In four seasons with Cousins at the helm, the Vikings have one playoff win and missed the postseason the past two years. "High-level quarterback play is a prerequisite to building a championship team, and we are confident Kirk will continue along that path." They opted for the former, giving Cousins a raise to $40 million this year, with $55 million payable by next March, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Cousins has put up great numbers since joining the Vikings, having thrown for over 4,200 yards in all but one of his four seasons and throwing 124 touchdowns to 36 interceptions in that span. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to play for Kevin and could not be more excited about the direction of our team,” Cousins said in a statement. It’s unclear if they engaged in any trade discussions, and cutting him was impossible due to the remaining money due on his contract.

Skeptics out in full force as fans react to Kirk Cousins extension (Vikings Wire)

News of Kirk Cousins agreeing to a one-year extension with the Minnesota Vikings isn't sitting well with some fans.

By agreeing to this deal, the Vikings are hitching themselves to the same wagon as former general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer. Not everyone is on board with the Minnesota Vikings offering quarterback Kirk Cousins a contract extension. Sure, Cousins being on the field gives the Vikings the chance to win football games right now, but his overpriced contract has limited the team from making other moves.

The Minnesota Vikings and Kirk Cousins have agreed to a one-year extension, the team announced Sunday.

He played under the franchise tag in 2016 and 2017, his final two seasons with Washington, and then used that leverage to enter the free-agent market in 2018. Cousins will earn $40 million in 2022 and $30 million in 2023. All of it is fully guaranteed, and Cousins will receive $50 million of the $70 million by mid-March 2023. The Vikings have ranked among the top 10 in scoring just once during Cousins' tenure (2019) and finished the 2021 season 14th in scoring and 12th in yards. "High level quarterback play is a prerequisite to building a championship team, and we are confident Kirk will continue along that path." By extending the deal into 2023, and adding two voidable years in 2024 and 2025, the team lowered his cap number to $31.25 million this season, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Vikings Agree in Principle to Contract Extension with QB Kirk Cousins (Vikings.com)

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings have entered a new era with a new general manager and new head coach. But there won't be a change at the quarterback position.

It also lengthens the Cousins era in Minnesota, which began in March 2018 with a three-year deal as he signed with the Vikings in March of 2018 as a free agent. "I am thrilled for the opportunity to play for Kevin and could not be more excited about the direction of our team," Cousins said. He has thrown for 4,000-plus yards with at least 30 touchdowns in three of his four seasons with the Vikings, and he has also been one of the league's most accurate quarterbacks over the past decade or so. Cousins, who had the 2022 season remaining on his current contract, was set to count for $45 million against the salary cap this upcoming season. Cousins, however, has played some of the best football of his career in Minnesota, as he played in a pair of Pro Bowls in a four-year span and routinely posted statistics that landed him in the top-10 of numerous rankings. While the team didn't announce the terms, the contract extension presumably lowers his 2022 cap hit.

There was also the $45 million question about whether any other team would be prepared to assume his sizable salary-cap hit for 2022. He was supposed to be the final piece for a squad that won 13 games and reached the conference championship in 2017. That's not good enough for a unit that had the talent at Minnesota's disposal. It takes all 11 to move the football on offense, to run it, to throw it, to score points in the red zone. Cousins also reportedly landed a no-trade clause in the extension. But I'm anticipating Kirk being a part of what we do."

Vikings reportedly extend Kirk Cousins, deal includes no-trade clause (The Viking Age)

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly decided to give quarterback Kirk Cousins a one-year extension that will keep him under contract until 2024.

The Vikings quarterback will now see his cap hit for next season reduced from $45 million to $31.4 million. The contract also includes two void years on the end of it to help Minnesota reduce Cousins’ cap hit for the 2022 campaign. According to NFL Media’s Tom Peliserro on Sunday, the Vikings have signed Cousins to a one-year, $35 million fully guaranteed contract extension.

The Vikings were expected to shed salary in order to clear space for free agency, but a Cousins extension was also always a possibility, even though it would commit a new regime to the 33-year-old QB. He originally signed a fully guaranteed three-year, $84M deal in 2017 free agency, then inked a two-year, $66M extension ahead of the 2020 season. New Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell has said repeatedly he's excited to work with quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2022.

If the new leaders in Minnesota can turn around that unit, look for Minnesota to make a play for a playoff spot and potentially even challenge the perennial NFC North power from Green Bay for the division. There are some questions to be answered on the interior of the line, but the pieces, for the most part, are there. Cousins’ scheduled cap hit for 2022 was set to be the largest in NFL history at $45MM. The extension reduces his 2022 cap number to $31.42MM, granting Minnesota a little over $13.5MM in cap space.
