health struggles, but other films such as “Second Chances” and “Until the End of the World” failed to generate much attention. The commercial and critical success of those films rocketed Hurt to the A-list, but he didn’t seem to relish the celebrity. But a year later, Hurt achieved a new level of prominence, appearing opposite Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat,” a steamy noir that updated the kind of treachery and double-crossing seen in the likes of “The Big Sleep” and “Double Indemnity” with a bracing sexuality. Hurt later transitioned into character roles in the 1990s and successfully alternated between big screen projects and television, scoring Emmy nominations for his work as a whistleblower in “Damages” and his portrayal of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in “Too Big to Fail.” That was all a lead up to one of the most stunning periods of dominance ever enjoyed by a movie star.

In 2014, Hurt was on the scene of one of the worst on-set accidents in recent history. Miller got two years in jail and eight years probation. He went on to attend Tufts University, where he studied theology. Hurt was on the trestle but escaped unharmed. “It was simply impossible to imagine anything like that could happen. Hurt often worked with top-tier directors.

Said his family in a statement: “The world knew him as an incredible artistic force, a vessel for his many characters, a shapeshifter with an unbending willingness to seek out truth in story, a hunger to peel back what has been forgotten in our humanity, and a passion for the ways that art can validate our living experiences. “I never explain my movies — it just ruins the emotion,” he told the Post. “I love saying that line. Of course, I did and do apologize for any pain I caused.” “That almost bland exterior in the opening scenes is what sets up the later emotional explosions, especially in movies like Altered States and Body Heat. “When Hurt goes over the top, he appears to have started from a quieter place, and so he seems to have traveled a greater distance than a Mickey Rourke or a Robert De Niro. Only Jack Nicholson is his equal at seeming utterly ordinary.” Only a little bit of the iceberg is ever seen, but it is massive. Winning the Academy Award was “very isolating,” Hurt told the Los Angeles Times in 1994. (The drama took years to get into theaters, and Burt Lancaster was originally set to portray Luis.) How am I going to walk into a room and have any other actor trust me?'” Hurt was married to Mary Beth Hurt from 1971 until their 1982 divorce. His portrayal as a gay prisoner in South America in the 1985 movie "Kiss of the Spider Woman" earned him as Oscar as well as a BAFTA Film Award for best actor. Hurt played a variety of roles in classic 1980s films including "Body Heat," "Children of a Lesser God," "Broadcast News" and "The Big Chill." His most recent roles on screen included General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel films "The Incredible Hulk," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War," "Avengers: Endgame" and "Black Widow."
In a long-running career, Hurt was nominated for an Academy Award three times, winning for 1985's Kiss of the Spider Woman.
He acted in numerous beloved and high-profile films, from Broadcast News to Tuck Everlasting. He played cerebral, conflicted patriarchs in Into the Wild and The Village, and made something of a late-career specialty in portraying professors, in movies such as A.I. Artifical Intelligence, Engdame and Marvel blockbusters such as The Incredible Hulk, where he found a new, younger audience as a military scientist who is the hero's nemesis. Playing a queer character imprisoned in Brazil along with a political activist, Hurt said in 2010 he made a point of thinking of his character as transgender, rather than gay. Later, Hurt would also be accused of physical abuse in a palimony lawsuit brought by dancer Sandra Jennings, the mother of one of his childre. "She was such a brilliant woman that she managed to work herself up from below the bottom rung of the Time Inc. ladder," Hurt said of his mother. On screen, Hurt could be genial or chilling, and sometimes both in the same film. Following a cosmopolitan childhood spent all over the world, Hurt attended a private boarding school in Massachusetts. His parents divorced and his mother remarried. Hurt studied theology at Tufts University before transferring to Julliard and making a name for himself in the New York theater scene. "He really is a woman. Hurt burst into movies seemingly as a fully formed leading man, and he came by his chiseled patrician demeanor honestly. He was twice divorced, from Mary Beth Hurt and from Heidi Henderson. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes." He was born in Washington, D.C., to a father who worked in the U.S. diplomatic corps and a mother who'd become an executive of sorts for Time Inc. His parents, Hurt told WHYY's Fresh Air, met in China.
